After tonight, the series will shift to Modesto for games on Sunday and Monday. Jordan Johnson (3-2, 2.10) is slated to make the start on the mound for the Giants today. Winning Ways Despite last night s loss, the Giants enter this evening s contest having won nine out of their last 11 games. San Jose needs a victory tonight to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time since dropping three straight from April 29-May Game Road Trip Looms Following tonight s game, San Jose embarks on a season-high 14-game road trip that will begin tomorrow afternoon. The road trip includes two games in Modesto, three games at Stockton, four games in Rancho Cucamonga, three games at Visalia and then two games back in Modesto. San Jose has only eight home games in May. After today, the Giants don t have another home game until LAST GAME May R H E Modesto San Jose WP: Howard (2-1) LP: Snelten (1-3) S: Cozart (1) A squeeze bunt play gave the Nuts the lead in the top of the seventh inning before Modesto scored two more runs in the eighth en route to a 5-2 series-opening victory over the Giants last night at Municipal Stadium. San Jose was held to four hits and struck out 12 times in the loss. The Nuts Wes Rogers delivered the RBI sacrifice bunt in the seventh that broke the 2-2 tie before Luis Jean s two-run single an inning later. Modesto starter Sam Howard struck out 10 and allowed just two runs over seven innings to pick-up the win. Jonah Arenado (2-for-4, 2B, HR, RBI) doubled and homered to lead the Giants offensively. San Jose did not record a hit after the fourth inning. D.J. Snelten (7 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 4 SO) suffered the loss. May 29. San Jose has won a season-high seven consecutive road games having swept their last two series away from home (four games at Stockton from May 2-5 and three games at Bakersfield from May 10-12). Starting Strong Giants starting pitchers own a sparkling 2.24 ERA (17 ER/68.1 IP) over the last 11 games. San Jose starters have pitched at least six innings in nine out of the 11 games. Two Giants starters rank among the top five in the league in ERA: Sam Coonrod (3rd, 1.32) and Jordan Johnson (5th, 2.10). Hinojosa Hits Despite an 0-for-4 last night, shortstop C.J Hinojosa is currently second in the California League with a.360 batting average this season. Yesterday was just the second time in 30 games this year that Hinojosa did not reach base safely. Hinojosa s.454 on-base percentage this season leads the league. In May After posting a record in April, the Giants have gone 9-3 thus far in May the best record in the California League this month. San Jose boasts a 2.78 team ERA in May second-lowest in the league (Lake Elsinore 2.38). Who Needs A Day Off? The Giants are currently in the midst of a stretch of 29 consecutive days with a game (May 10- June 7). San Jose s only off day between now and the All-Star break is on Wednesday, June 8. At Muni The Giants are 9-6 at home this season. San Jose has lost their last two home games after winning six straight at Municipal Stadium. The Giants have yet to lose three straight home games this year. Arenado Against The Nuts After doubling and homering last night, infielder Jonah Arenado is now batting.529 (9-for-17) with three home runs and six RBI s in four games against Modesto this season. Limiting Walks The Giants pitching staff has issued the fewest number of walks in the California League this season ( per game). By comparison, San Jose s staff is last in the league in strikeouts ( per game).
