Balt Balt Balt 8/31 KC 9/1 KC 9/2 KC JUNIS LEADS ROYALS TO SEASON FIRST--The Royals put their first series win in the books on Sunday with a 4-2 victory over Detroit to take three of four from the Tigers...Jakob Junis upped his season record to 4-2 with 7.0+ innings allowing a pair of runs on eight hits with a walk and careerhigh tying eight strikeouts...leading 4-0, he allowed a fourth inning homer to John Hicks, then kept the Bengals off the board until allowing an eighth inning leadoff single to Jose Iglesias, who came around to score after Jakob s departure...the quickly played 2-hour, 16-minute affair saw Kansas City plate a first inning run manufactured by Whit Merrifield, who opened the game with a double, stole third and scored on a sac fly...merrifield was in the middle of KC s three-run third as well, reaching on a two-out single, stealing both second and third, then scoring with Jorge Soler on a Mike Moustakas double...sal Perez closed out Kansas City s scoring by knocking home Moose with a single...kelvin Herrera worked a scoreless ninth to record his seventh save in eight tries...after a rugged 5-20 start to the year, the Royals have now gone 6-3 in their last nine games. COOL PAPA WHIT--On the day that he was honored by the Negro Leagues Museum with the Cool Papa Bell award, given annually to the American League stolen base leader, Whit Merrifield ignited the Kansas City offense with three stolen bases in Sunday s series-clinching win over the Tigers, his second career threesteal game (July 2, 2017 vs. Minnesota)...Merrifield, who led the A.L. with 34 thefts last year, pilfered third base twice on Sunday in both the first and third innings... he now has 14 career steals of third base (in 15 tries) to break a tie with Mike Trout while matching Elvis Andrus and Jose Ramirez for third most in the league since Merrifield debuted in Whit has picked it up of late on the base paths with six thefts in his last 11 games after swiping one bag in the first 21. SOLER BACK ON BASE--Right fielder Jorge Soler, who was kept off the base paths on Saturday for the first time in 20 games, returned to reaching base on Sunday with a pair of hits and a walk...soler has now hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games at a.370 clip (17-for-46) with five doubles, three home runs, eight runs scored, 10 driven in, seven walks, a hit by pitch with a.463 on-base pct. and OPS during his hitting streak...his 20 walks on the year not only lead the Royals, but rank tied for fifth in the league, while his.425 on-base pct. is tied for fourth...since snapping an 0-for-11 start to the year, he has batted.344 (32-for-93) while reaching safely in 24 of his last 26 games with nine doubles, four homers, 17 walks, two hit by pitches and a.455 on-base pct. and.570 slugging pct. which adds up to a OPS. DUPE REMAINS PERFECT--Our own Bill Duplissea made good on his lone replay review at home on Friday night, when James McCann was called safe on a stolen base attempt in the seventh inning...after a very quick 32-second delay, New York overturned the call on the field and upped Dupe s record to 9-for-9 on the year, making the Royals the only team to have a perfect start to their replay review season...dupe has made good on 68% of his challenges in his career (108-for- 160), which ranks among the best, including a Major League best 73% success rate over the last three seasons (61-for-84). NEXT STOP, CLEVELAND--The Royals will pay their second visit of the year to Cleveland starting Friday night to end this six-game journey...based on the forecast it will be a far cry from the first stop during the second weekend of the season when the temperature never left the 30 s during a 1-2 stop at Progressive Field...the upcoming visit features a 6:10 (KC time) affair on Friday, followed by 3:10 on Saturday and 12:10 finale on Sunday. TONIGHT S STARTING PITCHERS: LHP Danny Duffy (0-4, 5.63) vs. RHP Dylan Bundy (1-4, 3.76) Career Career Danny Duffy vs. Orioles Major League Record 0-4 (5.63 ERA) Dylan Bundy vs. Royals Major League Record 1-4 (3.76 ERA) DANNY DUFFY receives his team-leading eighth start tonight, the 138th start of his career and 166th overall outing...he s facing the Orioles for the 10th time, his eighth start...the 29-year-old left-hander signed a five-year contract in 2017 he was originally selected by KC in the third round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft. LONG BALLS COSTLY--Danny fell to 0-4 last Wednesday afternoon at Fenway Park, surrendering four home runs in a 5-4 setback to the Red Sox...he allowed three solo homers to Mookie Betts and a two-run shot to J.D. Martinez, accounting for all five runs over 6.2 innings, which also included 10 hits, one walk and six strikeouts...duff faced the minimum over the first 3.0 frames, however, after being staked to a 3-0 lead, he surrendered Betts first home run to start the fourth as well as a game-tying two-run blast by Martinez later in the inning...betts also homered in the fifth and the seventh, one batter before Duffy departed with a 5-3 deficit...the four home runs Danny allowed were a career-high and two more than he d surrendered in his previous five starts this year (he had allowed seven in his previous six starts this year)...it was also the second time in his last three outings that he s given up 10 hits, after doing that just once in 50 combined starts during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. LEFT-HANDED STORY--Since the start of 2016, Duffy has held left-handed batters to a.179 average (43-for-240), which is fourth-lowest in the Majors (min. 250 lefties faced)...in Boston, he allowed one hit a single to Rafael Devers in 10 at-bats vs. their left-handed hitters, dropping his season average to.207 (6-for-29)... he s allowed just one extra-base hit to a left-handed batter this year, a double to Detroit s Leonys Martin on April 21, which snapped a streak of 38-straight left-handed hitters faced without an extra-base hit...since returning from his oblique injury last July 4, Duffy s.131 average (11-for-84) against left-handers is third-lowest in the Major Leagues (min. 75 lefties faced), trailing only Josh Hader (.123) and Blake Snell (.130). NIGHT TIME--Danny makes just his second start of the year under the lights, his first a no-decision in a 7-4 KC loss against the White Sox on April 27, while all four of his losses in 2018 have come in the afternoon...over the past two-plus seasons, he has a 17-8 mark with a 3.81 ERA (105 ER in IP) at night, compared to a 4-9 record and a 3.95 ERA during the day. STRIKEOUTS FOR A CAUSE--For every strikeout he records this season, Duffy will donate $1,000 to Noah s Bandage Project, a local foundation that provides fun bandages to kids and raises money to fight childhood cancer from , he pledged $159,000 ($500 per strikeout), before upping the ante this season, which has already reached $34,000 through his first seven starts the foundation is named for Noah Wilson, who lost his battle with bone cancer in VS. THE O s--danny makes his eighth career start (10th regular season appearance) vs. Baltimore, entering at 2-2 with a 2.23 ERA (11 ER in 44.1 IP)...he took no-decisions in two starts against the O s last year, most recently here on July 31, when he allowed one run on seven hits over 7.0 innings, in a 2-1 KC defeat...in five outings (four starts) at Camden Yards, Duffy has a 2.66 ERA (7 ER in 23.2 IP), while holding the O s to a.227 average (20-for-88), but is 0-2. ON THE ROAD--He s dropped three of his four road starts this season, posting a 5.48 ERA (14 ER in 23.0 IP), with opponents hitting.266 (25-for-94)... his last road win was last September 23, 8-2 at Guaranteed Rate Field over the White Sox...he s with a 3.75 ERA in 87 career road outings, which includes 70 starts.
