Key: * - WAC Game; # - Aggie Stampede; % - Stanford Nike Invitational; ^ - Gaucho Classic; $ - San Diego Classic; ~ - Wolf Pack Softball Classic Nevada Wolf Pack Softball Week Seven: Wolf Pack plays five games in the Beehive State THIS WEEK Coming off a 1-2 WAC opening weekend against Fresno State and a split on Thursday in a non-conference doubleheader against Weber State, the Nevada softball returns to WAC play with a a three-game set at Utah State beginning Friday. The Wolf Pack and Aggies will play twice on Friday and once on Saturday. After that, Nevada will return home for next week s WAC series against San Jose State at Hixson Park RECAP Nevada Splits With Weber State OGDEN, Utah A five-run third propelled Nevada to a 7-1 win in game two of a doubleheader with Weber State Thursday, giving the Wolf Pack a split of the day s action in Ogden. Nevada dropped game one 5-3. Nevada moved to with the split, while Weber State moved to In game two, Nevada got a complete game from Bailey Brewer on top of its fourth inning, as she struck out eight for her first-career win. She gave up seven hits and one earned run without issuing a walk. The third included an RBI-triple from Lauren Lastrapes, her second extra-base hit of the game. She also doubled in the first and finished game two 2-4 with two RBI. In total, the Pack scored five times on four hits and an error in the inning. Sam Puzey drove in two runs, including a solo home run in the seventh inning to dead center. Megan Fincher also drove in two runs on one hit. The Wolf Pack scored the first three runs of game one, only to see the Wildcats score five times in the fourth to take the lead. PARSONS LEADS WAC IN DOUBLES Entering this weekend's series at Utah State, Nevada sophomore Sara Parsons is tied for the WAC lead in double in 2012 with 10. Parsons is tied with Amanda Krueger for the conference lead and they are one clear of BYU's Delaney Willard. In 20 at-bats as a freshman, Parsons did not have a double. DEFENSIVELY SPEAKING Nevada's fielding percentage is six points higher this year and the Wolf Pack has improved defensively around the field. The move of Karley Hopkins to shortstop has paid immediate dividends as Hopkins leads the WAC with 88 assists (which leads the WAC) and has only made three errors on the season. The insertion of Ashley Butera behind the plate has also helped. Butera is tied for the WAC lead with nine would-be basestealers thrown out. As a team, Nevada has just five passed balls this year after 19 in MORE IN STATS Karley Hopkins is third in the WAC in hits this year with 38 while Lauren Lastrapes is fifth with Lauren Lastrapes ranks fifth in the WAC in total bases with Nevada is third in the WAC in hits with 238 on the season... 2 Nevada Media Services - Legacy Hall/MS Reno, NV Fax: HOME SWEET HOME After playing its first 20 games on the road, Nevada has played its 11 straight games at home at Hixson Park before this week s trip to the Beehive State. Nevada s bats enjoyed the home stretch. The Wolf Pack entered it first home game in the first week of March with a team batting average of.248. After eight games at home, Nevada has seen its average rise to.264 on the year as the Pack has hit.395 as a team at home. Nevada has 27 extra-base hits in 11 home games. Karley Hopkins (.447) and Lauren Lastrapes (.368) have especially enjoyed the friendly confines and are two of five Nevada players who are hitting better than.300 at home. BUTERA NAMED WAC HITTER OF THE WEEK (March 5) DENVER Nevada s Ashley Butera and Hawai i s Stephanie Ricketts have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for Feb. 27-March 4.
