REC: 13-20; DUCKS NEWS AND NOTES The Faithful Flock: Since their inaugural season of 2000, the Long Island Ducks have welcomed an Atlantic League record 7,274,945 fans through the gates of Bethpage Ballpark. Long Island reached the 7 million fan mark faster than any other team in league history despite having begun play in the ALPB s third year of existence (2000). Saturday s crowd of 7,038 was the Ducks seventh past-capacity crowd of the year and league-record 670th sold out crowd all-time. Cooking the Crabs: Tonight marks the 18th meeting of the season along with the 195th all-time meeting between the Ducks and Blue Crabs. The Ducks lead the alltime series 99-95, but the Blue Crabs have a edge at Regency Furniture Stadium. Long Island leads the 2017 season series 10-7, and the season series is even at four games apiece in Waldorf. The teams are in the midst of playing seven consecutive games against one another in a six day span this week. Going Streaking: After a 1-0 win on Thursday against Southern Maryland, the Long Island Ducks have won seven games in a row. The current spurt is the longest winning streak of the season for the Ducks, surpassing a pair of four-game streaks in May. In this streak, the Ducks have outscored their opponents 36-17, and have out-hit their opponents In 2016, the Ducks longest winning streak was nine games, accomplished from April 28-May 5. Just Keep Reaching: Long Island outfielder Anthony Vega failed to reach base safely on Thursday night, ending a 12-game on-base streak and a four-game hitting streak. In the 12 game burst, Vega batted.342 (13-for-38) with a double, a homer, six RBI, 12 runs and eight walks. Additionally Delta Cleary Jr. (six games) and Marc Krauss (three games) both had on-base streaks snapped Thursday. Burg s the Word: Ducks catcher Alex Burg connected for a double and scored the only run of Thursday s game. The catcher has now reached base in eight consecutive games, earning at least one hit in six straight contests. He has a.407 batting average (11-for-27), with three doubles, one homer, four RBI and six runs scored in that span. Dating back to July 29, Burg has reached base safely in 11 of his past 12 games, earning at least one hit in nine of them. He s Going The Distance: With a complete game shutout thrown last night, righthanded pitcher Matt Larkins now leads the team with two complete games and two shutouts thrown this season. The Idaho resident also notched a complete game on July 5 against the Lancaster Barnstormers, striking out 10 in a one-hitter. As a team, the Ducks have recorded four complete games this year, with Tim Melville and Alfredo Simon recording the other two. Simon and Larkins have both thrown complete games during the current winning streak, though Simon s was a seven-inning complete game in game one of Tuesday s doubleheader. The victory was Long Island s seventh consecutive win, the club s longest winning streak of the season. Pitching ruled the day as Matt Larkins of the Ducks and Daryl Thompson of the Blue Crabs dominated hitters throughout the night. After a leadoff single in the first by Quintin Berry, Thompson retired 15 Ducks in a row before Giovanny Alfonzo singled in the sixth. In one stretch of his own, Larkins retired 11 straight Blue Crabs hitters. Long Island broke through in the eighth against reliever Zack Thornton, who allowed a leadoff double to Alex Burg. Two batters later, the Ducks catcher scored when Jose Lozada fielded an Alfonzo groundball and threw wildly to first for an error. Larkins (6-6) finished the complete game shutout by working around a leadoff single in the ninth. The right-hander allowed four hits and walked two while striking out four in a dominant performance. This was the second shutout thrown by Larkins this season, with the other coming on July 5 at Bethpage Ballpark against the Lancaster Barnstormers. Thompson did not factor into the decision despite throwing seven shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out nine. Thornton (2-2) got the loss, allowing the unearned run in his lone stanza of work. Berry, Burg and Alfonzo had the only three hits of the game for the Ducks SEASON AT A GLANCE 2017 DUCKS VS. The left-hander threw six shutout innings, allowing just one hit while walking two in a 2-1 Long Island victory. Perez threw only 62 pitches in the outing, and earned his first win and quality start since July 15 against Somerset. THE GOLDEN RATIO: With 73 strikeouts and just 23 walks allowed this season, Rafael Perez sports an excellent 3.17 strikeout-to-walk ratio. This beats his career average of 2.64 K:BB, and is the best mark he has posted since the 2013 season which he split between Rochester (AAA, MIN) and Portland (AA, BOS). UNLUCKY MONTH SEVEN: With his strong start against Bridgeport, Perez seems to be moving on from a nightmarish July, in which he went 1-3 with a 7.40 ERA (17 ER/20.2 IP). Opponents hit.344 against Perez in the month, and eight of the 31 hits against him went for extra bases (5 2B, 3 HR). Removing his July stats from his season numbers, Perez would be 6-4 with a 3.53 ERA (29 ER/74.0 IP). In seven starts from June 28-August 1, Perez went 1-4 with a 6.97 ERA (24 ER/31.0 IP). CLEVELAND ROCKS: Perez spent seven seasons as a member of the Cleveland Indians, mostly serving as a left-handed setup man. In 338 career MLB relief appearances, Perez compiled a 3.64 ERA and registered three saves. He made a name for himself by generating groundballs at a 54.5% rate throughout his career, well above the MLB average of around 44%. PITCHER TIDBITS Perez was originally signed by the Cleveland Indians as a non-drafted free agent on January 25, Made his MLB Debut on April 20, 2006, pitching a perfect inning of relief at Camden Yards against the Baltimore Orioles, striking out Brian Roberts and Melvin Mora. After posting a 1.78 ERA in 44 appearances during the 2007 season, ESPN analyst Peter Gammons called Perez, Arguably the best left-handed reliever on the planet. Tied for second in the American league in appearances in 2011 (71), and finished in the top 10 in 2010 (T-10th, 70) and 2008 (T-6th, 73).
