Tyler Chatwood toes the rubber, becoming the first Cubs righthander to handle home opener duties since Edwin Jackson in 2013 southpaw Travis Wood got the start in the 2014 Wrigley Field opener while Jon Lester was the Cubs starter in each of the previous three home openers. This homestand consists of a nine-game stay against Pittsburgh (three games), the Atlanta Braves (three games, April 13-15) and the St. Louis Cardinals (three games, April 16-18). A STINGY STAFF: Cubs pitching surrendered just seven runs in the four-game Milwaukee series, recording an 8-0 victory on Thursday prior to Sunday s 3-0 win in between, the Cubs fell 5-4 on Friday and won a 5-2 decision on Saturday. Chicago pitching previously allowed seven or fewer runs in a four-game series, Sept , 2010 at San Diego the staff allowed just five runs in that series. Cubs starting pitchers have posted a 1.86 ERA (6 ER/29.0 IP) and held the opponent to a.202 average (21-for-104) in the last five games, starting with Tyler Chatwood s Cubs debut last Monday in Cincinnati this follows a 6.86 ERA (15 ER/19.2 IP) and a.286 opponent average in the team s first four games. ENOUGH OF THE HOTEL STAYS: The Cubs went 5-4 in their season-opening rainshortened nine-game sojourn through Miami (2-2), Cincinnati (0-1) and Milwaukee (3-1), capping it off with yesterday s 3-0 victory at Miller Park the trip actually began with two exhibition games in Fort Myers, Fla., against the Red Sox, March The Cubs were the only team in baseball to start the regular season with a threecity road trip. The Cubs started a season with a three-city trip for the first time since 2000 when they started off with a pair of games against the New York Mets in Tokyo, Japan followed by three-game sets in St. Louis and Cincinnati the Cubs have started a season with a North American trip for the first time since 1988 (2 games in Atlanta, 3 games in Montreal, 3 games in St. Louis). The nine-game jaunt was the franchise s longest to open a season since the 1899 Chicago Orphans played their first 12 games of that season on the road, a trip in which they went 7-5 at Louisville, Cincinnati and St. Louis. PENMANSHIP: The Cubs bullpen has thrown 38.1 innings in the first nine games to begin the season, posting a major league-best 0.94 ERA (4 ER/38.1 IP), the lowest mark of any big league bullpen (the New York Mets are next closest with a 1.21 ERA) Chicago s 38.1 innings from its bullpen are down to 12th-most in the majors Miami s relievers lead with 54.2 innings while the Angels are second (51.1) and the Orioles are third (50.0). The last time the Cubs bullpen had a lower ERA through the team s first nine games in a season was 1951 (1 ER/11.0 IP) thanks to Ed Hartig for his research assistance. The bullpen opened this year with a 15.2-scoreless innings streak through the 16th inning of March 30 s contest that is the longest scoreless innings streak by the Cubs bullpen to begin a campaign since 1990, when the relief corps strung together 20.0-scoreless thanks to Elias Sports Bureau. HE LL MANAGE: Joe Maddon, who managed his 2,000th major league game April 1 in Miami, is five games shy of reaching 500 regular season games as manager of the Cubs and will become the 13th of 54 full-time managers in franchise history to reach the mark. 3 x 5: The Cubs have recorded a triple in five-straight games for the first time since May 14-18, 1994 the last time Chicago enjoyed a longer streak was a stretch of seven-straight contests with a triple, April 11-20, PROLIFERATION OF SHUTOUTS: The Cubs have been involved in four shutouts in their first nine games for just the fourth time in franchise history in 1876, the Cubs were blanked once and tossed three shutouts in their first nine games in 1943, the Cubs were blanked three times and spun one shutout in their first nine games in 1993, the Cubs tossed two shutouts and were blanked twice in the first nine games thanks to Ed Hartig for his research assistance. SURE, IT S COLD, BUT : Following yesterday s snow out, today s temps are expected to be in the mid-40s it s worth noting that since 1990 the coldest game time temperature recorded at Wrigley Field was a brisk 26 degrees, April 20, 1993 vs. Houston a list of the topfive warmest and coldest game time temps at Wrigley Field since 1990 may be found on page 193 of the 2018 Cubs Media Guide. UPCOMING MILESTONES: Ben Zobrist is three hits away from 1,400 overall José Quintana is four strikeouts shy of 1,000 for his career. Kris Bryant Thursday recorded his 500th career hit in his 463rd career game, becoming the quickest player to start his major league career with the Cubs and reach the 500-hit mark since Starlin Castro did so in 421 games on Sept. 7, 2012 (Elias Sports Bureau). EARLY RETURNS: Kris Bryant reached safely in each of his first eight games to start the season before going 0-for-4 Sunday still, Bryant is hitting.324 (12-for-37) with five runs, two homers, a triple, three doubles, six RBI and eight walks to begin the season. Bryant on March 30 went 3-for-6 and belted his first homer of the year, a go ahead solo shot in the third the blast came in his sixth at-bat of the season, by far the quickest he s gone deep to start a campaign. Bryant last season first homered in his 40th at-bat in his 11th game played in 2016, his first blast came on his 32nd at-bat in his eighth game while his first homer in his N.L. Rookie of the Year 2015 season came in Milwaukee in his 40th at-bat in his 11th game played. FREQUENT FLIER MILES: The Cubs on Sunday completed a stretch that began March 25 in which they traveled over 3,600 miles before playing a game in Chicago March 25, this sojourn started with a roughly 1,975-mile trip from Phoenix to Fort Myers for two exhibition games at the Red Sox Spring Training home. Chicago then bused from Fort Myers to Miami for that four-game series, and last Sunday night flew about 1,125 miles up to Cincinnati for two games, yet played just one on Monday after Tuesday s rainout, the Cubs that night headed about 250 miles to Chicago for a scheduled off day Wednesday before busing up to Milwaukee Thursday morning for four games (92 miles). While the Cubs have to endure this long travel stretch to begin the season, the team will actually travel the fifth-fewest miles among MLB teams in 2018 (24,032 miles) Cincinnati has the fewest to travel (20,738) while the Mariners have the longest way to go (40,783) credit to baseballsavant.com.
