Chicago Cubs Washington Nationals New York Mets IN THE LAST 116 In their last 116 games starting July 29, 2015, the Cubs have posted a record, good for a.716 winning percentage and a mark if projected over a full 162- game campaign this is by far the best record of any team in baseball since July 29, 2015 Texas and Toronto are next closest, both at 73-44, 10.5 games behind the Cubs. OPEN AND SHUT CASE: The Chicago Cubs, a season-high 23-games over.500, today play the second of three games against the Arizona Diamondbacks after yesterday downing the D-backs, 6-0, in the series opener John Lackey spun 6.2 shutout innings while Anthony Rizzo was 2-for-3 with a double, walk and an eventual gamewinning RBI in a five-run eighth, Addison Russell delivered a two-run double and Javier Baez later added a two-run double of his own. The victory was Chicago s sixth shutout this season that s tied for third-most in the majors the Dodgers and Phillies have seven shutouts apiece. Chicago is (.746) in its last 59 home games since July 29 of last season. This is the ninth of a 10-game homestand against the Phillies (3-0), Dodgers (3-1) and Diamondbacks (1-0). THIS IS ON THE RECORD: Chicago s record is the franchise s second-best start to a season since 1900 this is bested only by the 1907 Cubs who won 41 of their first 53 contests (41-12). Chicago s (.717) record is the best record in baseball, followed by the San Francisco Giants (35-22/.614). GETTING TO KNOW YOU: Today marks the third-straight game that the Cubs go up against a starting pitcher that a great majority of the team has never faced in the majors only Ben Zobrist has faced today s D-backs starter, Edwin Escobar, and that s one at-bat (a double) entering yesterday s contest against Archie Bradley, only Jason Heyward had faced him before (0-for-2). This stretch started on Thursday when the Dodgers started 19-year-old lefty Julio Urias, a hurler the Cubs had never seen. STARTERS ARE QUITE STINGY: Cubs starting pitchers have allowed just 35 hits in their last 10 starts at Wrigley Field that s tied for the fewest hits allowed in that many Wrigley Field starts, also done in May-June of 2001 thanks to Ed Hartig. Cubs starters have allowed just 10 runs in their last 10 games at Wrigley Field the only time they allowed fewer in a 10-game stretch at the Friendly Confines was back in 1919 when they surrendered eight runs in 10-game stretches three times. Chicago s starters have a 0.98 ERA (6 ER/55.0 IP) in the first eight games of this homestand they ve held the opponent to a.161 average (30-for-186) and a.462 OPS. FLEXING HIS MUSCLES: Kris Bryant has homered in consecutive games four times this season, including Wednesday and Thursday vs. the Dodgers he has nine homers in his last 100 at-bats after hitting four homers in his first 107 at-bats to start the season through May 6 his 13 homers rank tied for seventh in the N.L. ALL GOOD THINGS : Tuesday night s setback snapped a streak of 23-straight Cubs wins in games started by Jake Arrieta that tied the major league record mark since 1913 first set by Atlanta s Kris Medlen in , and surpassed the previous franchise record of 17-straight winning starts by Ed Reulbach ( ) and Pat Luby ( ) thanks to STATS Inc. and Ed Hartig. The Cubs previous loss with Jake on the mound was on July 25 of last season vs. the Phillies when the team was no-hit last night, Chicago was limited to one hit prior to last night, Jake had the best average run support in the game at BUT STILL: Jake Arrieta is 25-1 with a 1.09 ERA (27 ER/222.0 IP) with 52 walks and 222 strikeouts in his last 31 starts since June 21 of last year, which is the best 31-start stretch in franchise history he is 20-0 with a 0.94 ERA (17 ER/163.1 IP) in 23 starts since August 1 of Jake s 20 consecutive winning decisions are tied for third-most in MLB history since 1913 with Roger Clemens in only two others have had longer streaks: Carl Hubbell (24-straight winning decisions in ) and Roy Face (22 in ).
