Chicago last evening fell to 26-4 (.867) when entering the sixth inning with a lead still, the.867 winning percentage when leading entering the sixth is fourth-best in the N.L., surpassed only by San Diego (24-2/.923), Milwaukee (33-3/.917) and San Francisco (27-3/.900). The Cubs six runs allowed in last night s sixth inning were more than they had surrendered in their previous 33 innings combined (five runs), going back to the start of this week s three-game set against the Dodgers. BÁEZ AT BAT: Javier Báez, who last night delivered a two-run double, has four extrabase hits (3 2B, 1 3B) in his last two games after collecting just one in his previous 15 contests from June 3-19 his 13 stolen bases and six triples lead the team while his 14 homers are tied for the lead (with Schwarber) Báez is the first Cub with at least six triples and 14 homers prior to the All-Star Break since Billy Williams in 1967 (8 3B, 15 HR) thanks to Chris Kamka. Moreover, Báez 13 stolen bases have come in 14 attempts his 92.9-percent stolen base success rate is tied with the Angels Mike Trout for the best in baseball. Báez aims to become the first Cubs right-handed hitter to reach 15 homers and 15 steals in a season since Alfonso Soriano did so in both 2007 and 2008 the last Cubs second baseman to reach 15 homers and 15 steals was Ryne Sandberg in DUECES WILD: Tonight s Cubs starter José Quintana has posted a 2.38 ERA (6 ER/22.2 IP) and a.177 opponent average (14-for-79) in his last four starts since May 31, having allowed just two runs in each of his last three outings he s struck out 22 batters in this four-start stretch while walking exactly two in each of the four starts. Quintana has posted a 1.03 ERA (4 ER/35.0 IP) with a 3-2 record in six starts against N.L. Chicago is currently one-game behind Milwaukee for the top spot in the N.L. Central Division, having been 4.5 games behind the Brewers the morning of May 31 the Cubs are 13-7 in their last 20 games to close the gap. CURRENT EVENTS: In their last 24 games since May 27, the Cubs are 16-2 when scoring at least two runs in a game the team has been held to one or no runs in six of eight losses in that stretch. Chicago is now 17-9 in its last 26 games since May 25, the most wins in the N.L. in that span and tied for second-most in the majors with Houston and Seattle (Yankees lead with 19). GETTING DEFENSIVE: According to Fangraphs.com, Cubs position players have recorded 39 defensive runs saved this season, third-most in the majors behind the Diamondbacks (54) and Brewers (50) Cubs outfielders have logged 19 defensive runs saved, fifth-most among big league outfield corps (Arizona leads, 30). Cubs outfielders have 14 assists thus far, tied for the most in the N.L. with the Mets and tied for sixth-most in the majors Kyle Schwarber s seven outfield assists are tied for the most in the N.L. with Milwaukee s Lorenzo Cain. BOTH FINE RATIOS: Kyle Schwarber, who homered both Tuesday and Wednesday, has averaged one home run every at-bats this season (14 HR/209 AB), the third-best ratio in the N.L. behind Washington s Bryce Harper (13.37) and Cincinnati s Eugenio Suarez (14.20) Schwarber has averaged one walk every 5.91 plate appearances, the third-best mark in the N.L.
