LAYERS THORNTON STERLING BAYLOR LETTERMAN Marion Thornton Sterling, Baylor University s oldest living letterwinner, passed away in late November, 2008, at Waco s Providence Hospital. Sterling, 95, lettered for Baylor s baseball team during the 1934, 1935 and 1936 seasons. A native of Waco, Texas, Sterling is survived by his younger brother, Dawson, with whom he established the Sterling Brothers Endowed Athletic Scholarship Fund at Baylor in In 1994, at age 81, Sterling married the former Janette Greene, with whom he had been friends since 1942; she passed away earlier in the 2008 calendar year. Sterling graduated from Waco High School in 1930 and received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in finance from Baylor in He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and was commissioned as an ensign; he left active service in Sterling lived in Washington, D.C., from 1942 to 1974; he retired from the U.S. Navy Reserves as a lieutenant commander after 20 years of service. He then spent 26 years as a tax accountant for the Internal Revenue Service. Sterling remained an avid supporter of Baylor Athletics throughout his life, traveling by bus to Baylor sporting events throughout the country as recently as For 32 years, he traveled and slept on Greyhound buses with unlimited 60-day passes. In that time, he traveled to 48 states and saw Baylor athletic events in 40 states. Sterling also attended Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City (1968), Montreal (1972), Munich (1976), Los Angeles (1984), Barcelona (1992) and Atlanta (1996). In 2003, Sterling s streak of 232 consecutive Baylor football games attended ended when he missed the Bears game against Texas State due to a bout with pneumonia. It was the first Baylor football game he had missed since the Bears 1976 game at Rice, which he missed due to a severe ice storm in Central Texas. Sterling was a member of First Baptist Church of Waco; he previously was a member of First Baptist Church of Washington and served as a deacon at both churches. Baylor baseball s booster club, the Heart of the Order, annually awards the Thornton Sterling Player of the Year Award. The organization has presented the award since 2003 to the player who shows the best consistent performance and effort on the field and is an outstanding representative for the baseball team. 35 2008 SUMMER REVIEW USA BASEBALL NATIONAL TEAM Kendal Volz served as closer for the USA Baseball National Team. And when Volz took the mound, the game was over. Volz was perfect in save opportunities, going 8-for-8, and solidified the back end of a bullpen that was simply dominant. Team USA finished its summer tour 24-0 with gold medals at Haarlem Baseball Week in the Netherlands and the FISU World University Baseball Championships in the Czech Republic. Volz recorded saves in both gold medal games, including Team USA s 4-1 victory over the Cuba Olympic Team at Haarlem. It was the team s second victory of the week over the Cubans; Volz earned the save in the first win, as well, a 1-0 Team USA triumph in which Volz struck out the game s final two batters with runners at second and third. In the FISU gold medal game, Volz preserved Team USA s 1-0, 12-inning victory over Japan by getting a strikeout and a groundout with the potential tying run at third. Volz posted a staff-best 0.00 ERA, allowing one unearned run on six hits and five walks with 16 strikeouts over 14.0 innings. The staff as a whole marked a National Team record 0.88 ERA, bettering the 2003 team s 1.29 mark. At the conclusion of the summer tour, Baseball America named Volz the National Team s third-best professional prospect. CAPE COD LEAGUE Shaver Hansen and Willie Kempf led the Harwich Mariners to the team s first Cape Cod League title in 21 years. Hansen, who started the summer at the USA Baseball National Team Trials, hit.273 with a home run, 19 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 16 attempts. Kempf was 2-2 with a 2.97 ERA and two saves; he also earned the victory in relief in the title game. Raynor Campbell (Wareham Gatemen) became the sixth Baylor player to earn All-Cape Cod League honors, joining Jaime Bubela (1999), Zane Carlson (2002, 2003), Nick Cassavechia (2007), David Murphy (2002) and Trey Webb (2002). Campbell ranked 11th in the league with a.303 batting average and participated in the Cape Cod League All-Star Game. Craig Fritsch and Shawn Tolleson played for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. Fritsch, who also was named to the league s All-Star Game, was 2-3 with a 3.43 ERA and a.185 opponents batting average. Tolleson, who was 1-2 with a 3.41 ERA and 53 strikeouts against 12 walks, was fourth in the league in strikeouts and led the league with strikeouts per nine innings. Baseball America ranked Tolleson and Fritsch the league s 15thand 18th-best professional prospects, respectively. Gregg Glime and Aaron Miller both played for the Chatham A s. NORTHWOODS LEAGUE Brooks Pinckard (Eau Claire Express) was named to the league s all-star game, hitting.298 with two home runs, 29 RBI, 11 doubles, three triples and 22 stolen bases in 28 attempts. He ranked sixth in the league in stolen bases, 10th in hits (64) and eighth in runs scored (40). Pinckard also posted a 2.08 ERA and a.234 opponents batting average with two saves on the mound. Three Bears participated in the league s postseason: Don Lambert (Madison Mallards), Chris Slater (Wisconsin Woodchucks) and Reed Woytek (Madison Mallards). Lamber and Woytek reached the league s championship series, but the Mallards lost to Thunder Bay.
