The Cubs endured a 2-1, 11-inning loss last night to the Brewers, their fourth game decided by two runs or less to start the season the Cubs have seen each of their first four games decided by two runs or less for only the second time in the last 30 years, the first time since 2001, when they started off with fourstraight one-run games (also started 2-2). After tomorrow s series finale in Milwaukee, the Cubs head home to Wrigley Field for their home opener and World Series banner raising ceremony on Monday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the start of a 10-day, nine-game homestand through April 19. WHAT AN ERA: Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks led the majors with a 2.13 ERA last year, the first Cub to lead the big leagues since Bill Lee with a 2.66 ERA 78 years earlier in Hendricks last season also led the majors with a.581 opponents OPS and ranked second with a 0.98 WHIP Hendricks finished third in Cy Young voting behind Max Scherzer and teammate Jon Lester. Hendricks enter the 2017 campaign with a 2.92 career ERA, the third-lowest mark among active pitchers with at least 75 career starts, trailing only Clayton Kershaw (2.36 ERA) and Jacob DeGrom (2.71 ERA). Hendricks is 3-1 with a 1.82 ERA (6 ER/29.2 IP) in five career starts against the Brewers here at Miller Park. AGAINST THE BREW CREW: Chicago won 22 of 26 against Milwaukee from July 30, 2015 through September 5 of last season, hitting.245 with 26 homers and 119 runs scored in those 26 contests (4.6 runs per game) while posting a 2.33 ERA (61 ER/236.0 IP) however, the Cubs have dropped six of their final seven against Milwaukee since then, averaging 2.9 runs per game with a.231 average and a 4.69 ERA (33 ER/63.1 IP). Wade Davis has converted his first two save opportunities this season, and has converted his last eight dating to September of last season with the Royals. AGE IS JUST A NUMBER: New Cubs reliever Koji Uehara celebrated his 42nd birthday on Monday and on Tuesday night became just the fourth hurler since 1913 to pitch for the Cubs, age 42 or older. Uehara joins Hoyt Wilhem, who pitched three games for Chicago in 1970 at the ripe age of 48; Dutch Leonard, who pitched his age seasons with Chicago from ; and Charlie Root, who at 42 years old toed the rubber for the Cubs in On the other end of the spectrum, the ages of the Cubs starting position players from Tuesday night in St. Louis, save for the pitcher: C Contreras (24), 1B Rizzo (27), 2B Baez (24), SS Russell (23), 3B Bryant (25), LF Schwarber (24), CF Almora Jr. (22) and RF Heyward (27). Prior to 2015, the Cubs hit the pitcher in a spot other than ninth in the batting order just once in 15,848 games from that happened September 8, 2012 at Pittsburgh in a 4-3 Cubs victory Jeff Samardzija, making his final start of the season, hit eighth in the lineup and earned the complete game win while going 0-for-3 at the dish. Cubs pitchers have responded to the eighth position in the order positively thus far, as the starting pitchers are 3-for-8 (.375) last year, Cubs pitchers led the majors with 54 hits and were third with 26 RBI. JOE MADDON AT THE HELM: Joe Maddon begins his third season as manager of the Cubs after last season leading Chicago to its first World Series title in 108 years in his first campaign with the Cubs, he was named the 2015 N.L. Manager of the Year by the BBWAA he was named the 54th manager in Cubs history, November 3, 2014, and the 2017 campaign marks his 43rd season in pro baseball, his 24th at the major league level and 12th as a major league manager. Maddon is a three-time BBWAA Manager of the Year Award winner, having earned the honor in 2008 and 2011 with Tampa Bay and in 2015 with Chicago he is one of six managers to win the award in both leagues, joining Tony LaRussa, Bobby Cox, Jim Leyland, Lou Piniella and Bob Melvin. NEW FACES IN 2017: The Cubs featured four new players on the Opening Day 25-man active roster since the conclusion of the 2016 campaign: pitchers Brett Anderson (free agent), Wade Davis (trade with Kansas City) and Koji Uehara (free agent); and outfielder Jon Jay (free agent).
