Brubaker (4-4, 5.17) YESTERDAY: The Curve dropped the series opener against the Bowie Baysox, 4-3. Bowie took the lead on an RBI single by Garabez Rosa in the eighth inning against Casey Sadler. The Baysox opened a 3-0 lead through the first five innings. Steve Wilkerson hit a solo homer in the second and two more runs scored in the fifth. The Curve scored a run on a groundout by Pablo Reyes in the fifth and Kevin Newman followed with a sac fly. Jin-De Jhang tied the game with a single in the bottom of the sixth. J.T. Brubaker allowed three runs over six innings with five strikeouts. Sadler allowed one run over two innings and picked up his first loss. Sean Keselica worked a scoreless ninth. TODAY: The Curve face the Bowie Baysox, Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, in the second of a four-game series at PNG Field. The Curve won three of four games in Akron prior to the All-Star Break, with a loss on Sunday snapping a four-game winning streak. The Curve have won six of their last nine overall, but have lost two straight. The Baysox won two of three in their last series before the break at home against Richmond and have won seven of eight overall games. This series is the first trip to PNG Field for the Baysox this year. Bowie took two of three games against from June 2-4 and swept four games from June FOR ALTOONA: Right-hander Austin Coley makes his 15th start for the Curve and his 20th overall appearance. Last time out, he allowed four earned runs over five innings on Saturday in a win at Akron. Over his last five starts since June 16, Coley is 2-0 with a 2.54 (8 ER/28.1 IP). He is ranked sixth among Eastern League pitchers with a 3.12 ERA, and fifth with a 1.19 WHIP. From May 4-June 4, Coley posted a 1.85 ERA (7 ER/34 IP) in four starts and four relief outings. He pitched with the A-Adv. Bradenton Marauders last season and went with a 4.65 ERA last year. In 2015, Coley led the South Atlantic League and the Pirates organization with 16 wins while pitching for Single-A West Virginia. Coley was drafted by the Pirates in the eighth round of the 2014 draft out of Belmont. For more on Coley, see page two. FOR BOWIE: Lefty John Means makes his 17th start and 18th overall appearance for the Baysox. He has picked up a win in four consecutive starts dating back to June 18, posting a 1.82 ERA (5 ER/24.2 IP) in that span. Means has not allowed a run in his last two starts against Akron and Hartford, covering 14 IP. Tonight marks his first start against the Curve this year. In 2016, Means went 0-2 with an 8.49 ERA (11 ER/11.2 IP) in three starts against. BESTED BY BOWIE: The Curve have lost seven of their eight games against Bowie this year. The offense has combined to hit.233 (63/270) against Bowie, their worst average against any E.L. team this season. The pitching staff has a 5.22 ERA (40 ER/69.0 IP) against the Baysox, also the worst against an league opponent. Bowie is hitting.315 (86/273) against with nine homers in eight games, the highest average the Curve have allowed to an opponent this year and the highest average for the Baysox against any opponent faced in more than three games. The Baysox have a better ERA ( ER/74.0 IP) against than any other E.L. opponent, which is the lowest ERA posted by any Curve opponent in head-to-head match-ups this season. Overall this season, the Curve have had 31 games decided by one run, the third-most in the league, going The Curve have played ten games overall this season that were tied heading into the ninth inning, the second-most in the E.L., and have won five of those. HELLO, NEWMAN: Over his last 21 games since June 17, Kevin Newman is hitting.337 (30/89), third-best in the Pirates' system, with seven doubles, a triple, two homers and 10 RBIs. His season average has increased from.229 to.259. For the year, he has the fourth-best TPA/SO rate in the E.L. (9.35) and has the fifth-most at-bats (316). Newman has posted a.341 average (14/41) with a homer, five doubles and eight RBIs in ten July games. SUIT UP!: Since June 2, Jerrick Suiter is batting.353 (36/102), leading the Pirates' system during that stretch, with six homers, six doubles, 20 RBIs and 19 walks over 33 games. Suiter reached base in 10 straight plate appearances from July 5-7, going 9-for-9 with a homer, two doubles, a walk and five RBIs. He hit safely in nine straight at-bats and eight straight plate appearances. In his last seven games, Suiter is hitting.500 (12/24, 2 2B, 2 HR, 3 BB, 7 RBIs). EDWINNING: 2016 E.L. Lefty Sean Keselica has held opposing hitters to a.169 average when pitching out of the pen, second-best in the league, and Tate Scioneaux (.202) is ranked fifth. Miguel Rosario is first in ERA (0.89), Montana DuRapau is second (1.49), Keselica is fourth (1.84) and Scioneaux is sixth (2.01) in ERA out of the relievers in the league with at least 36 innings pitched. BATTLING THE INJURY BUG: After placing just three players on the disabled list for the entire season in 2015 and three in all of 2016, the Curve have placed nine different players on their DL this year. Currently there are seven players on the disabled list, including three of the team's top-five prospects on MLB.com (Kevin Kramer, Brandon Waddell and Connor Joe).
