1 INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME NOTES GAME #123 / Home Game #60 Syracuse Chiefs (62-59) at Indianapolis Indians (62-60) Sunday, August 15, First 2:05 p.m. EDT Victory Field -- Indianapolis, Indiana Chiefs RHP Jordan Zimmermann (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Indians RHP Jeremy Powell (8-8, 5.24 ERA) TODAY S TRIBE STARTER: Today s probable starting pitcher for Indianapolis, Jeremy Powell, will square off against the Syracuse Chiefs for the second time this season when he takes the hill this afternoon... In his first start of the year against the Chiefs, Powell came within an out of a complete game shutout, but instead settled for an 8.2 IP, one run win in a 4-1 Indians victory over the Syracuse Chiefs on July Prior to facing Syracuse this season, the right-hander last faced the Chiefs in a starting role when he was a member of the Ottawa Lynx rotation in During the 2000 campaign, Powell made three starts against the Chiefs and posted a 0-2 record and an 8.78 ERA (13 ER), while allowing 22 hits in 13.1 innings of work... Powell s most impressive outing against Syracuse that season came on July 9, when he limited the Chiefs to one run of eight hits in five innings of work, but did not receive a decision... More recently, Powell made three relief appearances against Syracuse during the 2009 campaign and posted a ERA (4 ER) in three innings of work without receiving a decision... In his most recent start, an August 9 outing against Norfolk, Powell was strapped with the loss after he gave up seven runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings of work in a 9-1 Tides victory... Overall this season, Powell has allowed opposing batters to hit.276 (111-for-402), but has still been able to hold opponents to a.224 average (22-for-98) when they lead off an inning as well as a.248 average (59-for-238) when the bases are empty... The California native has also posted notable batting average splits when he s both ahead and behind in the count to opposing hitters, as batters have hit a miniscule.215 (31-for-144) against Powell when he has the advantage, but opponents have turned in a.360 average (41-for-114) when the right-hander falls behind in the count. TODAY S OPPOSING STARTER: Set to oppose Powell in today s contest is Chiefs starter Jordan Zimmermann, who has appeared in at least one game for four different Washington Nationals minor league affiliates... In his most recent start, an August 10 outing for Triple-A Syracuse, Zimmermann held the Columbus Clippers scoreless over four innings of work and allowed one hit in a 1-0 Chiefs victory... In his only other Triple-A appearance thus far this season, Zimmermann tossed three scoreless innings in a start against the Rochester Red Wings on August 5 (Syracuse won the contest 8-2)... Zimmermann, who underwent Tommy John surgery in August 2009, began his road back to the Majors with a four-game stint with the Single-A Potomac Nationals from July In his four-start stretch with Potomac, the right-hander held opponents to only one unearned run in 13.0 innings of work, while striking out 13 batters without issuing a walk... Zimmermann then made one start for Single-A Hagerstown on July 26 and was strapped with a loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in five innings of work against the West Virginia Power... Following his two Single-A stints, Zimmermann progressed up to the Double-A level and made one start for the Harrisburg Senators... In his lone start against Double-A opponents thus far this season, the right-hander held Portland to one hit in 4.2 scoreless innings of work as the Senators beat RHP Casey Kelly (3.0 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) and the Sea Dogs Of note, Zimmermann became the first Washington Nationals/Montreal Expos pitcher to win the first two starts of his career since LHP Randy Johnson completed the feat in Interestingly enough, Zimmermann was the losing pitcher in Johnson s 300th win on June 4, The right-hander has yet to face the Indianapolis Indians in his professional baseball career. MIDDLE INFIELD MAGIC: In a season that has seen a number of Indianapolis Indians infielders promoted to the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Tribe s current double play pairing of SS Pedro Ciriaco and 2B Brian Friday has paid quick dividends... While the defensive chemistry between Ciriaco and Friday has been on display since Ciriaco s arrival on August 2, the offensive contributions have of both players have been significant as well... Since joining the Tribe, Ciriaco has batted.279 (12-for-43) with six extra-base hits, three steals and a team-leading nine runs scored in the month of August... Ciriaco is also in the midst of a six-game hitting streak, during which time the shortstop has batted.364 (8-for-22) with six runs scored, three doubles, one triple and two RBI... Friday has also been on a bit of a tear offensively of late as well, as the second baseman has at least one hit in eight of 12 contests, including seven of the last eight, since Ciriaco joined the team. SUCCESS AGAINST SYRACUSE: With last night s 4-3 win over the Chiefs, the Indianapolis Indians have now taken five of the first six games in the two teams eight-game season series... En route to a 5-1 mark against Syracuse thus far this season, Tribe batters have posted a.274 batting average (54-for-197) with 34 runs scored, nine doubles, four triples, three home runs, 31 walks and a.371 on-base percentage... At the plate, OF Alex Presley has hit an even.400 (10-for-25) with eight runs scored, six RBI and a.464 on-base percentage in six games, while Jonathan Van Every has batted.375 (3-for-8) with one run scored, one home run, two RBI, four walks and a.583 on-base percentage in four games... INF/OF John Bowker has hit.375 (3-for-8) with two runs scored in two games and INF Pedro Ciriaco has batted.571 (4-for-7) with two runs scored, two doubles, one triple and two RBI in two contests against Syracuse... On the mound, the Tribe has posted a 3.74 ERA (22 ER) in 53.0 innings of work, while allowing only 46 hits to go against 50 strikeouts... Two Indians relievers Steven Jackson (1.2 IP) and Jean Machi (2.0 IP) have yet to allow an earned run against the Chiefs thus far this season, while starters Jeremy Powell (1.04 ERA, 1 ER in 8.2 IP) and Mike Crotta (1.98 ERA, 3 ER in 13.2 IP) have each turned in strong efforts against Syracuse earlier this year. GUIDED BY THE LIGHT: INF Doug Bernier, INF/OF John Bowker, INF Akinori Iwamura, C Erik Kratz and OF Alex Presley have each enjoyed considerable success in day games during the 2010 campaign Bernier has played in 12 morning or afternoon contests and has posted a.294 batting average (10- for-34) with five runs scored, three doubles and four RBI to go along with a.342 on-base percentage... In two afternoon contests for the Tribe this season, Bowker has batted an even.500 (4-for-8) with three doubles and one RBI... In four day games since joining the Tribe, Iwamura has batted.385 (5-for-13) with five runs scored, two doubles seven walks and an astounding.600 on-base percentage... In 13 day games for the Indians, Kratz is bat ting a solid.306 (15-for-49) with eight runs scored, four doubles, one triple, two home runs, seven RBI and a.368 on-base percentage... Presley has played in six day games and has hit.400 (10-for-25) with six runs scored, two doubles, two triples, one home run, six RBI and an impressive.464 on-base percentage. PATIENCE AT THE PLATE: As a team, Indianapolis batters have drawn an International League-best 480 walks this season... The Tribe s 480 free passes place them 12 ahead of the South Division-leading Durham Bulls, who have drawn the second-most walks with 468 thus far in Overall, the Indians have drawn at least 100 more walks than nine other IL teams, including an astounding 150 more free passes than the Charlotte Knights, who rank last in the league in walks with 330.
