1 MEDIA INFORMATION Wilmington Blue Rocks (16-15) Carolina League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals vs. Potomac Nationals (14-18) Carolina League Affiliate of the Washington Nationals Game No. 32 Home Game No. 20 Frawley Stadium Wednesday, May 13, :35 p.m. BLUE ROCKS BREAKDOWN HOME: 11-8 AWAY: 5-7 STREAK: L2 LAST 5: 2-3 LAST 10: 5-5 DUEL IN DELAWARE: A two-out rally in the sixth inning was the difference maker as the Wilmington Blue Rocks dropped game one of their three-game series with the Potomac Nationals by a 2-0 final. The game was the definition of a pitcher s duel as Yender Caramo and Reynaldo Lopez traded scoreless frames until the aforementioned sixth inning. For Lopez, it was his second-consecutive start against Wilmington where he went at least five shutout innings. PIGGYBACK GOING STRONG: The one bright spot on Tuesday for Wilmington was the continued success of the piggyback combo of Yender Caramo and Luis Rico. Caramo was in fine form working through seven innings for the first time this year. Caramo is just the second Rocks pitcher to throw at least seven innings in a game this year as he joins Eric Skoglund, who did it back April 29 against Myrtle Beach. Caramo forced 11 grounballs, which led to 15 outs. Rico was equally impressive out of the pen, offering a change of pace to the style of Caramo who pitches to contact. Rico set down all six batters he would face, four of them on strikes. DOUBLE THE TROUBLE: The Wilmington offense cannot seem to avoid the double play this season. The Rocks grounded into another three twin-killings on Tuesday night, bringing their total this season to 33. That total is by far the most in the Carolina League, nine more than the next closest team in Winston-Salem (24). The Blue Rocks 33 double plays more than doubles that of the team with the fewest amount of twin-killings (Lynchburg - 16). The double plays have certainly been rally-killers for the Rocks, which may be why Wilmington has scored the fewest runs in the CL (107) despite having the highest team batting average (.260). GOOSE EGGS: With the 2-0 loss on Tuesday, the Rocks have now been shutout four times this season. Tuesday was their second shutout at the hands of Potomac. The Nationals handed the Rocks their first shutout of the season back on April 21 in a 6-0 Potomac victory. Wilmington went on to suffer shutouts at the hands of Winston-Salem and Lynchburg. This is their second shutout loss of this home stand, as the Rocks fell 6-0 to the Hillcats on May 8. Wilmington was shutout just eight times all of last season. THREE-TIME MAJOR LEAGUE ALL STAR DEPARTS: Three-time Major League All-Star Rafael Furcal joined the team on Friday. He played in four games for the Rocks, batting.188 with one extra-base hit. He played shortstop and at second base defensively during his time in Wilmington, which ended on Wednesday when he was promoted to Double-A. Furcal, 37, signed a free agent deal with the Kansas City Royals twice during this offseason. Since being signed as an amateur free agent by the Atlanta Braves in 1996, Furcal has never suited up for an American League organization before signing with Kansas City. Furcal is in the process of working his way back from a torn hamstring, which is why he stayed in Surprise, Arizona for extended Spring Training. The last time he made an appearance in a Major League game was last season with the Miami Marlins, where he batted.171 in just nine appearances. THEY SAID IT, MANAGER BRIAN BUCHANAN: (Reyanldo Lopez) throws 97 (miles per hour), that s basically (what makes him hard to hit against). He s got a good breaking ball, and he keeps the ball down, and anytime you have that it s going to be a long night. We had some chances, (but) couldn t come up with the big hit. He threw the ball well...(the double plays) just happens. Maybe with runners on base, (the offense is) trying a little too hard to get a hit to get that guy over. We re hitting into a ton of double plays. We ve got to do a better job with runners on base...you don t say anything (about the players who get promoted). You re losing guys, but it s a part of minor league baseball. They all understand. That s part of our job, to get guys moved up, so there s nothing (we can say). I hope at the end of the year, we have a totally different team. That s part of the development, and we got guys that will fill in. So far, we re doing fine without those guys. When you lose a player, someone s got to pick up the slack and move on...(yender Caramo) was throwing strikes. They were swinging at a lot of first pitches. I think they were trying to go up there (aggressively). He faced them (at Potomac), and pitched well against them. They were trying to get on him early, and he was making pitches to get them out...we were short a little bit (in the bullpen) tonight, and Caramo did a great job going seven innings, and with Luis Rico coming in (to finish the game), it s nice to give those guys a breather. THEY SAID IT, OUTFIELDER DEXTER KJERSTAD: (Reynaldo Lopez) pitches off his fastball. He has a really good fastball. He s got a 12-6 curveball with sharp break. He gets ahead in the count, and he attacks us. He s just one of those guys that s got good stuff...it s an exciting thing to see (teammates) move on It s good for everyone for that to happen, you re happy for them. It s good that guys are moving up out of here...a lot of the pitchers have good stuff (at the Advanced-A level). They pitch off their fastball, and they usually have a good out-pitch...we just need to keep out confidence up (in order to bounce back offensively). We ve been having a lot of good at-bats throughout (the recent games), and (we have to) just keep swinging (well). Upcoming Probable Starters and Schedule Today s Starters WIL: RHP Jakob Junis (1-3, 4.24) vs. POT: RHP Nick Pivetta (1-3, 1.41) Jakob Junis is tonight s starting pitcher for the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Junis was originally a 29th round pick in the 2011 draft by the Kansas City Royals, passing up an opportunity to play collegiately at North Carolina State in the process. The Rocks opening day starter has been up and down in Twice, Junis has shutout his opponent in a six inning start, but he has also allowed six earned runs in a pair of outings as well. He did so last time out on May 8 against Lynchburg, when he yielded half a dozen over 5.2 innings on eight hits (2 home runs) and a walk, while striking out seven. That game also snapped Junis s streak of four straight starts in which he threw at least six frames. The righty has pitched once against Potomac this year. He got the loss on April 20 while throwing six innings, giving up three runs and five hits, fanning a single batter in the process. Nick Pivetta takes the hill tonight for the Potomac Nationals. Pivetta hails from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and was a fourth round selection by the Washington Nationals in the 2013 draft out of New Mexico Junior College. The right-hander was a standout in his native Canada, pitching for the Canadian Junior National team from 2009 to His record may not reflect it, but Pivetta has been great for Potomac in He has only given up as many as two earned runs in a start twice all season, and has yet to have a batter take him deep through his six appearances and 32 innings so far. Pivetta s last appearance came against the Blue Rocks in piggybacking duty during game two of a doubleheader on May 7. He allowed three runs (though none of which were earned) over six innings with eight hits, a walk, and three strikeouts, picking up the tough loss in the contest Regular-Season Series: WIL vs. POT Date Site Result WP LP Save 4-20 WIL L 3-1 Pivetta (1-1) Junis (1-2) Bacus (2) 4-21 WIL L 6-0 Rauh (2-0) Reed (2-1) None 4-22 WIL W 6-3 Green (1-0) Schwartz (0-2) Yambati (4) 5-5 POT PPD 5-6 POT PPD 5-7 POT L 2-1 Lopez (1-0) Rico (2-1) Bacus (3) 5-7 POT W 3-1 Caramo (1-1) Pivetta (1-3) Green (1) 5-12 WIL L 2-0 Lopez (2-0) Caramo (1-2) Lee (1) 5-13 WIL 5-14 WIL 5-27 POT 5-28 POT 5-29 POT 6-25 WIL 6-26 WIL 6-27 WIL 7-4 POT 7-5 POT 7-6 POT 8-14 POT 8-15 POT 8-16 POT 8-18 WIL 8-19 WIL 8-20 WIL Thursday, May 14 vs. POT 6:35 p.m. LHP Cody Reed (2-2, 2.08) vs. RHP Lucas Giolito (0-1, 10.38) WGLS-FM 89.7 Friday, May 15 at LYN 6:30 p.m. RHP Alec Mills (2-1,3.00) vs. LHP Luis Lugo (0-2, 5.19) WGLS-FM 89.7 Saturday, May 16 at LYN 6:30 p.m. LHP Eric Skoglund (2-1, 2.94) vs. RHP Mitch Brown (1-3, 5.90) WGLS-FM 89.7 RADIO: Rowan Radio, 89.7 WGLS-FM WEBCAST: wgls.rowan.edu or bluerocks.com Wilmington Blue Rocks Game Notes

Keister started his managerial career in 2012 with the GCL Nationals would be the only year Keister s team went under.500 (27-33). He led the Hagerstown Suns of the South Atlantic League to 80 wins in 2013 and finished the regular season in 2014 with a record. Wilmer Difo, the seventh best prospect in the Washington Nationals organization according to Baseball America was near the top of the Carolina League in numerous categories through the first month of the season. Potomac will be without their star infielder going forward, however, as he was called up to Double-A Harrisburg on April 30. One week later, the P-Nats brought in right-handed pitcher Reynaldo Lopez, the third best prospect in the Nationals system according to Baseball America. Lopez spent the first month of the season in extended spring training before being assigned to the Adv.-A Nationals. He even made his season debut against the Blue Rocks on May 7 in the first game of a doubleheader. Lopez picked up the victory, tossing five shutout innings, allowing only two hits and striking out three. Blue Rocks pitchers may have to steer clear of Potomac outfielder Isaac Ballou. Entering the series, Ballou leads the current roster in batting average at.286, hits with 30, runs with 18, and total bases with 42. On April 18th, Ballou recorded his first four-hit game since 2013 when he was with Class A (Short) Auburn. Ballou can also hurt you on the base paths, as he already has six steals this season and has not been thrown out yet. Given their proximity to their Major League affiliate, Potomac never has a shortage of big leaguers stopping by on rehab assignments. Already this season, Potomac was graced with the presence of Jayson Werth who went 1-for- 6 in three games at Advanced-A with a solo homer. Last season, the Blue Rocks had to face Gio Gonzalez who they roughed up for eight runs in 3.2 innings in a losing effort. Bryce Harper also made his way to Potomac last season where he played in two games, collecting a homer and four RBIs as well as a couple of walks. I ve always been around Delaware growing up,going to Delaware beaches and stuff like that so I m really familiar with the area. A lot of my friends went to the University of Delaware so I definitely like to play here. It helps out the family a lot because they get to come down and watch games whenever they want...(the 2014 Carolina/California League All-Star game) was a great experience being here in Wilmington in front of all the same fans. Me, only living about an hour away, my family and friends came and got to see the game. A lot of the players in that game are definitely going to be playing in the big leagues someday so it was a cool experience to meet some of those guys and play beside them...i shortened my swing up a little bit. The first half of last year I struggled and the second half I kind of put things together and figured out who I am as a hitter. Hopefully I can keep going forward from where I ended up last year.
