Columbia, SC QUICK HITS GAMECOCKS PREDICTED TO FINISH THIRD IN THE SEC EASTERN DIVISION South Carolina was selected to finish in third place in the Eastern Division in the 2011 SEC Preseason Coaches Poll that was released on Tuesday, Feb. 15. Carolina has finished in the upper half of the SEC Eastern Division 14 of 19 seasons since joining the league including 11 of 14 years under head coach Ray Tanner. The 2011 season begins on Friday, February 18 as the Gamecocks host a three-game series with Santa Clara at Carolina Stadium. Tickets are still available for all three games this weekend. Florida is the choice to win the 2011 SEC championship with the additional 11 SEC head coaches voting for the Gators. LSU is the choice to win the West with eight first place votes. In addition to picking a preseason champion, the head coaches voted a predicted order of finish in the SEC Eastern and Western Divisions. Points were compiled on a basis for each division. Friday s opener is at Carolina Stadium with first pitch set for 7 p.m. Game two of the series is the Reedy River Rivalry Game from Fluor Field with first pitch at 4:15 p.m. WMYA My40 will air the game in the Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina, and the Fox affiliates in Columbia (WACH), Charleston (WTAT) and Myrtle Beach (WFXB) will also broadcast the game to their respective markets. The game will also be able to be viewed online at ESPN3.com. Sunday s series finale is at Clemson with the game set for 2 p.m. at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on CSS. All three games are also available on the Gamecock Radio Network. Carolina moved up in all three rankings released on Monday afternoon. The Gamecocks are ranked No. 4 in both the Baseball America Top 25 and USA Today/ESPN coaches poll. South Carolina also sits at No. 6 in Collegiate Baseball s Top 30. Clemson enters the weekend ranked No. 4 in Collegiate Baseball s Top 30, No. 7 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll and No. 12 by Baseball America. CAROLINA-CLEMSON Under head coach Ray Tanner, the Gamecocks are against the Tigers including 12 victories in the last 17 contests between the two schools. South Carolina comes into the contest having won two consecutive games over the Tigers in the 2010 College World Series. Carolina defeated Clemson 5-1 and 4-3 to advance to the national championship series. PRICE & BRADLEY AWARDS Following the conclusion of Sunday afternoon s contest, the Tom Price Award and Bob Bradley Award will be presented to the respective MVP s from South Carolina and Clemson for the series. Both Bradley and Price served as Baseball SIDs at their respective schools for decades and were important in the promotion of collegiate baseball across the state and in the country. Bradley passed away in 2000, while Price passed away on February 1, GAMECOCKS CONTINUES WINNING WAYS South Carolina batted around to score nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and junior left-hander Steven Neff struck out a career-high seven batters in four innings of work to earn his first win of the year as South Carolina defeated Furman 14-1 on Tuesday night in non-conference action at Carolina Stadium. Neff, in his first start of the season in a predetermined split, was effective in four scoreless innings as he limited Furman to just two hits and one walk allowed. He is now 1-0 on the year. The Gamecocks have now won 13 straight games dating back to last year when the team won six straight to win the national title in Omaha. WALKER DRIVES THEM IN Sophomore first baseman Christian Walker continues to shine with the bat as he went 3-for-4 with a homer, three runs scored and four RBI in the 14-1 win over Furman. In addition to his success vs. Furman, Walker tied for the best weekend at the plate for the Gamecocks vs. Southern Illinois hitting.545 (6-for-11) with three doubles, four runs scored and a pair of RBI. Walker is hitting.538 (14-for-26) on the year with two homers and 10 RBI. His on-base percentage is.625. He has six multi-hit games and has a 12-game hitting streak that dates back to last year as well. Walker s on-base percentage is second best in the SEC, batting average is third best and slugging percentage is fourth best (.826). JUNIOR Junior outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and three runs scored in the 14-1 win over Furman. He also homered and drove in two runs in Sunday s 9-4 victory over Southern Illinois. Bradley is hitting.423 (11-for-26) for the season with a pair of homers and eight RBI on the year. Bradley also had three doubles and has scored nine runs. He has a.818 slugging percentage that ties him for fifth best in the league. His on-base percentage is.519 for the season. WILLIAMS HAS SOLID DEBUT Junior outfielder Jake Williams started in left field in Saturday s 4-0 win and was the starting designated hitter in Sunday s 9-4 win as well. Williams drove in two runs in Saturday s victory and was 2-for-4 with a triple in Sunday s victory. He made his third consecutive start vs. Furman and had a season-high three hits and three RBI in the 14-1 victory. MOONEY DELIVERS Junior shortstop Peter Mooney was stellar at the plate as he tied Walker for the best average last weekend also batting.545 (6-for-11) vs. the Salukis. He also had three doubles and a triple in the series including a 3-for-3 day at the plate in Sunday s 9-4 win vs. SIU. Mooney is hitting.286 (8-for-28) for the season with a.375 on-base percentage. MORALES FINDS A WAY Senior third baseman Adrian Morales hit.400 (4-for-10) vs. Southern Illinois with a homer and a team-high six RBI in the series. Morales was 3-for-4 and tied a career-high with three RBI, doubled and homered in Sunday s 9-4 win over Southern Illinois. Morales is hitting.381 (8-for-21) for the season and has a.500 on-base percentage. He has nine RBI for the season. 4

5 26 NCAA Appearances MATTHEWS SCORES Junior outfielder Adam Matthews has hit safely in six of seven games this year for the Gamecocks. He was 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the 4-0 win over Southern Illinois. Matthews also scored two runs in Sunday s 9-4 win. He is hitting.308 (8-for-26) on the year with 10 runs scored. He has also stolen three bases this year. THE VERSATILE MR. BEARY Senior Robert Beary hit a three-run homer in the 10-6 win over Southern Illinois. His three RBI was a careerhigh as well. He has made starts at catcher and designated hitter with action as well in the outfield. THOMAS LEADS THE WAY Senior catcher Brady Thomas was key in the 10-6 win over Southern Illinois with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI. He had two doubles in the Gamecocks victory. WEBB HAS CAREER DAY Sophomore left-hander Tyler Webb hurled a career-high 7.1 innings and tied a career-high with seven strikeouts and teamed with relievers Bryan Harper and John Taylor to hurl a five-hit shutout as South Carolina defeated Southern Illinois 4-0 in game two of a weekend series. Webb was effective throughout the game allowing just four hits in his longest start of his career. His seven strikeouts tie the career-high he set March 14, 2010 vs. Brown. He is now 2-0 on the year. He has not allowed an earned run in a team-high 13.1 innings pitched and has 11 strikeouts to just three walks. Opponents are hitting just.159 against him. ROTH PICKS UP ANOTHER WIN Junior left-hander Michael Roth also improved to 2-0 after a stellar start in Friday s 10-6 victory. Roth struck out a career-high nine batters in 6.2 innings of work and allowed just two runs, one earned, on four hits. He has 15 strikeouts in 12.1 innings with opponents batting just.174 against him and a 2.19 ERA. Roth s 15 strikeouts are sixth best in the SEC. TAYLOR - A RELIEF Senior reliever John Taylor was key out of the bullpen in the Southern Illinois series with appearances in all three games. Taylor allowed just one hit in four innings of work with eight strikeouts. He went a career-high 2.2 innings and had a career-high five strikeouts to pick up his first win of the year in Sunday s 9-4 win. THE PRICE IS RIGHT Sophomore right-hander Matt Price picked up his second save of the season in the 10-6 win over Southern Illinois. Price came into Friday s game and retired both batters he faced to pick up a save. He now has two saves. A CLOSER LOOK AT THE NUMBERS Carolina hit.320 (33-for-103) vs. Southern Illinois and fielded.981 with just two errors. Carolina s pitching staff compiled a team ERA of.300 and had 34 strikeouts to just eight walks in 27.0 innings. SIU batted just.208 in the series. For the season, South Carolina is hitting.335 (76-for-227), fourth best in the league. The Gamecocks own a 2.00 ERA, fifth best in the league as well as a.981 fielding percentage, fifth best in the SEC as well. OFF TO A GOOD START South Carolina opened the 2011 season with a sweep of Santa Clara at Carolina Stadium. The Gamecocks defeated the Broncos 12-5, 2-1 and 6-0 to go to 3-0 on the year. The Gamecocks were strong offensively and defensively as well as on the mound in the three-game sweep of Santa Clara. Carolina hit.352 (31-for-88) as a team with Jackie Bradley Jr. leading the way with a.583 average (7-for-12) with three doubles. Christian Walker was 6-for-12 (.500) with a team-high six RBI. Adrian Morales went 3-for-7 with three runs scored and Scott Wingo and Adam Matthews each were 4-for-10 at the plate. In addition the Gamecocks had 15 walks and five hit by pitches to just 11 strikeouts in three games. South Carolina s pitching staff finished the weekend with a 1.67 team ERA and had 25 strikeouts to just eight walks. Santa Clara hit just.198 for the series and scored only six runs against the Gamecocks. PACK THE HOUSE There were great crowds at Carolina Stadium last weekend with two standing room only sellouts on Friday and Saturday (8,242). The Gamecocks finished the weekend with a total attendance of 23,800 with an average of 7,933. FOUR-HIT SHUTOUT The 6-0 win over Santa Clara featured four Gamecock pitchers hurling a four-hit shutout. Making his first appearance since May 22, 2009, Gamecock left-hander Adam Westmoreland was effective in his start as he hurled 5.2 scoreless innings with just one walk and five strikeouts to lead the way for the Gamecock pitchers. Gamecock reliever Jose Mata would hurl 0.2 scoreless innings to pick up the win. He is now 1-0 for the year. Junior left-hander Logan Munson retired both batters he faced and freshman right-hander Forrest Koumas closed the game out with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts to seal the shutout win for Carolina. CAROLINA BASEBALL CAROLINA VS. All three players earned the honor after a vote by their teammates. BRADLEY & PRICE EARN PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA ACCOLADES South Carolina junior outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. and sophomore right-handed pitcher Matt Price are consensus Preseason All-America selections having been recognized by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA. Bradley was the 2010 College World Series Most Outstanding Player and the Gamecocks leading hitter this past season with a.368 batting average (89-for-242) with 13 HR and 60 RBI. He also had a.473 on-base percentage and a.587 slugging percentage for the season. Price went 5-1 out of the bullpen last year with a 2.26 ERA as well as 10 saves. He struck out 83 batters in 55.2 innings, finishing with an average of strikeouts per nine innings, a school record at Carolina. In addition, he has also been named to the initial watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award. Nominations for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award were made by baseball sports information/media relations contacts. At the conclusion of the regular season, the Division I national saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as finalists Wednesday, June 1, prior to start of NCAA regional tournament competition. The NCBWA s All-America Committee then will select the winner, with this year s recipient to be announced in Omaha on the opening day of the College World Series on June 18. ASSOCIATE HEAD BASEBALL COACH CHAD HOLBROOK NAMED NO. 10 RECRUITER IN COLLEGE SPORTS ESPNU & ESPN The Magazine has named South Carolina associate head baseball coach Chad Holbrook the No. 10 recruiter in all of college sports. The list was put together in conjunction with three dozen experts who were asked the question: Who are the top 20 recruiters in college sports? Holbrook is the only baseball coach to make the list. Holbrook is entering his third season as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for the baseball program. Holbrook, serves as hitting instructor, oversees the Gamecock offense, including base running and the short game and is the third base coach. He also works with the outfielders. Holbrook came to the Gamecock program in July of 2008 after serving 15 seasons as a member of the University of North Carolina coaching staff. 6

The Gamecocks return a solid corps of veterans that figured in last year s championship. Carolina sits at No. 7 in the Baseball America s Preseason Top 25, at No. 8 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll and No. 14 in Collegiate Baseball s Preseason Top 40. One of the reasons that we had an outstanding year last season and got to the postseason and were able to position ourselves to win a national championship is because of the approach and the mentality of the guys that go between the lines, said head coach Ray Tanner. There is still a veteran group here. Part of the reason you re successful is perspective, you can handle some adversity but you can also handle success. That is what we did extremely well in 2010 and guys that were in the middle of that, they understand that very well. We ll have a good team again. It s just too hard to predict how the season will end up, but we have a good team. Familiar faces and well-known names that made last year s run are back, both in the field and on the mound. As Tanner sizes up his 2011 team, he is excited with the potential of the squad but at the same time is cautiously optimistic and aware of the preseason assessment of this year s team. The major questions are, who on our pitching staff is ready to assume the top two spots? With the departure of (Blake) Cooper and (Sam) Dyson and also Jay Brown, who is going to assume their innings? Those seem to be the major questions going in, but we do have a lot of experience and depth on our pitching staff. 32 2011 South Carolina Baseball 1 Ray TANNER Head Coach 15th Season at South Carolina 24th Season Overall Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America s National Coach of the Year, Ray Tanner is in his 15th year as head coach at the University of South Carolina. He continues to lead the Gamecock baseball program to unprecedented heights with his commitment to excellence. Over the last decade, Tanner has established one of the premier programs in all of college baseball with milestones and accomplishments piling up each season. Atop the list is the 2010 national championship, as the Gamecocks became the first team ever to win six consecutive games in Omaha on the way to a national title, the first men s national championship at the University of South Carolina. This past season s trip was the fourth to the College World Series for Coach Tanner along with three consecutive trips from Under Tanner s leadership, South Carolina owns the longest current streak of NCAA Regional appearances among the 12 SEC schools with 11 straight trips to the tournament dating back to the 2000 season. In that span, Carolina has eight NCAA Super Regional appearances (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010). South Carolina is one of only six schools in the nation to make at least eight NCAA Super Regionals in the last 11 years and one of only eight schools in the country to have reached the NCAA Regionals every season from 2000 to the present. The program s 11-year total record of is the fourth highest win total among NCAA Division I schools. South Carolina has 11 consecutive seasons of 40 or more wins. The Gamecocks have also collected championships in the Southeastern Conference with regular season titles in 2000 and 2002 along with a SEC Tournament crown in Tanner s last 11 teams have featured 20 All-America performers including right-handed pitcher Blake Cooper this past season. The 2010 Gamecocks finished with a record, won a regional and super regional before heading to Omaha to win the school s first baseball national championship. The 2010 team featured All-America and All-SEC pitcher Blake Cooper along with Freshman All-America first baseman Christian Walker and Freshman All-America relief pitcher Matt Price. Price also earned second-team All-SEC honors with outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr., who was named College World Series Most Outstanding Player. Walker, Price and Evan Marzilli received SEC All-Freshman team honors as well. The Gamecocks finished SEC season play with an impressive 21-9 record also. Six players would go on to sign professional contracts after the season. The upcoming 2011 season will be Tanner s 24th year as a collegiate head coach. At South Carolina, Tanner has a.692 winning percentage - the second highest in Southeastern Conference history. This past season, Tanner also reached a career milestone, recording his 1,000th career victory as he became the fourth fastest active coach to reach that total. Tanner has also gained valuable experience at an international level in his association with USA Baseball. He has served five stints with Red, White & Blue including his latest in 2003 as head coach for the USA National Baseball Team. At the helm of some of the top freshmen and sophomores in the country, Tanner s club finished with a 27-2 record, the best record for a U.S. National Team (.931 winning percentage) and won a silver medal at the 2003 Pan American Games. He was named the U.S. National Coach of the Year for his work that season. Prior to his head coaching stint, Tanner served as an auxiliary coach for the 2000 Olympic Team under Tommy Lasorda that won a gold medal at the XXVII Olympiad in Sydney, Australia. He was also an assistant with the USA teams under former LSU coach Skip Bertman that culminated in a bronze medal win at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Ga. Tanner also served alongside current Mississippi State coach Ron Polk on Bertman s staff. Tanner s first stint with USA Baseball came as an assistant coach to the national team in the summer of Tanner was named the South Carolina head coach June 14, 1996 after nine successful seasons at North Carolina State. The 1997 Gamecocks compiled a record in Tanner s initial season and qualified for the Southeastern Conference post-season tournament. The 1997 team produced a first-team All-America player in designated hitter Ryan Bordenick. Bordenick and pitcher Brett Jodie were named to the All-SEC team and shortstop Adam Everett was chosen to play with the U.S. National Team. Bordenick and catcher Rob Streicher were named All-South. The 1998 team was ranked among the top 20 in the nation, compiled a record and earned a bid to the NCAA playoffs with Tanner earning SEC Coach of the Year. Pitcher Kip Bouknight, outfielder Mike Curry and shortstop Adam Everett were named first-team All-SEC. Bouknight, Everett, Curry and Bordenick picked up All- America recognition and pitcher Peter Bauer was named Freshman All-America. The 1999 team won South Carolina s first Southeastern Conference Eastern Division championship and finished with a record. It produced a first-team All- SEC designated hitter Tim Angiolini with shortstop Brian Roberts making the second team. Roberts led the NCAA in stolen bases with a school record 67 and also earned All-America recognition. Four players from the 1999 squad signed professional contracts. Tanner s 2000 South Carolina team won the Southeastern Conference championship, a regional championship, advanced to a super regional and finished with a record. The 2000 team was ranked first in the final Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) compiled by the NCAA and among the Top 10 in the three national final polls. Baseball America ranked the Gamecocks fourth, Baseball Weekly eighth and Collegiate Baseball ninth. In addition, Tanner was named National Coach of the Year as well as SEC Coach of the Year for a second time. Pitcher Kip Bouknight, 2000 consensus All-America, won the Golden Spikes Award for the nation s top amateur baseball player and finished the year with a 17-1 record. Bouknight and pitcher Scott Barber were first-team selections on the 2000 All-SEC squad and pitcher Peter Bauer, outfielder Nate Janowicz and shortstop Drew Meyer were All-SEC second-team. 32

33 26 NCAA Appearances His 2001 Gamecocks finished with a record, won a regional and advanced to a super regional finishing in the top 15 in the national final polls. Carolina was 12th in the Baseball America poll, 13th in Baseball Weekly and 15th by Collegiate Baseball. The 2001 Gamecocks battled through the loser s bracket to win a second straight regional championship but lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to Stanford in the third and deciding super regional game at Palo Alto, Calif. Tanner s 2001 squad produced two All-America players in pitcher Lee Gronkiewicz, the nation s leader in saves, and catcher Tim Whittaker, who was also a semi-finalist for the Johnny Bench Award. Outfielder Garris Gonce, Gronkiewicz and outfielder Marcus McBeth were All- SEC. In 2002, Tanner and his Gamecocks made it to Omaha and stayed 12 days to finish as National Runner-up. It was the first trip for Tanner and culminated in a national championship showdown between South Carolina and Texas. The Gamecocks won their second SEC championship in three years and Tanner was named 2002 America Baseball Coaches Association South Region Coach of the Year and South Carolina was ranked as the number two team in the nation in all of the final polls. The final 2002 record was 57-18, topping the school record of 56 wins set two years earlier. The 2002 team won four games in the SEC Tournament after winning the official conference title with a 21-8 record in conference games. The Gamecocks then defeated Virginia Commonwealth and North Carolina twice to advance to the super regional for the third year in a row. The Gamecocks won two of three from defending national champion Miami (Fla.) to advance to the College World Series in Omaha. It took a five run ninth inning rally to defeat the Hurricanes in the deciding game. After being shut out 11-0 by Georgia Tech to open the 2002 World Series, Tanner s team fought back. Carolina defeated home state favorite Nebraska 10-8, Georgia Tech, 9-5, and Palmetto State archrival Clemson twice, 12-5 and 10-2, before losing the title game to Texas It was South Carolina s third second place finish in Omaha. The Gamecocks were also runners-up in 1975 under coach Bobby Richardson and in 1977 under coach June Raines. Three of Tanner s players; first baseman Yaron Peters, pitcher Blake Taylor and shortstop Drew Meyer earned All-American honors. Peters was the SEC Player of the Year, and Taylor led the nation in saves with 21. Meyer was a first round pick, the 10th overall choice in 2002 and the third consecutive Gamecock shortstop to be drafted in the first round. South Carolina returned to the College World Series in 2003 and notched one win, an slugfest over fellow SEC member LSU wrapped around a pair of losses to CWS runner-up Stanford. The final record in 2003 was and in the final national polls the Gamecocks were ranked 6th by Collegiate Baseball, seventh by Baseball Weekly and 10th by Baseball America. To get to Omaha a second straight time South Carolina won its fourth SEC Eastern Division championship, a fourth consecutive NCAA regional championship and a second consecutive super regional. The 2003 Gamecocks swept the Atlanta regional tournament hosted by Georgia Tech with a win over East Carolina and two over Stetson and then swept two super regional games against North Carolina at Sarge Frye Field. Two of Tanner s 2003 players, pitcher David Marchbanks and third baseman Brian Buscher, earned All- America recognition. Marchbanks was also SEC Pitcher of the Year and he, Buscher and Landon Powell were named All-SEC. Seven 2003 Gamecocks were drafted and three others signed as free agents. South Carolina made its third straight trip to Omaha in 2004 when the Gamecocks finished with a record and in the process set or tied 20 school records. Four of Tanner s players earned All-American honors in 2004, catcher Landon Powell and pitchers Chad Blackwell, Matt Campbell and Aaron Rawl. Powell and Blackwell also earned All-SEC honors along with Brendan Winn. Six Gamecocks were drafted and signed professional baseball contracts in the 2004 season including Powell and Campbell, who were selected in the first round of the MLB draft, the first time in history that two USC players were taken in the first round. Carolina finished the year ranked third in the country in all three national polls. USC had another successful season in 2005 that saw the Gamecocks earn a spot in the NCAA Atlanta Regional. 34 2011 South Carolina Baseball Tolleson joined Pearce on the All-SEC team. Pearce, Davy Gregg, Aaron Rawl and Zac McCamie all signed professional baseball contracts at the end of the season. Despite a young team, Tanner molded together a group that saw four players earn All-SEC honors including first-team outfielder Michael Campbell and second-team honorees Robbie Grinestaff (designated hitter), Reese Havens (shortstop) and Wynn Pelzer (relief pitcher). In addition to freshman Reese Havens earning All-SEC accolades, first baseman Justin Smoak, outfielder Andrew Crisp and starting pitcher Mike Cisco were named to the SEC All-Freshman team. The seven Gamecocks honored were the most players from an individual school to be recognized by the conference coaches in Smoak and Crisp also received national recognition with freshman All-America honors. Carolina finshed 2006 ranked 12th by Collegiate Baseball as well as 13th by Baseball America and 15th in the Sports Weekly/ABCA coaches poll. South Carolina recorded its eight consecutive 40-plus win season in 2007 and achieved a ranking as high as No. 1 in the nation during the year. Carolina earned a trip to the postseason and won the NCAA Columbia (S.C.) Regional before falling one win shy of a trip to Omaha and the College World Series by winning one game in the NCAA Super Regional in Chapel Hill. The 2007 team featured two All-America players in first baseman Justin Smoak and designated hitter Phil Disher. Disher would also earn first-team All-SEC honors along with second baseman Travis Jones. Smoak picked up a second-team All-SEC selection along with third baseman James Darnell. Baseball America and the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll ranked South Carolina at No. 10 at the end of the season with the Gamecocks also coming in at No. 11 in Collegiate Baseball s final rankings. South Carolina recorded its ninth consecutive 40-plus win season in 2008 and earned a trip to the postseason and the NCAA Raleigh Regional, where the Gamecocks finished in second place. The 2008 squad featured Smoak and Havens, who along with All-America honors, were selected in the first round of the MLB Draft. Smoak was the 11th overall pick to the Texas Rangers with Havens drafted 22nd overall to the New York Mets. The Gamecocks finished with seven players drafted. Smoak and Havens also earned All-SEC accolades along with third baseman James Darnell and designated hitter Phil Disher. Smoak was a first-team choice with Darnell, Disher and Havens named to the second-team. Tanner and South Carolina returned to the Top 25 in 2009 with a squad that finished the year with a mark in the SEC for second place in the Eastern Division. The Gamecocks finished in second place in the NCAA Greenville (N.C.) Regional. Having to replace several top players from the year before, the Gamecocks showcased new talent that included Jackie Bradley Jr., a consensus Freshman All- America selection, as well as second-team All-SEC first baseman Nick Ebert, who was among the nation s leaders in home runs with 23. Carolina also had several players drafted including sixth round selection Justin Dalles to the Baltimore Orioles and 13th round pick DeAngelo Mack to the New York Yankees. Left-handed pitcher Alex Farotto also was drafted by the Chicago White Sox and signed a professional contract. Mack, Dalles, Ebert and junior shortstop Bobby Haney earned All-SEC accolades with Bradley and left-handed pitcher Nolan Belcher named to the SEC All-Freshman team. Before arriving to Columbia as head coach of the Gamecocks, Tanner led his alma mater NC State to seven appearances in the NCAA postseason tournament and ranked second for most wins in school history. He was the 1990 Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year and in 1993 was named Atlantic Region Coach of the Year when his team won 49 games. While he was head coach a NC State for nine seasons, Tanner was affiliated with the Wolfpack baseball program for more than 20 years. He came to the Raleigh campus in the fall of 1976 as a player following an outstanding career at South Johnston High School in Four Oaks, N.C. A four-year starter at shortstop and third base, he earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors his senior season and still ranks among the Wolfpack s all-time leaders in several categories. Following his playing career, Tanner served as an assistant for NC State coach Sam Esposito, overseeing recruiting efforts and coaching third base. When Esposito retired, Tanner moved up at the age of 28, becoming one of the youngest head baseball coaches in the nation. During his tenure as an assistant, the Wolfpack reached the NCAA Tournament twice. He had additional duties as assistant to the athletics director and as assistant athletics director in charge of game operations. Tanner has a Bachelor of Science degree in recreational administration from NC State (1980) and Master s of public affairs, public administration (1983). Born Donald Ray Tanner, Jr., March 25, 1958 in Smithfield, N.C., Tanner grew up in Benson, N.C. He is married to the former Karen Donald, a native of Charleston, S.C. A University of South Carolina graduate, she was formerly head women s athletic trainer at NC State. During the summer of 1997 she served as trainer for Charlotte in the Women s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She is the former director of athletics and director of sports medicine at Columbia College. They have two daughters, Bridgette Grace ( Gracie ) and Margaret Pearl ( Maggie ) and one son, Joseph Luke ( Luke ).
