Chicago Cubs Los Angeles Dodgers Cleveland Indians St. Louis Cardinals Washington Nationals Colorado Rockies (15-14) vs. Chicago Cubs (15-10) April 30, 2018 Wrigley Field Game No. 26 Home Game No. 12 LHP Kyle Freeland (1-3, 4.33) vs. LHP Jon Lester (2-1, 3.29) GOT A BLANK SPACE, BABY : Tyler Chatwood allowed just two hits in 7.0-scoreless innings, and added a RBI single, as the Cubs blanked the Brewers yesterday, 2-0, to sweep the four-game set the Cubs tossed three shutouts in the series, and limited Milwaukee hitters to a.120 average (14-for-117) and no home runs. Chicago has shut out Milwaukee five times already this season, all coming in April marks the third time in MLB history that a team has blanked a single opponent five times in a calendar month the previous team to do so was the Washington Senators against the Cleveland Naps in August of 1910 (thanks Elias). Chicago s five shutouts this season are tied for the most in the majors the Cubs did not record their fifth shutout last season until September 1 vs. Atlanta. AND I ll WRITE YOUR NAME (FOR PLAYER OF THE MONTH): Despite having his career-best 11-game hitting streak snapped yesterday, Javier Báez enters the final day of the month in strong contention for March/April N.L. Player of the Month he leads the N.L. with 26 RBI and a.656 slugging mark, ranks second with 18 extra-base hits and 63 total bases, and ranks third with a OPS. His 26 RBI are the second-most in franchise history prior to May 1, trailing only Derrek Lee, who in 2005 had 28 RBI the only other Cub to reach 25 RBI prior to May 1 was Billy Williams, who reached that mark in Báez has seen 18 of his 28 hits go for extra-bases this season (seven homers, three triples, eight doubles) the 18 extra-base hits are tied for the most by any Cub in the season s opening month, as Derrek Lee had 18 to begin the 2008 campaign. Báez has clubbed seven homers to become the first Cubs second baseman since at least 1913 to reach seven homers before the end of April Ryne Sandberg (1996) and Rogers Hornsby (1931) each reached five homers before the end of April as second basemen. DON T SAY I DIDN T SAY I DIDN T WARN YA: Winners of four-straight, and eight of the last 10, the Cubs tonight host the Colorado Rockies for the first of three games the Cubs sit a season-high five games over.500 and have a chance tonight to reach 16 wins prior to May 1 for just the fourth time in franchise history the Cubs entered May with 17 wins in 2008 and 2016 and with 16 wins in The Cubs are in their first 25 games, two games ahead of their start last season en route to their second-straight N.L. Central Division title and thirdstraight appearance in the National League Championship Series the 2016 club was 19-6 through 25 games while the 2015 squad was SO IT S GONNA BE FOREVER : Chicago has tossed consecutive shutouts for the first time since September 27-28, 2015 vs. Pittsburgh and Kansas City the Cubs have not tossed three-straight shutouts since July 21-24, 1992 at Cincinnati (two games) and Houston (one). Chicago surrendered just two runs in the four-game set against the Brewers, holding Milwaukee scoreless in 34 of 36 innings marked the Cubs fewest runs allowed in a four-game set since June 2-4, 1919 vs. Pittsburgh (also two runs). The club has allowed just two hits in each of the last two games, marking the first time allowing two-or-fewer hits in consecutive games since September 14-15, 2008 against Houston in Milwaukee. OR IT S GONNA GO DOWN IN FLAMES: Nine of the Cubs first 11 games at Wrigley Field this season have been played with game time temperatures under 50 degrees however, temperatures are forecasted in the 70s (!!!) for the next three days. YOU CAN TELL ME WHEN IT S OVER : The Cubs are a perfect 13-0 when leading after six innings this season Cubs relievers have allowed just one run on three hits in 9.0 innings in the club s last four games (including 6.0-straight scoreless/hitless innings entering tonight), lowering their season ERA to 2.65 (27 ER/91.2 IP), good for third-best in the National League (Arizona, 1.70 and Milwaukee, 2.45). Brandon Morrow (10.0 IP) and Brian Duensing (8.0 IP) are the only qualifying N.L. relievers yet to allow a run this season Morrow has not allowed a run in his last 18.1 innings dating to last season, the second-longest active streak in the majors, trailing only Cleveland s Andrew Miller (18.2 IP). The Cubs bullpen has allowed just five home runs, tied for the fewest in the majors with Arizona and Atlanta relievers have not surrendered a longball in 10-straight games dating to last season, Brandon Morrow s 60.2-straight innings without allowing a homer is the longest active streak in the majors, while Steve Cishek ranks fourth with a streak of 39.2-straight homerless innings. IF THE HIGH WAS WORTH THE PAIN: After beginning the season with just seven quality starts and a 5.27 ERA (57 ER/97.1 IP) in the club s first 19 games, Cubs starting pitchers have tossed six-straight quality starts, going 4-1 with a 0.90 ERA (4 ER/40.0 IP) the starters have gone 28.0-consecutive innings without surrendering an earned run, the rotation s longest stretch since going 32.0-straight innings from July 4-8, 1976 (thanks STATS Inc.) tonight s starter, Jon Lester, was the last Cubs starting pitcher to allow an earned run, giving up two solo homers in the sixth inning, April 25 at Cleveland. Ed Hartig notes that the previous time Cubs starting pitchers went four-straight games in a single season without allowing an earned run was from September 22-27, 1935 vs. Pittsburgh (one game) and at St. Louis (three games) additionally, they had not accomplished the feat in four-straight games against a single opponent since June 25-27, 1912 at Cincinnati. CAUSE WE RE YOUNG AND WE RE RECKLESS : Javier Báez and Kyle Schwarber share the team lead with seven homers apiece it s the first time the Cubs have had at least two hitters reach seven home runs in the season s first month since the 2000 campaign that year, Shane Andrews and Sammy Sosa finished April with eight homers apiece while Henry Rodriguez added seven. Schwarber, who on Tuesday recorded his sixth career multi-homer game and first of 2018, is hitting.340 (16-for-47) with a double, five homers, 14 RBI, a.446 OBP and a.681 SLG (good for a OPS) in his last 14 games since April 10. The Cubs are second in the N.L. and fifth in the majors by averaging 5.20 runs per game Chicago s.336 on-base percentage is second the N.L. and seventh in baseball Chicago s.416 slugging percentage is second in the Senior Circuit (Braves,.440)..WE LL TAKE THIS WAY TOO FAR: Albert Almora Jr. and Javier Báez each had their career-high 11-game hitting streaks snapped yesterday Almora batted.370 (17-for-46) with four doubles, a homer, five RBI and a.942 OPS during the stretch, while Báez batted.400 (20-for-50) with seven doubles, a triple, three homers, 16 RBI and a OPS during the run. IT LL LEAVE YOU BREATHLESS : The Cubs have excelled lately at saving runs for when they matter in fact, the Cubs have won fourstraight games despite scoring three-or-fewer runs in all four games for the only time on record in the last 100 years on the flip side, the Cubs are one of just six teams this season to win at least two games when allowing seven-or-more runs as the Cubs won vs. Atlanta, April 14, and 9-7 at Colorado, April 22. OR WITH A NASTY SCAR: The Cubs have been hit-by-pitch a major league-high 24 times, six more than the next closest team (White Sox) Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant are tied for the MLB lead with seven HBP each.
