O s vs. Royals The Royals took last night s opener of this weekend set, KC s sixth win in its last seven games against the Orioles here in Kauffman Stadium, not including the two in the 2014 ALCS... the Royals are all-time vs. the O s, including a deficit in Kansas City, but hold a advantage in The K. Date Site Score WP LP Att. 4/22 KC W, 4-2 Young Gallardo 29,546 4/23 KC 4/24 KC Balt Balt Balt QUICK STRIKE ENOUGH FOR YOUNG & PEN--The Royals plated a trio of first inning runs, each reaching safely on the first three pitches seen, giving Chris Young and the KC bullpen enough of an advantage en route to a 4-2 victory in the series opener vs. the Orioles...Alcides Escobar singled on the first pitch from Yovani Gallardo, then Mike Moustakas homered on the second, followed immediately by a Lorenzo Cain single and he scored on a Kendrys Morales double...that would be enough for Young and the pen, with C.Y. working the first 6.0 frames allowing just four hits and two runs with a walk and 10 strikeouts, his first double-digit strikeout game in eight years...luke Hochevar, Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis each contributed a scoreless frame with Davis needed just eight pitches to end the affair and earn his seventh save...moustakas continued his red hot week, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and his sixth homer, second in as many nights...the win was KC s third in its last four games and upped the Royals to an 11-5 start to the year, the top record in the A.L. MOOSE EN FUEGO--Third baseman Mike Moustakas entered last Sunday s game in Oakland with a.214 early season average, but he has flipped the script in his last five games, hitting safely in each at a.450 clip (9-for-20) with three doubles and three home runs for a slugging pct. in that span...he has upped his season average 76 points to its present.290 mark entering tonight s play...he enters tonight tied for the A.L. lead in home runs with six, a figure he didn t attain last year until June 16 in his 58th game...mike has homered 17 times since last August 20, which are the third most behind only Chris Davis and Edwin Encarnacion with 18 each...moustakas has turned into a real thorn in the backside of the Orioles, hitting.469 (15-for-32) with seven runs, four doubles, five home runs and 21 RBI in his last eight games vs. Baltimore, while slugging at a clip...moose has knocked in 12 runs in Kansas City s last two wins over the O s, highlighted by a team record nine RBI last September 12 in Oriole Park. STARTING STAFF EXCELLING--Chris Young s 6.0-inning stint last night was yet another in what s becoming a solid stretch of work by Kansas City starting pitchers, with the Royals entering tonight s action on top of the American League among starting staffs in fewest hits allowed (76), fewest runs allowed (30) and fewest earned runs surrendered (29)... entering tonight second in the loop in starters ERA with a 2.85 mark (Chicago leads at 2.69)...Kansas City s starters have limited opposing hitters to a collective.224 average, which ranks second to Chicago s.213 mark...edinson Volquez and Ian Kennedy find themselves among the ERA elite in the A.L., with Volky sixth with his 1.46 mark and Kennedy fourth at EXTENDED ROAD WORK AHEAD--Kansas City will depart on its first West Coast swing following tomorrow s homestand finale with Baltimore, making threegame stops in Anaheim and Seattle...the Royals will then return home for just a three-game series against the A.L. East leading Washington Nationals (May 2-4), then hit the road again for another weeklong journey through Cleveland (3) and New York (4)...all told, after Sunday s game with the O s, Kansas City will play 13 of its next 16 games away from Kauffman Stadium...the good news is that once that stretch ends, KC will host 13 of its next 19 contests at The K...as for the upcoming journey, the Royals look to continue the success they had over the Halos last year, taking six of seven, including a 3-0 visit to Angel Stadium in April... KC still trails the all-time series by a margin, but actually possess a advantage in Anaheim.
