4 This & That NO CHALLENGE SERIES--Neither manager was moved to request a replay review during the Minnesota series...ned Yost has asked for just eight reviews in Kansas City s last 53 contests, the most recent last Sunday in Arlington on what turned out to be an inning-ending double play...yost and the Royals have been extremely successful this year, going in reviews, tying San Francisco s Bruce Bochy for the most overturned calls in the Majors...on the flip side, KC s opponents have gone 15-for-34 (44%) in replay challenges. BIG FLIP WITHIN THE CENTRAL--Kansas City s success to this point can be directly tied to its reversal of fortune within the American League Central...last night s loss dropped the Royals to just record in the last 37 meetings with Central Division foes, including a 12-4 mark in the last 16...KC started the year just 5-15 when playing intradivisionally...the Royals will continue to play vs. the Central through the weekend, with Cleveland here and then will step out of the division again next week with three here against the Rangers and three in New York, before heading to Detroit for an important 3-game set that begins on September 8 and kicks off a race to the finish in which 16 of the last 20, including the final 13 will be within the Central. MINOR LEAGUE KUDOS--A pair of leagues announced their post-season All-Star squads on Thursday and the Royals organization placed a pair on each...in the Texas League, outfielder Lane Adams was named to the squad hitting.270 with 24 doubles, three triples, 11 homers and 37 stolen bases...righthanded pitcher Andy Ferguson also earned league honors with his record and 2.93 ERA, fanning 118 in innings...in the Carolina League a pair of pitchers earned honors representing Wilmington...Glenn Sparkman was the Pitcher of the Year, going 8-2 with a 1.40 ERA, striking out 113 in innings with only 22 walks...mark Peterson was the Relief Pitcher of the Year, posting a 1-2 record and 22 saves, with a 1.31 ERA in 33 appearances...also, Joey Greany for being selected as the PBSCCS Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year for the Carolina League, an honor chosen by his peers. NO DOG DAYS HERE--The month of August has been widely described as the dog days of summer in baseball, but the Royals have had little issue with the fifth month of the season, recording a Major League best 19-7 ledger with three games remaining...the Washington Nationals are next with 17 victories, while the closest A.L. club is Seattle with 16...KC s next win this month would be the most in August since the 1989 squad won 21. SHARPENING THE SHORT GAME--The Royals tacked on two more infield hits to up their American League leading total to 131 last night...kansas City has four in the Top 10 individually in infield knocks with Alcides Escobar tied for fourth with 23, followed closely by teammates Jarrod Dyson and Lorenzo Cain tied for sixth (22) and Nori Aoki tied for ninth (21)...KC is also among the elite in bunt hits with 21 on the season, one behind league leading Cleveland...Dyson, who dropped a perfect safety squeeze bunt here on Wednesday night, is tied for the league lead with nine bunt hits, while Aoki is fifth (6) and Escobar tied for 10th (5). BALANCING THE RIBBIES--While the Royals don t have any players with the eye-popping RBI totals but have used the balanced attack to get where they are this year...the Royals are the only club in the Majors with eight players possessing 40 or more RBI and KC actually has a ninth with the addition of Josh Willingham, though 34 of his 40 were accrued in a Minnesota uniform...the closest competitor with as many 40-plus RBI men are the Cleveland Indians (though Asdrubal Cabrera has been dealt), Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates with seven each. FOUR-RUN STEAK SNAPPED--Kansas City had its winning streak of 19 consecutive games in which it scored at least four runs halted with last night s 11-5 loss in 10 innings...it was the July 18 in Boston when KC fell the Royals are now 60-9 this year and since the start of the 2013 season, Kansas City is an astounding when plating at least four runs...conversely, the Royals are just if they can t get to four tallies. DAVIS AMONG BASEBALL S ELITE--Wade Davis continues to hold the Majors longest scoreless inning streak at 24.2, while his season ERA of 0.77 is tops in the Majors among all hurlers who have thrown at least 40.0 innings...the last run Wade allowed was on June 25th and has been the lone run surrendered in his last 46.0 innings for a 0.20 ERA dating back to April 26...since giving up two earned runs on April 5, Wade has allowed only two runs over his last 50 outings (53.0 innings) for a 0.34 ERA, while fanning 83...he nearly made it four full months without allowing an extra-base hit, but Minnesota s Kurt Suzuki spoiled the streak with a double on July 31. THE BEST BACK END GOING--Much of Kansas City s recent success can be traced to the seventh, eighth and ninth innings thanks to the combination of Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland, respectively...only two-thirds of that equation was employed last night, with Herrera working a perfect eighth and then Holly a scoreless ninth...the trio has combined to allow just 3 earned runs in 58.2 innings in this 26-8 span for a 0.46 ERA while fanning 62 and holding the opponents to a collective.152 average (30-for-197)...Herrera has totaled 15.0 shutout innings over KC s last 34 games, while he has 23.1 consecutive scoreless frames overall, which spans his last 23 outings...the only pitcher in baseball with a longer active streak is Davis, who is in the midst of a 26-game streak with 24.2-straight shutout innings, which includes 17.2 since July 22...Holland is the only one of the three to be scored upon, allowing 3 earned runs in 17.2 innings (1.53 ERA) since July 22, but has converted 15 of 16 save chances, including his 14th in a row in Texas a week ago tonight. HOLLY HOLDS BIG LEAGUE RESCUE LEAD--Greg Holland upped his Major League leading save total to 40 last Friday in Arlington...the last Royals pitcher to lead the A.L. in saves was Jeff Montgomery (45 in 1993), while Greg is the first to record back-to-back 40-save seasons since Dan Quisenberry did it in 1983 (45) and 84 (44)...Holly has made good of 40 of his 42 tries this year, including 33 of the last 34...over a longer haul, Holland has converted 80 of his last 83 attempts (96.3%) since May 30 of last season, the highest percentage among closers with at least 40 opportunities in that span...since that date, Greg has seven more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 73) and has allowed just 14 earned runs in innings for a 1.22 ERA...he recorded his 100th career save on August 8 and since posting his first career save on August 3, 2011 vs. Baltimore, Holland has gone 107-for-117 in save situations, the best save pct. at 91.5 among closers with at least 100 save opportunities...since becoming Kansas City s full-time closer on August 1, 2012, the day after Jonathan Broxton was dealt to Cincinnati, Holland has gone 103-for- 110 in save situations, the most saves in the majors while his 93.6 save pct. is the best among relievers with at least 80 save chances. vs. Indians (2014) vs. Indians (career) At Home (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Aoki Butler Cain Colon Dyson Escobar Gordon Ibanez Infante Kratz Moustakas Perez Willingham Catcher/Pitcher Matchups Starting Pitchers Breakdown (Team Record w/starters) Total KC Avg.
