1 MEDIA INFORMATION Wilmington Blue Rocks (27-20) Carolina League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals at Carolina Mudcats (20-24) Carolina League Affiliate of the Atlanta Braves Game No. 48 Road Game No. 20 Five County Stadium Saturday, May 30, :00 p.m. BLUE ROCKS BREAKDOWN HOME: 19-9 AWAY: 8-11 STREAK: L2 LAST 5: 3-2 LAST 10: 7-3 FRUSTRATION AT THE PFITZ: - Eric Skoglund probably deserved a better fate on Friday night. The Wilmington starter needed just 66 pitches to get through the first seven frames, allowing only a single score in the process. Unfortunately for the Blue Rocks, Skoglund allowed three hits and two runs in the eighth, as Potomac took a 3-1 win. The setback cost Wilmington its shot at a series triumph, as the clubs split their three-day four-game set. It also coupled with Frederick s win over Lynchburg to cut the Rocks lead in the Carolina League North to 2.5 games with 23 contests remaining in the season s opening half. EIGHTH-INNING ANGUISH: Potomac s eighth-inning onslaught was triggered by Estarlin Martinez. The outfielder crushed a liner to left and then hustled to second just ahead of Logan Moon s excellent throw. Narciso Mesa then bunted Martinez over to third. Skoglund got two strikes on Chris Bostick, but the infielder came up with the biggest hit of the game when he doubled in Martinez. Potomac added an insurance tally when Stephen Perez singled up the middle...aside from the eighth-frame issues, the other problem for Wilmington was that Potomac starter Phillips Valdez matched Skoglund pitch-for-pitch through six innings. In his Advanced-A debut, the 23-yearold yielded just three hits and one run in six frames of work. He gave way to reliever Derek Self in the seventh, and the right-hander picked up right where Valdez left off. Self allowed just one base runner in two innings pitched. Nick Lee relieved Self in the ninth inning, and got the save. ANOTHER LONG OUTING FOR SKOGLUND: Skoglund was the tough-luck loser on Friday despite turning in his longest outing of the season, and the second-longest by any Blue Rock in The 14th-ranked prospect in the Royals system according to Baseball America worked eight innings, his team-best third start of seven or more frames this year. Jakob Junis has the longest outing by a Wilmington pitcher, working nine frames against Winston-Salem on May 19. Junis also did not get the win that night. Skoglund s scoreless streak came to a close in the outing as well. The southpaw entered Friday having posted 13 consecutive frames without allowing a run--a streak that stretched over his last two starts. He retired the first six batters he faced on Friday before yielding a score in the third. DOUBLE THE PLEASURE: As the old saying goes, turnabout is fair play. One night after the Wilmington Blue Rocks offense was hurt badly by a pair of double plays, the Blue Crew used two twin-killings to its advantage on Friday. Skoglund induced them both, and now leads the Wilmington staff with eight double plays forced on the season. As a team, Wilmington pitching has produced 35 double plays in 2015, but the offense has hit into a league-high 49 twin killings on the campaign--13 more than the next-highest total in the eight-team loop. ROSTER MAINTENANCE BEHIND THE PLATE: The Blue Rocks made a roster move prior to the game on Friday. Parker Morin was added to the active roster, as Cam Gallagher was placed on the disabled list. Gallagher was attempting to beat a throw to first base in game one of Wednesday s doubleheader, but was injured on his way. He would stay in the contest to run the bases the rest of the frame, but was replaced by Santiago Nessy in the field the next half inning. Morin spent the 2013 season with the Blue Rocks, when he hit.226 with a homer and 30 RBIs in 88 games. He split last year between Triple-A Omaha, Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Rookie-level Idaho Falls, and began this year in extended Spring Training. THEY SAID IT, MANAGER BRIAN BUCHANAN: Eric Skoglund obviously deserved better than to take a loss. He was outstanding. That eighth inning he just left a couple pitches up and they got him with a couple hard hit balls. That s what happens when you don t score more than one run...i don t think he was tired, I just think he left some balls up. I guess you could say that s fatigue, but I felt good about leaving him out there and would do it again. Sometimes it just doesn t work out...i think we had good at bats. We battled and competed, we just didn t get rewarded for it... (Ramon Torres) is starting to turn on the ball a little bit here lately. He s got some pop for a little guy. If they re going to throw him in he can drive the ball and if they re going to throw him away he ll slap it and take his singles...i (switched the lineup hitting Carlos Garcia lead off and Torres second) just to get guys into some different roles. They re going to have to be able to do that when they move up. I like to just move guys around in the order to see how they react to different slots. I mean those two have the skills that you can hit them one-two in the order either way and it s not going to make that big a difference. Upcoming Probable Starters and Schedule Today s Starters WIL: RHP Jakob Junis (2-3, 3.44) vs. CAR: RHP Andrew Waszak (1-3, 3.94) Jakob Junis gets the call tonight for the Wilmington Blue Rocks. The right-hander was taken in the 29th round of the 2011 draft by the Kansas City Royals out of Rock Falls High School in Rock Falls, Illinois, bypassing a scholarship to North Carolina State University to go pro. In his first season at the Adv.-A level, Junis has been a stable force in the Wilmington rotation. The opening day starter currently leads the team with 55 innings pitched, and is third on the team in strike outs with 46. He has also gone deeper into a game than any other pitcher on the squad this year, as he tossed nine innings of one-run ball back on May 19 against Winston-Salem. Junis will be making back-to-back starts against Carolina, as his last outing came on May 24 against these same Mudcats. In that contest, he went five innings, allowing two runs, seven hits, and one walk, striking out two and picking up the win. Andrew Waszak takes the ball this evening for the Carolina Mudcats. Waszak was born in Rochester Hills, Michigan, and stayed close to home to play college ball, choosing to attend Michigan State University. The righty was a third-team All-Big Ten selection during his senior season in 2013, and he posted a record of and an ERA of 3.82 over four years as a Spartan. Waszak was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 22nd round (673rd overall) of the 2013 draft. He began last year in the Carolina League (with then Atlanta affiliate Lynchburg), but after five games (four starts) and a 9.20 ERA, he was sent down to Low-A Rome, and eventually to Rookie Level Danville, where he would finish the season. Waszak has bounced around the levels this season, beginning in the Carolina League for two games, then getting the call to Double-A Mississippi for a pair of contests. After that, he pitched in one game for Low-A Rome, before returning to Carolina where he has stayed for five appearances. At the Adv.-A level this year, Waszak has appeared in seven games, with his last three being starts. His last time out was against these Blue Rocks on May 24. Waszak got the loss, throwing five innings, allowing three runs on five hits, and striking out three Regular-Season Series: WIL vs. CAR Date Site Result WP LP Save 4-13 CAR L 4-3 Waszack (1-0) Caramo (0-1) None 4-14 CAR PPD 4-15 CAR W 2-1 Junis (1-1) Gil (0-2) Yambati (2) 5-22 WIL W 3-1 Caramo (2-2) Furney (0-1) Rico (1) 5-23 WIL W 1-0 Skoglund (3-1) Webster (0-1) Alvarez (1) 5-24 WIL W 10-2 Junis (2-3) Waszak (1-3) McCarthy (1) 5-25 WIL W 5-1 Goudeau (1-0) Walters (1-1) None 5-30 CAR 5-31 CAR 5-31 CAR 6-1 CAR 6-2 CAR 7-19 CAR 7-20 CAR 7-21 CAR 7-31 WIL 8-1 WIL 8-2 WIL 8-11 WIL 8-12 WIL 8-13 WIL 8-24 CAR 8-25 CAR 8-26 CAR Sunday, May 31 at CAR 5:00 p.m. LHP Cody Reed (4-2, 1.44) vs. LHP Blair Walters (1-1, 3.00) WGLS-FM 89.7 Sunday, May 31 at CAR Game 2 TBA vs. LHP Andy Otero (0-1, 2.25) WGLS-FM 89.7 Monday, June 1 at CAR 7:00 p.m. RHP Alec Mills (3-3, 3.02) vs. TBA WGLS-FM 89.7 RADIO: Rowan Radio, 89.7 WGLS-FM WEBCAST: wgls.rowan.edu or bluerocks.com Wilmington Blue Rocks Game Notes

He previously spent time as a Manager in the Midwest League, Gulf Coast League, and Florida State League as well. During his Major League playing career, Slazar played for four teams and compiled a career stat line of.261/.293/.381 with 94 homeruns and 1070 career hits. Mudcats pitchers have been preforming well this season. Heading into the series, Carolina s staff holds a solid 3.46 ERA. They are also third in both runs allowed with 160, and earned runs with 141. Despite the fact that their offense ranks near the bottom of the league in most major offensive categories, Carolina has been the hardest team in the circuit to strike out this year, notching only 279 punch outs. Johan Camargo starts his second stint in Advanced-A in 2015 after playing in 17 games for Lynchburg last season. Camargo is the 8th best prospect in the Braves organization according to Baseball America. The 21-year-old shortstop enters the series batting.280 in 42 games played. He also enters riding a seven-game hitting streak. Camargo is described by Baseball America as a fluid, line drive hitter who can spray the ball to all fields. He has a plus arm from shortstop, despite average speed for a middle-infielder. Originially projected as a starter, Mauricio Cabrera has spent the 2015 season in Carolina as a reliever. The 21-yearold righty is ranked as the 14th best prospect in the Braves organization according to Baseball America and is making spending his second stay at Advanced-A. Cabrera started three games in 19 appearances for Lynchburg last year after getting called up from the Rookie-Level GCL Braves. He dealt with forearm dsicomfort that kept him sidelined after being called up. He moved to the bullpen to hopefully harness his control as he walked 5.9/9IP last season. He throws a mid-90s fastball with an inconsistently good slurve.

3 TONIGHT S BLUE ROCKS STARTING PITCHER #24 RHP Jakob Junis Acquired: Selected in the 29th round of the June 2011 Amateur Draft Born: September 16, 1992 in Jacksonville, AR Age: 22 Resides: Rock Falls, IL Ht: 6-2 Wt: 225 College: None Bats/Throws: Right/Right Pitch Repertoire: Fastball, Changeup, Curveball Jakob Junis: Entering his fourth year of professional baseball, all in the Kansas City Royals organization, Jakob Junis was a 29th round pick by the Royals out of the 2011 draft. The righty was born in Jacksonville, Arkansas, but grew up in Rock Falls, Illinois. He began his career with the Burlington Royals in the Appalachian League, with his pro debut coming on June 19, 2012 against Pulaski. In that contest, he threw five scoreless innings, allowing only five hits and striking out two. Junis first pitched in full season ball last year with the Low-A Lexington Legends, and was even their opening day starter. In fact, Junis has gotten the call on opening day three times in his career, with his most recent coming on April 9 of this year against Myrtle Beach. Possibly his best start as a pro came on May 18, 2014 with Lexington. In that start, Junis did not allow a hit in eight frames, giving up only one walk and hitting a batter against Hagerstown. Last Time Out: Junis made his last start on May 24 against these same Carolina Mudcats at Frawley Stadium. The righty produced his second-shortest outing of the season in that contest, as he could only complete five frames. Only his opening day start on April 9 against Myrtle Beach (four innings) was shorter. In his five innings, Junis allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out a pair of batters. He left with a 3-2 lead, and his team would eventually blow the game open in the bottom of the eighth with seven runs. Wilmington would go on to win by a final of 10-2, the most runs the Rocks have scored in a game Junis has pitched this season. The previous high in terms of run support for Junis was six on May 1 against Winston-Salem. More Than Just Baseball: Junis was obviously a standout on the diamond during his high school days, but he also excelled in basketball before turning pro. While Junis dominated on the mound for Rock Falls High in Illinois as a senior, notching a 1.10 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 51 innings pitched, he was an All-State performer in basketball as well. They Said It (Junis on playing multiple sports): I love basketball. (I m a) big fan of basketball, still follow it a lot. I think it s good to play multiple sports, I mean I was always growing up playing basketball (and) baseball. It s good to have that background. I don t think I d be the athlete I am today if I didn t play basketball and just played baseball, so I m very fortunate that I did have the opportunity to play all through high school and achieve what I did in basketball, because it really made me the competitor I am today. Playing really hard (and) getting pushed by those coaches (was important), and not just on the baseball spiel. He s Been Everywhere, Man: When Junis was young, he played overseas in both Puerto Rico and Japan. His time in Puerto Rico came first, followed by a trip to Japan when he was a teenager. The Japan experience was with USSSA All-American. They Said It (Junis on playing overseas): When I was 10, 11, and 12 (years old), I went to Puerto Rico and played in a world series over there. That was a great experience, (and) a lot of fun. (I) went to Japan when I was 16 (years old) I believe, and that was for USSSA All-American, and that was a totally different experience than Puerto Rico if you can imagine that. It s good to kind of get to play in all these kinds of places and kind of see other kinds of players and kind of try and pick up on little things they may do and kind of put it towards your game. A Tough Call: Junis decided to begin his pro career straight out of high school, but he certainly didn t have to. He had a chance to pitch collegiately at North Carolina State before signing with Kansas City, but passed up the opportunity and chose to embark on his journey with the Royals instead. They Said It (Junis on signing out of high school): That was the toughest decision of my life. I was torn. (It) came down to one of the very last few days before the signing deadline, and it was very hard to pass that up, because I had a really good relationship with those guys at NC State. It was a very tough decision, and me and my family ultimately came to the conclusion that it s best to sign, and I haven t looked back since Appearances The Book on Jakob (2015) At Home: 1-2, 3.46 ERA On the Road: 1-1, 3.38 ERA LH Opp Avg:.246 RH Opp Avg:.229 Record when he pitches: 2-3 Wilmington Record when he starts: 5-4 Run Support (overall): 3.1 Run Support (starting): 3.1 ERA: 3.44 Season-High K s: Career-High K s: Last Win: Last Loss: Most IP, 2015: Most IP, Career: 8, 2x last (5-13) vs Potomac 12 ( ) vs. Billings 5-24 vs Carolina 5-8 vs Lynchburg 9.0 (5-19) vs Winston-Salem 9.0 last ( ) vs. Winston-Salem Career Numbers Year/Teams(s) W-L ERA IP 2012 (Burlington) (Idaho Falls) (Lexington) (Wilmington) Totals Date OPP G GS DEC ERA IP H R ER BB SO HR HBP WP Score Upon Exit Result Notes Apr. 1 1 L MB 3-1 L, 9-1 Season debut Apr. 2 2 W WIL 2-0 W, 2-1 Wilmington went ahead top 7 Apr. 20 POT 3 3 L POT 3-0 L, 3-1 First home appearance Apr. 4 4 ND WIL 3-0 L, 4-3 Recorded 200th career K May 1 WS 5 5 ND W, 6-1 First 8+SO game since 2014 May 8 LYN 6 6 L LYN 6-0 L, 6-0 Second game this year allowing 6 ER May 13 POT 7 7 ND W, 3-2 (10) First seven inning outing of season May 19 WS 8 8 ND W, 2-1 (12) Longest start by any Blue Rock May 24 CAR 9 9 W WIL 3-2 W, 10-2 Most run support for a pitcher this year
