Winning The goal of college baseball coaches and players is to make it to the College World Series in Omaha, and the OSU coaching staff has plenty of experience in that regard. The Cowboys staff of Josh Holliday, Rob Walton and Marty Lees has combined to make 12 CWS appearances as either a player or coach. Holliday played on a pair of CWS teams at OSU (1996 & 1999) and has coached in the CWS as an assistant at Georgia Tech (2006), Arizona State (2009) and Vanderbilt (2011). Walton spent four seasons as a pitcher at OSU from , and each of those Cowboy teams appeared in the CWS. As an assistant coach at Oregon State, Lees helped lead the Beavers to Omaha three-straight years from , with two of those trips resulting in national championships (2006 & 2007). R-E-S-P-E-C-T In January, despite his having not yet coached a game, Baseball America named OSU s Josh Holliday the nation s top college head coach under the age of 40. The top 10 list was compiled based on the voting of coaches and scouts. In addition, Marty Lees came in at No. 6 on Baseball America s list of the nation s top 10 college assistant coaches. That list was compiled from the votes of 70 Division I head coaches across the country, as well as the input of more than a dozen scouts. Coaches with prior D-I head coaching experience, such as OSU pitching coach Rob Walton, were excluded from the list. Baseball In Their Blood Baseball and Oklahoma State is definitely a family affair for Josh Holliday. Josh s father, Tom, served as an OSU assistant coach for 19 years then took over as the Cowboys head coach from , leading the program to its last College World Series appearance in Tom is currently in his seventh season as the associate head coach at North Carolina State Josh s younger brother, Matt, is an outfielder for the St. Louis Cardinals. In nine major league seasons, Matt has been named to six All-Star teams. Josh s uncle, Dave Holliday, was an OSU assistant coach from and has since held a variety of roles in Major League Baseball, including his current spot as a professional scout for the Atlanta Braves. Dave s son, Heath, is a senior catcher for the Cowboys this season. New Faces Along with the new coaching staff, OSU s 34-man 2013 roster includes 15 newcomers eight junior college transfers, six high school players and an NAIA transfer. The group includes JUCO stars Tanner Krietemeier and Nick Dolsky, who both began their careers at Nebraska, as well as Brendan McCurry and Kyle Gehrs. All four are expected to be immediate contributors in their first seasons in Stillwater. The freshman class includes Donnie Walton, a 36th-round pick in last year s MLB Draft who has started 26 games on the infield, as well as key contributors Alex Hackerott and Corey Hassel. Home Sweet Home Allie P. Reynolds Stadium has been home to Oklahoma State baseball since 1981, and in those 32 seasons the Cowboys have been nearly unbeatable on their home field. OSU is (.816) all time at Reynolds Stadium and has lost more than two consecutive games on their home turf only four times (six in a row in 2007; three straight in 2010, 2012 and 2013). The Cowboys are 19-5 at home in Grab A Snickers After opening the season at New Mexico, the Cowboys didn t go anywhere for a while. On Feb. 19, OSU opened a 26-game homestand which finished at 24 after two cancellations at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium, and the Cowboys did not return to the road until the April 5 contest at Kansas. In April and May, OSU will play just seven games on its home field. 2 Cowboy baseball 13

3 Josh Holliday Head Coach, First Season Josh Holliday returned home to take over the Oklahoma State baseball program when he was named the 15th head coach in program history on June 8, The 35-year old Oklahoma State alumnus and native of Stillwater served the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt and established himself as one of the nation s top assistant coaches over the last decade. Holliday is the first former OSU player to serve as the program s head coach. A four-year letterwinner for the Cowboys from , Holliday was a starter on Cowboy teams that made four NCAA Tournament appearances and reached the College World Series in 1996 and For the last 11 years, Holliday served as an assistant coach at some of the nation s top baseball programs. He started his coaching career at OSU before serving on the staffs at North Carolina State, Georgia Tech, Arizona State and Vanderbilt. He coached on seven NCAA Tournament teams and three of those advanced to the College World Series (Georgia Tech in 2006, Arizona State in 2009 and Vanderbilt in 2011). A four-year letterwinner who played in 256 games, which ranks second all time at OSU, Holliday compiled a career.311 batting average to go along with 53 home runs, 62 doubles and 237 RBIs. He was inducted into the OSU Baseball Hall of Fame in Holliday s name is prominent throughout the OSU record book. He is OSU s all-time leader in base on balls with 225 and ranks in the top five on the Cowboys career lists in games, at bats, runs, hits, doubles, total bases, RBIs and hit by pitches. He also ranks seventh all-time in homers. Holliday was a three-time All-Big 12 performer, earning first-team honors in 1998 (at catcher) and 1999 (at third base). He was a second-team selection as a utility player in 1997 and was named the Big Eight Conference Freshman of the Year and a Freshman All-American in The Josh Holliday File : Played at Oklahoma State : Played in Toronto Blue Jays organization : Oklahoma State assistant coach 2004: North Carolina State assistant coach : Georgia Tech assistant coach : Arizona State assistant coach : Vanderbilt assistant coach I Feel A Draft The Cowboys have six players on their 2013 roster who have been Major League Baseball Draft picks. OSU Major League Baseball Draft Picks Year Team Round Zach Fish 2011 Texas 24 Jarrett Higgins 2009 Colorado 36 Heath Holliday 2009 Colorado 45 Jason Hursh 2010 Pittsburgh 6 Tyler Nurdin 2011 Cleveland 28 Donnie Walton 2012 New York Mets 36 Comeback Cowboys & A Little Bit Of Irony In the second game of the New Mexico series, OSU faced an eight-run deficit after seven innings. Trailing 14-6, the Cowboys rallied for four runs in the eighth and ninth to force extra innings and then won the game with a run in the 13th. The eight-run deficit marked the largest OSU had overcome to win a game since April 6, 1997, when the Cowboys trailed Texas, 11-0, after 4 1/2 innings in Stillwater before rallying for, ironically, a win. Josh Holliday was also a part of that game, playing catcher and third base for the Cowboys and going 1-for-4. Coming from behind has continued to be a trend for the Cowboys nine of OSU s wins this season have come in games in which it has trailed. It s A Walk Off The Cowboys have picked up three walk-off wins this season, all coming within the same week. Two of the victories came in the 10th inning. The first came against Missouri State when Randy McCurry drew a bases-loaded walk in the 10th to bring home the winning run. In its series win over Loyola Marymount, OSU had two walk-off wins. In the opener, Tanner Krietemeier delivered a 10th-inning, walk-off home run, and in the series finale, it was a single by Zach Fish that plated the deciding run with two outs in the ninth. Two-Way Talent Randy McCurry has proven to be valuable with his arm and his bat during his time in Stillwater and earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors as a utility player a year ago. Now a fifth-year senior, McCurry is continuing that trend in Used mostly as a reliever during his career, McCurry s 68 appearances are tied for seventh on OSU s alltime list, and he is 12-9 with 12 saves and a 2.79 ERA, with his 12 saves ranking fourth in program history. Offensively, McCurry sports career numbers of five home runs and 45 RBIs to go along with a.280 batting average in 75 games. McCurry is three years removed from Tommy John surgery after he suffered a season-ending elbow injury in OSU s 2010 season opener. As a freshman in 2009, he tied OSU s single-season record with 10 saves. Back On The Bump Two years ago, Jason Hursh was a highly touted freshman for the Cowboys, coming to Stillwater after a standout prep career that culminated with him being a sixth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft. In his first collegiate season, the hard-throwing right-hander made 10 appearances, including four starts, and was 1-1 with a 2.73 ERA. But the native Texan was forced to miss the 2012 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Following the successful procedure, Hursh is back for his redshirt sophomore season in 2013 and proving to be one of the aces of the Cowboys staff. With a fastball in the mid- to upper 90s in his repertoire, Hursh is listed by Baseball America as fourth-best prospect in the Big 12 for the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft and came in at No. 22 on MLB.com s list of top draft prospects for this June s draft. In eight starts this season, Hursh is 3-2 with a 2.63 ERA and two complete games, and he has 42 strikeouts in 54.2 innings. During a four-game stretch earlier this season, he tossed 17.2 scoreless innings. Aluminum Assault OSU ranks second in the Big 12 Conference with a.302 team batting average, and the Cowboys offense tops the league with 69 doubles while also ranking second in runs (204), home runs (19), RBIs (181), walks (130), on-base percentage (.391), slugging percentage (.433) and sacrifice hits (37). Additionally, seven regulars in the OSU lineup are hitting.302 or better. He s Heating Up Saulyer Saxon leads OSU with a.409 batting average (9-for-22) in Big 12 play and is 9-for-19 (.474) with four RBI over the Cowboys last six games, during which he has served primarily as the DH and leadoff hitter. Victor Romero is also swinging a hot bat of late. Over the last seven games, the senior catcher is 12-for- 24 with four multi-hit efforts, which has raised his batting average 54 points to.327. He has also reached base safely in 16-straight games entering the weekend. Cowboy Baseball 13 3

4 Cowboy Baseball By The Numbers 100 Career home runs hit by Cowboy Pete Incaviglia, an NCAA record 61 OSU s record for wins in a season, set in 1984 & Consecutive game hitting streak for Robin Ventura in 1987, an NCAA record 48 & 143 Number of home runs & RBIs for Pete Incaviglia during the 1985 season, both NCAA records 38 NCAA Tournament berths for OSU baseball, the fourth-highest total all time 32 Cowboys have been named first-team All-American 30 Conference championships for the Cowboys (24 Big Eight, 5 Missouri Valley, 1 Big 12) 27 Number of Cowboys to earn All-Big 12 First Team honors 24 Big Eight Conference championships, a record 19 College World Series appearances by the Cowboys, which ranks sixth all time 18 Cowboys drafted in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft 16 OSU won an NCAA record 16-straight Big Eight Conference championships from Top 10 finishes in Baseball America final season polls (since 1981) 10 NCAA team and individual records held by OSU 10 OSU has had 10 players named to a USA Baseball National Team roster 7 50 win seasons by the Cowboys 6 Berths in the College World Series championship game 3 Cowboys in the National College Baseball Hall of Fame Robin Ventura, Pete Incaviglia & Gary Ward 2 NCAA Super Regional appearances by the Cowboys 1999 & National championship for OSU, which came in Golden Spikes Award winner Robin Ventura in 1988 Dynamic Duo A big reason for the Cowboys huge offensive numbers is the production of a two-headed monster in the middle of the lineup in the form of Tanner Krietemeier and Zach Fish. Krietemeier s.369 batting average leads the Cowboys and ranks eighth in the Big 12, and the junior first baseman also ranks among the top 10 in the conference in hits (45), runs (25), homers (3), RBIs (29), total bases (64) and slugging percentage (.525). Fish, a sophomore, is hitting.315 and ranks in the top 10 in the Big 12 in runs (26), home runs (5), doubles (12), RBIs (28), total bases (68) and slugging percentage (.548). Want more superlatives from this duo? Krietemeier has hit safely in 28 of OSU s 31 games this season. Krietemeier had an 18-game hitting streak snapped in the second game of the Texas series. The streak was the longest by an OSU player since 2008 (Rebel Ridling, 20). During the streak, he hit.361 (26-for-72) with three homers, five doubles, 16 RBIs and a.583 slugging percentage. Krietemeier s 13 multi-hit games are the most by any Cowboy, while Fish s 11 rank second. Krietemeier is hitting.438 (21-for-48) with runners in scoring position. Fish leads the Cowboys with seven multi-rbi games and has collected four RBIs in a game twice. Fish was named the Big 12 Player of the Week (March 18) and NCBWA National Hitter of the Week (March 19) after hitting.600 (12-for-20) with eight RBIs in five games during the week of March Strong-Armed OSU has also been impressive on the mound in 2013, led by veterans Randy McCurry and Vince Wheeland along with newcomers Tyler Nurdin, Brendan McCurry, Alex Hackerott and Kyle Gehrs. OSU sports a 2.94 team ERA, which ranks third in the Big 12, and 10 Cowboy hurlers with at least five appearances have an ERA of 3.58 or lower. Vince Wheeland is 6-0, with his six wins tied for the most in the league and tied for 13th nationally. Wheeland s 2.01 ERA ranks fifth in the league, while Jason Hursh s 2.63 ERA is 10th. During a fivegame stretch earlier this season, Wheeland worked 15.0 innings without allowing a run, while Hursh had a scoreless innings streak of 17.2 over four games. Brendan McCurry is 3-1 with a 0.40 ERA, and his five saves are tied for the fourth most in the Big 12. He has allowed only one earned run in 14 outings (22.2 IP). Hackerott has not allowed a run in 10.1 innings. He is 1-0 with 11 strikeouts in seven appearances. Thievery A year ago, OSU s opponents stole over twice as many bases (77) as the Cowboys (38). Things are quite different in 2013 as the Cowboys have already racked up 44 steals and their opponents just 23. Gage Green leads the Cowboys with nine steals, while Aaron Cornell has swiped seven. The last time OSU topped 100 stolen bases in a season was 1999 (117). Short Hops OSU has been ranked in at least two national polls for six-straight weeks and are as high as No. 22 in this week. The Cowboys peaked at No. 18 in both the USA Today and NCBWA polls on March OSU is hitting.319 with runners in scoring position, while their opponents are at Of OSU s 181 RBIs this season, 66 have come with two outs. Zach Fish leads the Cowboys with 11 two-out RBIs. twitter.com/osubaseball Facebook.com/OSUbaseball twitter.com/osuathletics facebook.com/osuathletics youtube.com/osuathletics facebook.com/big12 twitter.com/big12conference youtube.com/big12conference Coach Holliday Radio Show OSU head coach Josh Holliday discusses all things Cowboy baseball during a weekly radio show throughout the 2013 season.
