1 INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME NOTES GAME #91 / Road Game #47 Indianapolis Indians (41-49) at Pawtucket Red Sox (43-44) Thursday, July 16, First 7:05 p.m. EDT McCoy Stadium -- Pawtucket, Rhode Island Indians RHP Ian Snell (1-1, 0.45) vs. PawSox LHP Kris Johnson (3-9, 6.14) KRATZ TAKES HOME IL TOP STAR AWARD: Indianapolis Indians catcher Erik Kratz earned the Major League Baseball Advanced Media s IL Top Star Award after he went 2-for-2 with a walk, double and a two-run homer in the IL s 6-5 All-Star Victory over the PCL on Wednesday night at PGE Park in Portland, Oregon... In his first All-Star at-bat with one-out in the third inning, the right handed slugger smacked a double to left field... The backstop then came plateward for the IL s first score of the game when IL shortstop Reid Brignac (Durham Bulls) doubled to center to jump the IL out to a 1-0 lead... Kratz later blasted what turned out to be the game-winning hit when he launched a 3-0 fastball off of PCL knuckleballer Charlie Haeger (Albuquerque Isotopes) over the fence in left field for a two-out, two-run long ball... With his outstanding performance the 29-year old now makes it two consecutive seasons in which a member of the Tribe has brought home the Major League Baseball Advanced Media s IL Top Star Award as former Indians CF Andrew McCutchen, also received the award last season after he went 2-for-2 with two RBI in a 6-5 PCL victory at the Louisville Bats Louisville Slugger Field... Kratz entered the All-Star break ranked first among IL leading catchers in hits (54) and runs (29), second in home runs (5) and RBI (23) and also third in average (.269). The slugging backstop also ranks in the top five in the IL in caught stealing efficiency, having thrown out 33% percent of runners trying to steal against him, while his own six steals leads all International League catchers and all catchers in the Pirates organization. PRE-ALL-STAR BREAK REVIEW: Before the All-Star break this season the Indians saw a lot of turnover in their lineup due to call ups, injuries and a variety of other reasons... In the club s first 90 games their were 83 different 1-8 lineup variations, and no line up was exactly repeated more than twice all year... The Indians have also seen their pre-all- Star break leaders in games (OF Jeff Salazar, 76), at-bats (Salazar, 287), hits (OF Garrett Jones, 85), triples (OF Andrew McCutchen, 8), total bases (Jones, 139) and stolen bases (Salazar, 16) all move on to Pittsburgh with Jones also still tied with 1B/OF Steve Pearce for the pre-all-star break lead in home runs (12) and RBI (49). TONIGHT S TRIBE STARTER: Tonight s probable starting pitcher for Indianapolis, Ian Snell, is scheduled to face Pawtucket for the first time this season... Snell has faced the PawSox twice in his career, posting a 1-0 record and 2.31 ERA with 16 strikeouts and just three walks over two starts during the 2005 season... In his most recent outing this season, Snell took his first loss of the season, though he allowed just one earned run on seven hits and struck out four in six innings against Toledo on July In his first two outings with the Tribe this season, Snell first set a Victory Field record with 17 strikeouts, including 13 straight, in seven innings of work en route to a no decision against Toledo on June 28 and tossed the Indians first complete game shutout of the season, striking out six in a seven inning effort against Louisville on July 5. TONIGHT S OPPOSING STARTER: Set to oppose Snell is Pawtucket starting pitcher Kris Johnson, who will be facing the Tribe for the second time this season... In his previous start against Indianapolis on May 31, Johnson took a no decision after allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits, while walking five in just 4.2 innings of work... The left hander has struggled as of late, dropping his previous three outings after posting a 5.14 ERA (8 ER in 14 IP) and 21 hits in those three appearances... In his most recent start, Johnson took the defeat after allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits in just 3.0 innings pitched against Lehigh Valley on July 8. WELCOME BACK: Tonight the Tribe welcomes back C Robinzon Diaz, who was recently optioned from Pittsburgh and 3B Neil Walker, who is making his return after over a month on the disabled list... Both Diaz and Walker enjoyed a measure of success before they left the Indians this season... In six games with the Tribe in early April, Diaz posted a.350 average with two runs and three RBI, before he was promoted to Pittsburgh on April 21, where he hit.295 with one HR and 18 RBI in 31 games... Before he was placed on the disabled list on June 10, Walker batted.239 with a team-leading 15 doubles, 20 runs, seven home runs and 32 RBI in 51 games with the Tribe. MIGHTY MYROW: 1B/OF Brian Myrow went 1-for-4 and scored a run in the Tribe s final game before the All-Star break on July The left handed slugger has now reached base safely in 15 of his 19 games since joining the Tribe on June Myrow has also recorded a hit in seven of his last nine games and currently leads the Tribe with a.298 batting average... The Texas native also currently ranks tied for fourth in the International League with a.389 on-base percentage, while he also finished last season ranked first in the Pacific League in that same category with a.451 OBP. PEARCE CONTINUES TO PRODUCE: 1B Steve Pearce blasted a two-run home run in the ninth inning of the Tribe s final game before the All-Star break and continues to lead the Tribe with 12 long balls on the season... After he went 0-for-7 with two strikeouts in his first seven at-bats since returning to the Indians from the Pirates, the first baseman broke out with an RBI double in the ninth inning of the July 10 contest... After an 0-for-4 performance in his first game back Pearce is currently riding a four-game hit streak in which he is hitting.417 (5-for-12) with four runs, four doubles, a home run and six RBI... The 26-year old is currently ranked tied for sixth in the International League with 49 RBI, but before he was recalled by Pittsburgh on June 20 was ranked in the top 10 in the IL in many offensive categories... Before his promotion Pearce was riding a two-game hitting streak and was tied for second in the IL in RBI (43), tied for sixth in home runs (10), tied for eighth in walks (29), and tied for eighth in total bases (109). GIVE EM THE BOOT---CHECK: Indians closer Chris Bootcheck has been lights out for the Tribe this season... The All-Star reliever allowed just one runner in game two of the doubleheader on July 11 in what was his first appearance since June The right hander hasn t allowed a single score in his last 14 outings (13.2 innings) and has converted his last 10 save opportunities... Bootcheck was named the Indianapolis Indians June Player of the Month after he picked up seven saves and struck out 16, while holding opponents scoreless in 11 outings (10.2 innings)... Bootcheck also leads all hurlers in the IL, with at least 30 strikeouts, in strikeout to walk ratio with a 6.86 to 1 (48 SO vs. 7 BB) ratio, while also ranking fourth in the International League with 14 saves and tied for ninth in the IL with 31 appearances.
