LAST TIME OUT: Ryan Weber tossed eight innings in a spot start for the Mississippi Braves while Kyle Kubitza and Seth Loman led the Braves at the plate en route to a 5-1 victory over the Huntsville Stars Wednesday evening at Trustmark Park. The win also secured another series victory for the Braves. Mississippi (9-5, 48-35) scored five runs on nine hits while Huntsville (7-7, 53-31) plated one run on just four hits. Weber (3-2) tossed eight frames, holding the Stars to one earned run on three hits and walk to pick up the win. John Cornely worked the final inning of the night. Kubitza went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and a triple. He drove in three runs and scored once. Loman added two doubles, a walk and two runs scored. The M-Braves took a 1-0 lead in the second when Loman doubled to right and scored on Kubitza s double to right field. Nick Ramirez and Taylor Green reached on back-to-back two-out singles to start the Stars fourth. Josh Prince then delivered a RBI-single to right field, plating Ramirez and tying the game at 1-1. Mississippi responded to take a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Loman walked and Matt Kennelly singled. A wild pitch allowed both runners to advance before Kubitza delivered a two-run triple to center field, making it 3-1. Daniel Castro then singled to drive home Kubitza. Weber reached on a base hit and Jose Peraza grounded into a force out to move Castro to third. Kyle Wren followed with a single to plate Castro. Brent Suter (7-6) worked 4.1 innings for the Stars, giving up five earned runs on eight hits in the loss. He walked three and struck out two. JUNE LEADERS: Among those with significant playing time, Cedric Hunter and Kyle Kubitza led the M-Braves offensively with batting averages of.347 and.341, respectively. On the mound, Aaron Northcraft led the Braves starters with a 3.74 ERA in four starts while Chasen Shreve led relievers with a 2.03 ERA in 10 outings. Mitch Atkins recorded the most strikeouts, 26 K s in 28 innings pitched. Mycal Jones stole a team high eight bases during the month of June. DRIVING IN RUNS: M-Braves first baseman Seth Loman has driven in at least one run in nine consecutive games, June 21-29, breaking a record from the Double-A Braves inaugural season in Mississippi. The M-Braves previous record for most consecutive games with an RBI was originally set at eight games by Jeff Francoeur in HOT START: Infielder Jose Peraza was promoted to Double-A Mississippi from High-A Lynchburg on June 19 to start the second half of the season. In 9 games, Peraza is hitting.425 (17-40) with a double, triple, homer and seven RBI. The second baseman is slugging.575 and has posted multi-hit games in three of the first five games. LEAGUE LEADERS: Cedric Hunter enters this series tied for the third-best batting average in the Southern League,.311. Kyle Kubitza sits eighth with a.304 average. Williams Perez ranks fourth with a 2.66 ERA. Perez ranks third with a 1.10 WHIP. Kyle Kubitza ranks third in OBP (.403) and Hunter ranks fourth in slugging (.526). Seth Loman also ranks fourth in RBI (50). As a team, the M-Braves offense ranks first with a.267 batting average while the pitching staff ranks fourth with a 3.66 ERA. TO THE SHOW: M-Braves closer Shae Simmons was promoted directly to the Atlanta Braves from Double-A Mississippi on May 31. Simmons is the 15th M-Brave to receive a promotion directly to the big leagues from Pearl. The right-hander was leading the Southern League with 14 saves. He had a 0.78 ERA in 20 outings. In those 20 appearances, he gave up runs in just one outing. LAST TIME OUT Did not factor in the decision as Cedric Hunter launched a solo homer in the eighth to break a 4-4 tie and send the M-Braves to a 5-4 victory at Birminghan. Began the season at Triple-A Gwinnett. Went 1-3 with a 4.72 ERA in 11 games (five starts) at Triple-A Gwinnett. Was 1-0 with a 1.54 ERA as a reliever.
