After suffering a pair of tightly-contested losses at the hands of St. Thomas on Tuesday afternoon in St. Paul, the Gusties will return home on Wednesday, April 9th for their first home series of the season when they host Augsburg College in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. On Saturday, April 12th Gustavus will take on the Cardinals of Saint Mary s University at 1:00 p.m. on the Gustie Baseball Field. To cap off a full week of action, the Gusties will travel to St. Paul on Sunday, April 13th to face Hamline University in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. SERIES HISTORY Wednesday afternoon s games will be the 155th and 156th meetings between Gustavus and Augsburg College in baseball. Gustavus holds the advantage in the all-time series with a record of The Gusties were swept by Augsburg last season in a series held at CSP Barnes Field in St. Paul. The Black and Gold lost by scores of 3-1 and 7-0 to cap the 2013 season. Saturday s game against Saint Mary s University marks the 145th and 146th times the two baseball teams have faced each other. The Cardinals have the uppder hand in the all-time series with a record of The two squads split last season s doubleheader in Winona. Saint Mary s won game one 3-0, but Gustavus bounced back with a 5-3 victory in game two. The Gusties will face Hamline for the 152nd and 153rd times on Sunday at Midway Stadium. 2 a record of Last season, the Gusties swept the Pipers in a home series at the Gustie Baseball Field, winning game one 3-1 and game two NEWS AND NOTES GUSTIES RETURN FROM THE GRAND CANYON STATE - The baseball team spent March 20th-24th in Tucson, Arizona, competing in the Tucson Invitational. After weeks of postponements, cancellations, and the typical inclement Minnesota spring weather, the Gusties kicked off their MIAC schedule on Tuesday with a doubleheader against defending MIAC Champion St. Thomas. The Gusties played eight games throughout the course of their spring training trip to Arizona, going 3-5 overall. HOME OPENER - The Gustavus baseball team will dig into the turf of the Gustie Baseball Field for the first time this season on Wednesday, April 9 when it begins its home schedule with doubleheader against Augsburg beginning at 2:30 p.m. The Gusties will then play host to Saint Mary s University in a twin bill taking place at 1:00 p.m. Gustavus has eight home doubleheaders on its schedule this season including an eight-game home-stand from April 24-May 3. The Gusties went 6-4 last season at the Gustie Baseball Field, and swept Carleton in the home-opening series held on April 8. LOOKING FOR A WIN - The Gusties have matching records in their series against Augsburg College and Saint Mary s University over the past four years. The Gusties, who are 3-5 against both teams since 2010, will look for their luck to change this week as the MIAC season gets underway. The Gusties will look for redemption on Wednesday against Augsburg after the Auggies knocked them out of playoff contention last season with a season-capping sweep in St. Paul. BY THE NUMBERS 3 - The number of earned runs Grant Soderberg has allowed in 13 innings of work this season. After allowing just one run on seven hits in six innings against the Tommies on Tuesday, Sodberg dropped his team-best ERA to The number of runs the Gustavus baseball team scored in their victory over Wesleyan University in the Tucson Invitational on March 21st. It was the first time the Gusties scored more than 20 runs in a game in over 20 years The team-leading batting average of Taylor Bigandt. Bigandt went a combined 3-for-6 with two runs and a triple in Gustavus s series against St. Thomas on Tuesday. 3 Head Coach Mike Carroll 18th Season in the MIAC Overall Office: Mike Carroll is entering his 18th season as the head baseball coach at Gustavus. Last season, Carroll directed the squad to a seventh place conference finish with a league record of Carroll s squad ended the year with an overall record of In his 17 seasons at Gustavus, Carroll has skippered the team to a mark of overall and in the MIAC. Coach Carroll has recorded the most victories of any coach in the history of the program. He was named the MIAC Coach-of-the-Year in 2002 when the Gusties finished the conference schedule with 15 wins, which was the highest total since Gustavus has finished in the upper half of the MIAC standings in 12 of the past 17 seasons. While at the helm, Carroll has coached 23 separate players who have garnered 38 All-Conference honors, three MIAC Players of the Year, two Academic All-Americans, and two All-Americans. Carroll, an Edina, Minnesota native, competed in hockey and baseball at Mankato State University. After graduating with a degree in municipal recreation in 1982, Carroll played professional baseball in the Montreal Expos organization for two years. In addition to coaching baseball at Gustavus, Carroll is the head women s hockey coach for the Gusties. Mike and his wife, Terri, have two sons, Matt and Mike, and live in Mankato.
