The Cubs tonight aim to avoid losing a fifth-straight game tonight, which would match their season long skid from June since ending that skid on June 30, the Cubs have turned in a record (.630), the third-best record in all of baseball behind only Pittsburgh (37-16,.698) and Kansas City (36-20,.643). After tonight s game, the Cubs will enjoy an overnight return flight to Chicago and play a game tomorrow against Cincinnati to start a six-game homestand against the Reds and Arizona Diamondbacks these six games are the lone home games for the Cubs from August 25-September 17, as the Cubs are in the midst of a stretch in which they play 17 of 23 games away from Wrigley Field. A MONTH FOR THE BOOKS: Jake Arrieta enters his final August start 5-0 with a 0.54 ERA (2 ER/33.1 IP) and tonight looks to match Boston s Joe Kelly as the only two pitchers in all of baseball with six wins in August. Jake is only the fifth Cubs pitcher in the last 30 years to win five games in August, the first since Mark Prior in 2003 only six pitchers in franchise history have reached six wins in August, none since Rick Sutcliffe went 6-0 in 1984 the others?: Rick Reuschel (7-0 in 1979), Ray Burris (6-1 in 1976), Charlie Root (6-2 in 1927), Guy Bush (6-0 in 1926) and Claude Hendrix (6-0 in 1918). Arrieta s 0.54 ERA this month is the lowest by a qualifying Cubs pitcher since Guy Bush turned in a 0.17 ERA (1 ER/51.2 IP) in August of Starting June 21, Jake has gone 10-1 with a 1.17 ERA (12 ER/92.0 IP) in 13 starts, the only 10-game winner in this span and matching Clayton Kershaw for the lowest ERA in the majors in this span Jake s only loss during this stretch was when the Cubs were no-hit by Cole Hamels on July 25. START ME UP: Jake Arrieta last week became the first pitcher in the majors to 16 wins he is the first Cubs pitcher to reach 16 wins since Ryan Dempster and Ted Lilly each won 17 games in 2008 Arrieta has recorded a quality start in each of his last 13 outings, the longest streak by a Cubs starter since Greg Maddux had 14- straight quality starts in Since 1914, there have been only six instances in club history where a Cubs pitcher has recorded 13 or more quality starts in row: Arrieta (current), Maddux (14 in 1988 and 1992), Lon Warneke (17 in 1933), Grover Pete Alexander (15 in 1919) and Hippo Vaughn (13 in 1914) thanks to Ed Hartig. IN AWE OF AUGUST: The Cubs are 18-8 in August, trailing only Pittsburgh (19-7) for the best record this month in the National League the Cubs have now played.500 or better ball in every calendar month this season. Thanks to a record in June, a mark in July and the 18-7 mark in August, the Cubs have posted three-straight winning months for the first time since 2008 when the club did so in each of the first five months of the season. With 73 wins this season, the Cubs have already matched their win total from all of last season when the club finished HAVING A BLAST: Anthony Rizzo on Friday connected for a 441-foot home run off southpaw Clayton Kershaw, Rizzo s sixth home run off a lefty this season to tie Joey Votto for most home runs in the National League by a left-handed hitter off a left-handed pitcher Anthony leads N.L. lefties with 23 RBI off southpaw pitchers. Rizzo has 26 home runs this season and is just the fifth left-handed hitter in franchise history to reach 25 homers in multiple seasons (Anthony hit 32 home runs last year) Rizzo joins Billy Williams (10 times), Bill Nicholson (five), Henry Rodriguez (two) and Rick Monday (two) as franchise lefties with at least two seasons of 25 homers. ROAD WARRIORS: The Cubs own the second-best road record in the National League with a mark, good for a.540 winning percentage, trailing only St. Louis (37-27) the Cubs have won 15 of their last 24 road games dating to June 30. The Cubs have gone in their last eight road series and in their last 13 road series starting June 4. Prior to this trip, the Cubs had gone.500 or better in seven-straight road trips starting with their West Coast swing through San Diego and Arizona in mid-may overall, the Cubs have gone.500 or better during nine of their 11 road trips this season. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY?: From July 29-August 25, the Cubs won 21 games in a 25-game stretch for the first time since June 6-July 4, 1936 this 25-game run included two six-game winning streaks and a season-high nine-game winning streak. This marked only the second time in franchise history, and first time in more than 112 years, that the Cubs posted three winning streaks of at least six games in a 25-game stretch the other time? May 6-June 3, 1903, when the Cubs turned in a pair of eightgame winning streaks and a six-game winning streak during a 22-3 stretch over 25 games thanks to Ed Hartig. GIMME A BREAK: Hector Rondon has turned in a 0.44 ERA (1 ER/20.2 IP) in 20 appearances since the All-Star Break, the lowest ERA of any qualifying pitcher in the majors in that span. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR CREDENTIALS: Kris Bryant on Monday hit his 20th home run of the season, the most in franchise history by any player in his first big league campaign he is only the fifth rookie in franchise history to reach 20 homers, joining Billy Williams (25 in 1961), Walt Moryn (23 in 1956), Geovany Soto (23 in 2008) and Tyler Colvin (20 in 2010). Bryant leads all major league rookies in RBI (77), slugging percentage (.475), on-base percentage (.365), OPS (.840), game-winning RBI (11) and runs scored (72) he ranks second in home runs, trailing only Joc Pederson (23). THIS IS HIGHLY OFFENSIVE: The Cubs have hit 56 home runs since the All-Star Break, second-most in the National League (the Mets have 57) and fifth-most in the majors in the team s last 17 games, Chicago has belted 33 long balls for an average of 1.9 homers per contest the Cubs rank second in the N.L. with 41 homers in August (the Mets have 43).
