Freshman infielder Tripp Shelton notched the first two hits of his collegiate career, including a two-run home run, to lead the Spartan offense. MacAneney also recorded two base knocks while senior designated hitter Aaron Wright added a RBI. Additionally, senior infielder Hunter King extended his reached base safely streak to 35 games dating back to last season. Bryce Harman and Travis Watkins went 3-for-4 to pace the Pirates. 5 LAST TIME OUT GREENSBORO, N.C. The Spartan offense exploded for 12 runs in the first three innings and UNCG cruised to a 16-7 win to complete the doubleheader sweep of Princeton. Senior outfielder Zac MacAneney went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a RBI while senior outfielder Nick Chapman chipped in with four RBI. Junior infielder Collin Woody and senior infielder Hunter King also tallied multiple RBI with three each. The Blue and Gold scored its 16 runs on 10 hits and took advantage of two Tiger errors. Freshman RHP Andrew Wantz earned his first collegiate start and improved to 2-0 as he tossed four innings and gave up five runs on eight hits while walking three. Cameron Mingo (0-1) threw just 1 and 1/3 innings and was tagged with the loss as he allowed seven runs on six hits with three walks and a strikeout. Wantz worked around a two-out walk to keep Princeton off the scoreboard in the top of the first before the UNCG offense went to work in the bottom of the inning. MacAneney homered to lead off the proceedings then senior outfielder Eric Kalblfiesch drew a two-out walk a couple of batters later. Junior catcher Jake Hall sent a single through the left side before senior infielder Aaron Wright brought Kalbfleisch home with a RBI single to right field. With two runners still on base, King sent a ball over the left field wall and into the trees for his first home run of the season that gave the Spartans a 5-0 advantage. A RBI groundout by senior outfielder Tyler Long and a RBI single by Woody made it 7-0 before the Tigers plated two runs in the top of the third to pull within five runs. A triple by Wright ignited another big inning for UNCG as the Spartans scored five runs on two hits and two errors in the half inning to pull ahead A big two-run double by Woody represented the only earned runs as the two errors resulted in three unearned for lefty Tyler Foote. Princeton touched up the UNCG bullpen a bit in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring five runs to make it a 12-7 game, but the Spartans would have the last word. A walk by Hall and a Wright hit by pitch with one out put runners on first and second before a balk moved them both into scoring position. King then worked a walk to load the bases for Chapman. He would lift a ball high over the right field fence for his first career grand slam to put an exclamation point on the contest and close out the scoring. BITS AND PIECES After putting together double-digit hits in just two of its first nine contests, UNCG has turned the trick in four of its last five outings... The Spartans are nearly halfway to matching their home run total from last season (25), hitting 11 so far this campaign... Woody and MacAneney enter this week with six-game hitting streaks while Woody has reached base safely in eight-straight contests... UNCG has three players who have hit in the same spot in the lineup for all 13 games - MacAneney (leadoff), Long (second) and freshman infielder Tripp Shelton (ninth)... In five home games this season, the Spartans are hitting.341 with a slugging mark of.634. UNCG is also perfect defensively with no errors in those contests... The Spartan pitching staff has struck out 10 or more batters in four games, including three of the last five. I M HONORED MacAneney earned his first career Southern Conference Hitter of the Week award for games spanning March 2-8 after hitting.409 with a slugging percentage of and an on base mark of.480 in five games. He also tallied nine hits, eight RBI, seven runs scored, two doubles, a triple, three home runs, three walks and 22 total bases during the week. SHUTDOWN MODE In UNCG s game at Elon, the bullpen duo of junior LHP Bryant Stafford and junior RHP Keaton Haack combined to hold the Phoenix to just two hits and no runs over the final 5 1/3 innings of the contest - giving UNCG a great chance to get back into the contest. The pair struck out four batters each while walking a combined three. PRESEASON LAURELS Junior RHP Ryan Clark heads into the season with a great deal of expectation as the Southern Conference coaches named him the league s preseason Pitcher of the Year. He also earned first-team preseason all-conference honors and was a member of the SoCon All-Freshman Team in Senior outfielders MacAneney and Kalbfleisch also earned preseason first team recognition while senior infielder Hunter King garnered a spot on the second team. WHAT A DEBUT Woody had quite the Spartan debut as he was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI in UNCG s 12-8 victory over High Point. He drew a walk in his first at bat before ripping a two-run, ground-rule double in his next appearance and roping a leadoff double to deep center in his third at bat. SPARTANS IN THE MLB DRAFT UNCG has had four players and one signee drafted in head coach Link Jarrett s two seasons at the helm of the program. Max Povse was the second-highest draftee in program history as he was selected in the third round (102nd overall) by the Atlanta Braves in the 2014 draft. Below is a look of all UNCG players drafted under Jarrett s watch. YEAR PLAYER ROUND ORGANIZATION 2014 Max Povse (RHP) 3rd Atlanta Braves 2014 Alex Durham (RHP) * 12th New York Mets 2014 Dylan Thompson (RHP) 31st Colorado Rockies 2013 Cambric Moye (C) 30th Los Angeles Angels of Anahiem 2013 Dominique Vattuone (RHP) 32nd Oakland Athletics * Denotes Signee ALL-CONFERENCE HONOREES The Spartans were well represented on the 2014 All-Southern Conference Teams as Hunter King and Sean Guite earned first-team recognition while Jordan McDonald and Eric Kalbfleisch garnered secondteam laurels. Additionally, Adam Swim was named to the All-Freshman Team. King and McDonald also landed on the SoCon Media Association Second Team. POTENT OFFENSE When Jarrett arrived in Greensboro two seasons ago, he brought with him a knack for offense and it has certainly showed. Before he took over the program, UNCG had never led the Southern Conference in batting average. However, the Spartans have paced the league in that statistic for two-straight seasons hitting.311 in 2013 and.310 last year. In 2013, Christian Wolfe led the SoCon and placed second nationally with a school single-season record.421 mark on his way to All-America honors. The Spartans rank sixth in the circuit so far this season with a.271 batting average and have four players hitting.300 or above led by MacAneney s.377 mark. PLAYING THE ACC UNCG played seven games against members of the Atlantic Coast Conference last season and picked up victories on three occasions - including a season series sweep of Wake Forest. It was the first time since 2004 that the Spartans swept the Demon Deacons. Since Jarrett took over the program two seasons ago, UNCG is 4-10 against ACC programs. L, 11-7 ACTIVELY LEADING Entering this week, Clark is the active career Southern Conference leader in earned run average (3.39, opponent batting average (.248) and hits allowed per nine innings (8.45) while MacAneney is tied for second on the list in triples (4) and third in batting average (.316). COMPLETE EFFORTS Clark threw his first career complete game last season against eventual SoCon regular season champion Western Carolina. Unfortunately, the Spartans could not cash in on the effort as the Catamounts edged the Blue and Gold by a 5-4 score. The complete game was one of three for UNCG last season as departed righty Max Povse picked up a 4-1 triumph over Big Ten foe Minnesota in Myrtle Beach and threw eight innings in a tough 2-1 loss at Wofford in May. WHERE HOME RUNS GO TO DIE The Spartan pitching staff proved to be very stingy in giving up home runs last season as UNCG allowed just 16 long balls to its opponents - the lowest mark in the Southern Conference by a long shot. Moreover, the Blue and Gold surrendered just five home runs at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. SCORE FOR MORE The Spartans were tough to beat last season when they scored six or more runs in a contest. In fact, 18 of UNCG s 21 victories occurred when the Blue and Gold reached the six-run plateau. However, the Blue and Gold was not able to secure a victory scoring less than three runs in an outing. HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE Since the UNCG Baseball Stadium opened in 1999, the Spartans have recorded 13 winning seasons and own an overall record of in the facility. UNCG s best campaign at home occurred in 2003 when the Spartans notched a mark of Last year, the Blue and Gold produced a mark in the friendly confines. HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE CONTINUED In the spring of 2014, a pair of incoming freshmen experienced tremendous success at the UNCG Baseball Stadium as Michael Bates and Shelton helped West Forsyth High School defeat Richmond County in the North Carolina 4A state championship series. Bates threw a complete game with six strikeouts in the Titans game one victory while Shelton smashed a three-run home run in the deciding game three. HOME STATE ADVANTAGE When looking at the 2015 UNCG baseball roster breakdown, it is evident that the program is committed to keeping North Carolina prep talent in the state. Of the 35 members of the squad, 24 hail from the Tar Heel State. That is nearly 70 percent SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE The UNCG baseball program will welcome 13 new student-athletes to campus beginning in the fall of 2015 as 10 high school seniors and three junior college players have declared their intent to play baseball for the Spartans. The signing class includes eight pitchers, three infielders and two outfielders, including six Perfect Game nationally-ranked recruits UNCG BASEBALL SIGNING CLASS Name Pos. B/T Ht. Wt.
