(434) Website...LibertyFlames.com Games May 5 & 7, 2011 UNC ASHEVILLE BULLDOGS (15-25, 7-11 Big South) The Games After going unbeaten in four home games this past weekend, the Liberty Flames (26-19, 12-6 Big South) will host the UNC Asheville Bulldogs (15-25, 7-11 Big South) in a three-game Big South series at Worthington Stadium, Thursday and Saturday. The series will open Thursday night, with fi rst pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, the Bulldogs and Flames will meet in a doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m. The doubleheader will also serve as Jeff Taylor Memorial Scholarship Day. Jeff Taylor Memorial Scholarship Day Saturday afternoon s doubleheader has been designated as the Jeffrey Owen Taylor Memorial Scholarship day. The recipient of the scholarship honoring the late Liberty professor will be announced. Jeff Taylor was a former Liberty University professor and avid baseball fan, who tragically passed away in April The scholarship fund benefi ts Liberty University students who are enrolled in the Athletic Training Education Program. This year s recipient will be annnounced in a short ceremony between games. The late Liberty University Athletic Training professor began working at Liberty in 2000, as the head athletic trainer in the Liberty athletics department. In 2003, he became the Clinical Coordinator for all Athletic Training students. Taylor was also an athletic trainer at UNC Asheville for eight years. One of the teams he worked with during his time at Asheville was the Bulldog baseball program. On Deck Liberty will travel to Boiling Springs, N.C., for a three-game series against the Garnder-Webb Bulldogs, May at John Henry Moss Stadium. The series will be the fi nal regular-season road series for the Flames. Following the Flames All three games may be heard LIVE on 90.9 FM The Light radio or online at Liberty- Flames.com. Nick Pierce will handle play-by-play duties and former Flames pitcher Doug Wallace will provide commentary for the games. In addition, all three contests will be video streamed LIVE. Since taking over the program for the 2008 season, Liberty has won 35 or more games twice and last season posted only the second 40-win campaign in the 37-year history of the program. The Flames notched a record during his fi rst three seasons on Liberty Mountain. On May 2, 2010, Toman recorded his 100th career victory, as the Flames defeated Gardner- Webb, 10-7, at Worthington Stadium. The sixth coach in program history, Toman became the fastest Liberty baseball head coach to amass the milestone, passing fi rst coach Al Worthington, by reaching his 100th win in 160 games, six fewer than Worthington. The impressive strides made by the program have not gone unnoticed. This past November, Rivals.com cited Liberty as one being one of college baseball s top 10 rising programs. Last season, the Flames had their best season under Toman, posting a school record for wins in a single season with a record. The team s ledger was boosted by a 21-8 road mark, the nation s 10th-best road record in In addition, Liberty recorded a 19-7 mark in Big South play, eclipsing its record of the previous season for most victories by the school since joining the conference in The Flames fi nished second in the league s regular season and were conference runner-up at the Big South Baseball Championship. Pitcher Shawn Teufel became the fourth player from one of Toman s Liberty squads to be taken in the MLB Draft. The two-time Big South all-conference fi rst team pitcher and National Pitcher of the Year Watch list member capped a strong senior campaign by being selected by the Detroit Tigers. In 2009, Liberty recorded a overall record, while posting a 17-9 mark in Big South Conference play. Liberty set a new fi elding standard in 2009, committing the fewest errors, 53, and fi nishing the year with the highest fi elding percentage,.974, in team history. From that infi eld, third baseman Tyler Bream was named a Freshman All-American by the Collegiate Baseball News. Pitcher Andrew Wilson became the third player during Toman s time at Liberty to be taken in the MLB draft (Atlanta Braves). In 2008, the Flames fashioned a record in the month of May to fi nish Toman s fi rst season at Liberty with a mark. The record made Toman the winningest fi rst-year coach in the program s history. He guided the Flames to their third straight Big South Championship title game appearance, claiming the conference s runner-up position in Liberty s May record was the best ever by a Flames team. In addition, the Liberty pitching staff set a new season strikeout record, fanning 508 opposing batters during the year. The Flames strikeout total led the Big South Conference and their 8.2 strikeouts per nine innings ranked 22nd nationally at season s end. Two pitchers from the staff, Ryan Page and David Stokes, went on to be drafted and play in the professional ranks. Page was taken in the 20th round of the MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, while Stokes was picked in the 28th round by the Detroit Tigers. Liberty fi nished its season with a 14-7 record in conference play. The mark allowed the Flames to claim the No. 2 seed for the Big South Championship, their highest seed for the Big South Baseball Championship since a No. 1 seed in Liberty would go on to post four consecutive doubledigit victories during six games in the Big South Championship to set a championship record with 55 runs scored. Toman was named the sixth head coach in the history of the Liberty Baseball program in June 2007, after 11 seasons as the senior member of Ray Tanner s coaching staff at South Carolina. Toman worked a total of 18 years alongside Tanner, dating back to the 1990 season at N.C. State. During his time at South Carolina, Toman served as recruiting coordinator and coached the catchers. Known as one of the top recruiters in college baseball, the 22-year college coaching veteran was named the 2002 Baseball America/American Baseball Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year. Before joining the Gamecock staff in 1996, Toman served under Tanner for seven years at N.C. State. Toman has recruited 15 top 25 classes, including all 11 of his seasons at South Carolina. During his fi nal years with the Gamecocks, he recruited many of the players who were members of the 2010 South Carolina National Championship team. From , three of the four Gamecock recruiting classes were ranked fi rst in the nation by Collegiate Baseball. During his time on the staff in Columbia, S.C., Toman and the Gamecocks made nine NCAA Regional appearances, including eight straight between 2000 and 2007, and three consecutive trips to the College World Series ( ). Linza recorded his fourth complete game of the season, running his mark to 7-3 on the year in the victory. The senior right-hander gave up an unearned run on six hits. He struck out seven and walked two batters. Linza allowed only one hit during the last fi ve innings. Liberty totaled eight hits in the game. Before coming to UNC Asheville, Smith was considered one of the top high school coaches in the nation at T.C. Roberson HS in Asheville. UNC Asheville will be looking to halt a four-game losing streak as they start an eight-game road swing. Currently, the Bulldogs are tied for eighth place in the Big South standings with a 7-11 conference record. Asheville enters the weekend, hitting.283 as a team and averaging 5.4 runs per game. So far this season, Liberty has taken advantage of its team speed, more than doubling its stolen base total from a year ago. The Flames have stolen 95 bases in 116 attempts this season, compared to 2010, when the Flames swiped 57 stolen bases in 80 attempts during the entire year. The Flames 95 stolen bases leads the Big South Conference in the category. The Flames were ranked sixth in the nation in the latest NCAA Division I statistical report, for games played through May 1. Leading the way for the Flames is center fi elder Ian Parmley with 22 stolen bases. Catcher Casey Rasmus is 17-for-18 in steal attempts this season despite playing in just 33 games. Parmley is third in the Big South Conference in the category, while Rasmus is tied for fourth. Parmley s 22 steals are the most by a Liberty player since 2006, when third baseman Chad Miller had 24. Last season through 45 games, Liberty had already played 14 games which lasted three hours or longer, with the longest being 3:43 in a 14-13, 10 inning setback to Manhattan on March 20. This season, the Flames have had only fi ve games go over three hours, the longest being 3:26 in a wild, come-from-behind, 14-9 victory at High Point, April 10. Liberty scored seven times in the ninth inning to erase a 9-7 defi cit, en route to the win. Weekend Trio Getting It Done Entering this weekend, Liberty pitchers John Niggli, Steven Evans and Keegan Linza have established themselves as a trio to reckon with. The three weekend starters for the Flames have combined to post a 15-6 record with a 2.90 ERA over 208 innings in 30 starts, so far this season. They have also combined for six complete games, with Linza going the the full nine innings four times this year. Linza is among the Big South leaders in several categories. The senior right-hander leads the conference with seven wins and 79 2/3 innings pitched. He is third with a 2.37 ERA. Niggli and Evans also have their names on several of the Big South lists. Evans is fourth in strikeouts (59), tied for fi fth in innings pitched (70 1/3) and ninth in opponent batting average (.240) Two-HR Games Abound Over 10-Day Stretch Three Flames hit two home runs in a game over a stretch of 10 days from April Before the stretch, no Liberty player had connected for more than one round tripper in a game this season. Designated hitter Justin Richardson became the fi rst Flame to hit two home runs in a game this season in a 7-1 win over Presbyterian College during the fi rst game of a doubleheader, April 17 at Worthington Stadium. The blasts were his fi rst and second round trippers of the year. Richardson belted solo home runs in the fourth and sixth innings of the contest. Catcher Jeff Jefferson followed six days later in an 8-6 victory over VMI in game one of a doubleheader at Gray-Minor Stadium in Lexington, Va., April 23. Evans Pitches Way into Record Book With eight strikeouts Friday night in Liberty s 3-2, 12-inning victory over Le Moyne, senior left-hander Steven Evans moved into second place on Liberty s all-time strikeout list with 244. Only Mike Brown ( ), Liberty s career strikeout leader with 287, compiled more. Evans is currently fourth in the Big South with 59 strikeouts this season. Evans is also tied for fourth on the program s career wins list with 23. The senior, who has a career record of 23-10, is tied with Kevin Napier ( ) for fourth on the alltime list. The left-hander needs one more win to move into second on the school s career victory list with Tim Harrell ( ) and David Harris ( ). Liberty standout Lee Guetterman ( ) won 29 games during his career to top the Liberty all-time wins list. In addition, the senior has moved into the Liberty career innings pitched list s Top 10 with 292 1/3 innings. Evans begins the weekend in fi fth place on the program s all-time list. Doug Bream Receives National, Conference Honors The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) named Liberty senior outfi elder Doug Bream and Clemson junior shortstop Brad Miller National Co-Hitters of the Week, April 12. The Flames outfi elder was also selected to the College Baseball Foundation s National All-Star Line-Up, as well as being named the Southeast Regional Player of the Week by CollegeBaseballInsider.com and the Big South Player of the Week for games played through April 10. During the week, Bream batted.737 (14-19) with six runs scored, eight RBIs, two doubles, one triple and two walks in four games. The senior had four or more hits in three of the games, including a 5-5 day in a midweek contest with James Madison on April 6. After picking up a hit and RBI at High Point on April 8, Bream had four hits in each of Liberty s weekend wins over the Panthers. Beakler s Effort Highlights Wins Against UNO This past weekend, Liberty took two games from the New Orleans Privateers at Worthington Stadium during the Liberty Tournament. The Flames won Saturday afternoon, 3-2, and Sunday afternoon, 5-2. Right-hander Dane Beakler s effort was the key to Liberty s win on Saturday. Making his fi rst start since May 16, 2006, Beakler recorded the fi rst complete game of his career. The senior right-hander allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits over the full nine innings. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter. After New Orleans tied the game in the fi fth inning, the right-hander did not allow a runner to reach base, retiring the last 14 batters to face him in the contest. First baseman Austin Taylor hit his fi fth home run of the year to break a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning in the 3-2 win. Sunday, left fi elder Ryan Cordell and third baseman Zach Haley each had three hits, leading the Liberty Flames to a 5-2 victory. Cordell had three hits in a game for the fi rst time as a collegian. The left fi elder went 3-for-3 in the contest, scoring twice. Haley matched his teammate by going 3-for-3 and plating two runs. Blake Forslund recorded his fi rst victory with four scoreless innings, while reliever Jacob Kemmerer followed with four scoreless frames in the victory. Williams Pushes Flames Past Le Moyne Shortstop Matt Williams hit a home run leading off the 12th inning to propel the Liberty Flames past the Le Moyne Dolphins, 3-2, this past Friday night in the second game of the Liberty Tournament at Worthington Stadium. With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 12th inning, Williams belted the fi rst offering from Dolphin pitcher Ed Kohout over the left fi eld wall for the 3-2 victory. The home run was the shortstop s team-leading fi fth of the year. Liberty starter Steven Evans did not fi gure in the decision. However, he moved into second place in the school s strikeout list with eight strikeouts in the game. The lefthander has 244 career strikeouts. The win enabled the Flames to take the fi rst two games of a three-game Big South series with the Keydets. Liberty hit fi ve home runs in the contest, the most by the Flames this season. Liberty had previously hit three round trippers in a game in a 7-1 win over Presbyterian College in the fi rst game of a doubleheader on April 17. Trailing 6-5, the Flames plated three runs in the top of the ninth to take an 8-6 lead. With one out, catcher Jeff Jefferson belted his second home run of the game and fourth of the year to left fi eld, tying the contest at 6-6. Second baseman Zach Haley followed with a home run inside the left fi eld foul pole, putting Liberty on top for the second time in the game, 7-6. Right fi elder Michael Robertson singled to right fi eld to plate center fi elder Ian Parmley, who had reached on a double, for an 8-6 advantage. The win was Liberty s seventh consecutive victory in Big South play. Locked in a pitcher s duel on Friday night, Robertson beat out a two-out, infi eld single to score the go-ahead run as the Flames defeated the VMI Keydets, 3-2, in the opening contest of the series. Tied at 2-2, Liberty pushed across a run to break the deadlock in the top of the eighth inning. With two outs and runners on second and third, Robertson beat out a chopper behind the mound for an infield single, to score a run for a 3-2 edge. Baker held VMI in check in both the eighth and ninth innings to close out the Liberty victory. Liberty Sweeps PC The Liberty Flames jumped out to a 5-1 lead through the fi rst three innings of game two and never looked back, defeating the Presbyterian College Blue Hose, 5-2, to complete a sweep of a doubleheader, April 17 at Worthington Stadium and the three-game Big South series between the two teams. In the game two of the twinbill, Liberty totaled 13 hits. Matt Williams, Doug Bream, Austin Taylor, Justin Richardson and Jeff Jefferson had two hits apiece for the Flames. Pitcher Keegan Linza moved to 6-2 on the year, yielding two runs, both unearned, on seven hits over the fi rst 5 1/3 innings. Garrett Baker earned his second save of the season. In game one, Richardson belted a career-high two home runs and Bream added another round tripper, powering the Flames past the Blue Hose, 7-1. The Flames scored seven runs on seven hits and an error to erase the host team s edge. Liberty had 19 hits in the game. For the second consecutive day, outfi elder Doug Bream had four hits to lead all players in the contest. The Liberty left fi elder hit.643 during the three-game series against the Panthers. He allowed only two High Point runners to move into scoring position throughout his time on the mound, before giving way to relief pitcher Jacob Kemmerer. Breams Big at VCU Liberty third baseman Tyler Bream hit a two-run home run and drove in three runs and left fi elder Doug Bream had three RBIs in an 11-1 Flames victory over the VCU Rams, March 29 at the Diamond in Richmond, Va. Tyler Bream hit a two-run home run in the fi fth inning, with Doug aboard to give the Flames a 6-1 advantage. It was one of two hits the third baseman had on the day. Doug Bream also had two hits in the game. Catcher Cody Rasmus had three hits and scored three runs for Liberty, which had 12 hits in the game. Flames Take Series with Season-High in Runs Shortstop Matt Williams drove in fi ve runs with four hits, including one a home run, as the Liberty Flames cranked out a season-high for runs in a 16-7 victory over the Winthrop Eagles in the fi nal game of a three-game Big South series, this March 26 at Worthington Stadium. The win allowed the Flames to take the three-game series, two games to one, and start the season 5-1 in the Big South. Complete Games Highlight Sweep Each of Liberty s starting pitchers of its three-game Big South series pitched a complete game, keying a sweep of the Charleston Southern Buccaneers in the fi rst conference series of the year, March After allowing a combined four runs the previous week at the Keith LeClair Classic, Liberty starters, Keegan Linza, John Niggli and Steven Evans once again turned the trick, holding the Buccaneers to four runs over the entire three-game series. Linza got things started, Friday. The senior right-hander outdueled his Charleston Southern counterpart, going the distance in his second consecutive outing in a 2-1 win. Linza allowed one run on eight hits, striking out a career-high 10 to run his record to 4-0 on the year. Niggli followed-up with a gem of his own on Saturday afternoon. The junior right-hander threw his fi rst complete game in a Liberty uniform in a 5-1 victory. Niggli gave up one run on fi ve hits, striking out four. From the third inning on, the junior dominated, not allowing a Charleston Southern hit until a two-out infi eld single in the ninth inning. During the stretch, the Liberty right-hander allowed only two runners to reach, on a walk in the fi fth and another walk in the sixth inning. On Sunday, Evans made it three consecutive complete games, pitching his fi rst of the season and the fi fth of his career in a 5-2 victory over the Buccaneers. He allowed two runs on six hits, fanning 12 to set a new career-high and walked one. Baker Comes Up Big at Maryland A strong relief appearance by Garrett Baker and seven extra base hits propelled the Liberty Flames past the Maryland Terrapins, 11-4, March 15 at Smith Stadium in College Park, Md. Baker entered the contest with the bases loaded, no one out and one run already in for Maryland in the fi rst inning and quickly restored order in the contest. The junior allowed only an unearned run, scattering three hits over eight effective innings. The left-hander struck out fi ve and walked none, running his record to 2-0. He retired seven consecutive batters from the second through the fourth inning and later, fi nished his outing by setting down 12 Terrapins in order. Despite trailing 3-0 after one inning, the Flames answered with four runs in the third inning to take a lead they never relinquished. In the frame, second baseman Zack Haley and fi rst baseman Jeff Jefferson hit solo home runs. For Haley, it was his fi rst of the season, while Jefferson s round tripper was his second on the year. Haley led all players in the contest with three hits, including two extra base hits. One of left fi elder Doug Bream s two hits in the game was a bases-clearing double. Pitchers Lead the Way at LeClair Classic Liberty captured the 2011 Keith LeClair Classic in Greenville, N.C., March with a 3-0 record. Keying the title run were the efforts of Flames starting pitchers Keegan Linza, John Niggli and Steven Evans. Linza got things started on March 11, fi ring the fi rst complete game of the season by a Liberty starting pitcher in a 5-2 victory over Rutgers. The senior right-hander allowed two runs on seven hits, striking out fi ve and not walking a Scarlet Knight batter. Linza retired the fi rst 10 Scarlet Knight batters to face him in the contest and did not allow a runner past second base until the seventh inning, when Rutgers scored its fi rst run of the contest. With the win, he runs his record to 3-0 on the year. The following day, right-hander John Niggli pitched seven strong innings to pick up his second victory of the year in a 4-3 win over Monmouth. The junior gave up two runs on six hits, striking out one and walking none over the fi rst seven innings, before being relieved by Garrett Baker. 12 the fi nal out of the contest to earn his fi rst save of the year. Left-hander Steven Evans capped the weekend by handcuffi ng the host East Carolina Pirates in a 2-0 victory, March 13. The senior left-hander held the Pirate hitters in check during his outing, scattering four hits over 7 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up his fi rst victory of The left-hander struck out a season-high nine batters and walked three, running his record to 1-3 on the season. He retired the last eight batters he faced, before giving way to reliever Dane Beakler with one out. Beakler completed the shutout with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, as Liberty claimed the title. Flames Belt 20 in Game as Bats Come Alive vs. Binghamton In its home opener on March 4, Liberty pounded out 20 hits, a season-high in a 12-2 win over the Bearcats in the fi rst game of the year at Worthington Stadium. The last time the Flames had 20 or more hits in a single game since Liberty belted 21 hits in a 16-9, 10-inning victory at Presbyterian College on April 25, The Flames hit.396 as team during the three-game series with Binghamton and averaged 9.3 runs per game. Leading the way during the series was catcher Casey Rasmus, who hit.545 and tied for the team-high in hits with six. The junior ripped his fi rst home run of the season and scored four times during the three-game series. Third baseman Tyler Bream and shortstop Matt Williams also had six hits during the weekend series. Williams hit his fi rst round tripper of the year and had a double and triple among his hits. In addition, infi elders Austin Taylor and Justin Sizemore helped power the Liberty offense with big offensive weekends. Five or More RBIs in a Game - Shortstop Matt Williams drove in fi ve runs with four hits in a 16-7 Liberty win over the Winthrop Eagles, March 26 at Worthington Stadium. Cycle - Third baseman Chad Miller hit for the cycle in his fi rst four at bats as the Flames downed the Longwood Lancers, 8-0, April 18, 2006 in a non-conference contest at Worthington Stadium. Bowman had two hits, a three-run home run and a two-run single. He also brought in a run with a squeeze bunt in the contest. Grand Slam Home Run - With two away in the eighth inning, VMI second baseman Jacob Morely lined his fi rst home run of the year, a grand slam, over the center fi eld fence to give the Keydets a 6-5 lead in game one of a doubleheader April 23 at Gray- Mnor Stadium in Lexington, Va. Liberty rallied with three runs in the ninth inning for an 8-6 win. No-Hitter - UNC Asheville s Jason Walker pitched a seven-inning no-hitter against the Flames on April 29, 2000, at Greenwood Field in Asheville, N.C. Walker allowed two walks and struck out four, leading the Bulldogs to a 3-0 win. The game marked the only shutout against the Flames on the season and the fi rst no-hitter thrown against Liberty since Shutout - North Florida pitchers Casey Medlen and Tyler Moore combined to hold Liberty to three hits, to shut out the Flames, 5-0, Feb. 25 in the opening game of a four-game series between the two teams at Harmon Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. Medlen, the starter, allowed two hits, striking out seven and walking one in the win. Triple Play - Leading 6-4 with a runner on fi rst and second to open the fourth inning, Patrick Gaillard hit a line drive which High Point second baseman Dustin Hoffman caught.
