1 MEDIA INFORMATION Frederick Keys (18-15, 2nd, 4.0 GB) Carolina League Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles vs. Wilmington Blue Rocks (14-20, 5th, 8.5 GB) Carolina League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals Game No. 35 Home Game No. 18 Frawley Stadium Friday, May 12, :05 p.m. BLUE ROCKS BREAKDOWN HOME: 7-10 AWAY: 7-10 STREAK: L 1 LAST 5: 3-2 LAST 10: 6-4 SPLITTSVILLE: The Potomac Nationals scored eight times in their first four trips to the plate on Thursday en route to an 8-4 win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks at Frawley Stadium. As a result, the Northern Division rivals split their four-game series. Anderson Miller and Cody Jones each homered for the Blue Crew in the loss. LOVING THE LONG BALL: Over the Blue Rocks first 26 games of the season the Blue Crew had hit just 11 home runs, the second-fewest in the Carolina League. But over the last eight games Wilmington has blasted 11 more long balls. Anderson Miller and Chase Vallot have led the way over that stretch, each hitting three homers. Miller has five on the season after hitting just three during the entire second half with Wilmington last year. Cody Jones has also clobbered two during the stretch, the outfielder only has three during his entire professional career. Elier Hernandez, Jecksson Flores and Wander Franco all have left the yard once during the 11-game span. ALMOST NOTHING BUT TIGHT GAMES: The Blue Rocks have played in a Carolina League-high 19 one-run games so far in No other club in the ten-team loop has played in more than 12 single-score affairs, and no team in Minor League Baseball has played in more. Unfortunately for Wilmington, the Rocks are just 7-12 in such contests, but have won three in a row. Wilmington has also played in six extra innings affairs already in two more than any other Carolina League club. The Rocks are just 2-4 in those games not completed in regulation. Wilmington is also only 8-7 when scoring the game s first run (every other team in the league is at least six games above.500 when taking the game s first lead). MILLER LIVING ON BASE: Anderson Miller extended his on-base streak to 26 games on Thursday. It is the longest of his professional career, topping his 16-gamer last season with Low-A Lexington. It marks the longest on-base streak by a Blue Rocks hitter since Eric Hosmer reached in 33 straight in Roman Collins and D.J. Burt both had 13-game onbase streaks earlier this season for the Rocks. Miller also has hits in each of his last 12 games, which is also the longest hitting streak by a Blue Rock this season. Over that stretch the secondyear Blue Rock has raised his batting average by 95 points. DEVITO DEBUTS: Chris DeVito had a single and drew a walk in his Advanced-A debut on Thursday. The first baseman comes to Wilmington with impressive credentials. He batted.347 with 11 homers and 38 RBI in Low-A Lexington and led the South Atlantic League in home runs, hits (42), RBI, extra-base hits (21), and slugging percentage (.702). DeVito replaced third-year Blue Rock Elier Hernandez, who was promoted to Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Thursday. The San Cristobal, Dominican Republic native led the team in doubles (7), RBI (27) and multi-hit games (13). At the time of his promotion he ranked among the top five in the Carolina League in at-bats, RBI, hits, extra-base hits and total bases. Hernandez is the second Blue Rock to be promoted this season, joining pitcher Emilio Ogando, who went to Northwest Arkansas last week. THEY SAID IT, MANAGER JAMIE QUIRK: I ve seen long hitting streaks before but (Anderson Miller) has a nice thing going right now and it s pretty impressive. He s playing well and getting his RBIs. He had that great 13-pitch at-bat at the end of the game. He s been hitting fourth and now we moved him up to third with Elier (Hernandez) gone. He s doing a nice job and he is right in the middle of everything. It s a how he goes, we go type of thing and I m very proud of him...(home runs) are the result of a good swing We ve been getting ahead in the count and instead of just feeling for the ball, we want them to get after it. Be ready for the fastball and don t be afraid to pull a ball. That s what they are doing right now and that s a result of getting in 2-1, 3-1, 2-0 type counts and they are ready to do some damage. It doesn t matter if you re Cody Jones or (D.J.) Burt, you have to be aggressive on it. If you swing and miss, you still get two more. They are buying into it. We aren t just looking for the flare base hit, let s get ready to do some damage and some of the guys are starting to show it...the whole bullpen has been throwing great. Their performance was huge because we were short-handed (Thursday) after the doubleheader (Wednesday). We had to use a lot of guys. Five of those guys were down and we couldn t use them. It was big for (Jacob) Bodner and (Andres) Machado to give us those 6.2 innings of one-run ball. They gave us a chance to catch up. (Chris DeVito) is a man. Great first at-bat, 0-2 count then earns a walk and he fouled off a couple of pitches. Then he hits a bullet up the middle in his second at-bat. I m excited to see him play. What he did in Lexington is pretty impressive. I was told by our hitting coach in Lexington (Jesus Azuaje) that he has never seen a guy dominate a fastball like Devito does. When a young kid can hit a fastball pull side, that s a good sign. That means he is locked in and he really looks it. Upcoming Probable Starters and Schedule Today s Starters FRE: RHP Cody Sedlock (4-0, 4.83 ERA) vs. WIL: LHP Cristian Castillo (1-2, 3.58 ERA) As far as fast starts to a professional career go, Cristian Castillo has to be near the top of the list inside the Kansas City Royals organization. Castillo signed as a 20-year old out of Mexico in December of 2014, and all he has done in two pro seasons is win two awards for excellence. He was named the Royals Pitcher of the Year for their Dominican Summer League in 2015 when he posted a 2.64 ERA, fanned 58 and walked only 15 in 67.1 innings worked. Last season he was even better, earning Appalachian League Pitcher of the Year honors by going 6-3 with a 3.13 ERA, 73 strikeouts and just 14 free passes in 72 frames. He led the league in innings pitched, strikeouts and WHIP, and was fourth in earned run average. Castillo enjoyed his best stretch of the season from July 29 through August 11 when he yielded just three runs and three hits total over 21 combined frames in three starts. He also appeared in three games in the Liga Mexicana del Pacífico in October. Still, the six-foot, 190-pounder is not ranked among the Royals top 30 prospects by Baseball America, but he is the fifth-best southpaw starting pitcher prospect in the organization according to the publication. He impressed the Royals brass enough to jump both Rookie Idaho Falls and Low-A Lexington in 2017 and begin the season with Advanced-A Wilmington. Cody Sedlock gets the ball tonight for the Frederick Keys. It is his seventh start for Frederick and his first career nod against the Rocks. Sedlock is the second-ranked prospect in the Orioles organization according to Baseball America, not bad for a guy who started his collegiate career as a position player and did not crack the rotation at Illinois until his junior year. Sedlock set a school record with 116 strikeouts, and was named Big 10 Conference Pitcher of the Year and a First-Team All-American by Baseball America that season though. Sedlock compiled a 10-6 overall record with a 2.96 ERA in three years of college ball, fanning 175 in only 164 innings of work, on his way to becoming Illinois third ever first-round pick. He made his pro debut last season and posted an 0-1 record with a 3.00 ERA in nine outings with Rookie Aberdeen. To save his arm each start was limited to just three innings. Sedlock struck out four batters on four separate occasions and he allowed only one hit in six of his nine starts. In addition to Sedlock, the Keys have shortstop Ryan Mountcastle (No. 3), LHP Keegan Akin (No.6), OF Austin Hays (No. 7), and 3B Jomar Reyes (No. 8). Sedlock, who will start the series opener for Frederick against Wilmington was the 27th overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft by the O s in 2016 out of the University of Illinois. Sedlock has a fastball that consistently clocks in the low 90 s but he can gear it up to 97 m.p.h. He also has a curveball and slider that flash some potential. He spent his first proseason in 2016 with Aberdeen (NYP) and went 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in nine starts. Mountcastle was the 36th overall pick in 2015 out of Hagerty High School in Oviedo, FL the same high school current Phillies starter Zach Eflin attended. Mountcastle was one of the youngest player s in the South Atlantic League a season ago and he held his own, posting a.281 batting average with 10 home runs and 51 RBI in 115 games. Akin enters his second professional season after spending last year with Short-Season Aberdeen in the New York-Penn League. He made nine starts and went 0-1 with a sterling 1.04 ERA. The lefty played at Western Michigan and helped pitch his team to its first NCAA tournament appearance since Hays was a third-round pick out of Jacksonville University and enters his second season in pro ball after spending 2015 with Aberdeen where he hit to the tune of.336 in 140 games. Reyes enters the series on the disabled list. Signed as a 16-year-old from the Dominican Republic, Reyes has raw power to all fields. However, he is still trying hone his skill-set. He repeats at Frederick after hitting just.228 in 126 games a season ago for the Keys. He did swat 10 home runs and drove in 61 runs. To this point, Frederick has the fourth-highest team batting average at.256, second with 168 runs scored, third with 26 home runs, and have the fewest strikeouts as a collective unit (7.3 strikeouts per game). On the mound, the Keys have struggled and yield the highest team ERA in the Carolina League with a 5.22 ERA. The next closest mark is Down East at 4.99 ERA. In addition, the staff has served up the second-most home runs with 30. Last season, the Blue Rocks lost the head-to-head match up to the Keys as the two teams played 23 times a year ago. This season, the two familiar foes square off 26 times but with just seven of those contests being played in Wilmington. After their three-game series this weekend, the Keys won t visit the First State until August 3-6.

3 TONIGHT S BLUE ROCKS STARTING PITCHER #43 LHP Cristian Castillo Born: Monterrey, Mexico Age: 22 (Sept. 25, 1994) Resides: Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico Ht: 6 0 Wt: 190 Pitch Repertoire: Fastball, Changeup, Curveball, Slider THE BOOK ON CRISTIAN CASTILLO: As far as fast starts to a professional career go, Cristian Castillo has to be near the top of the list inside the Kansas City Royals organization. WORKING HARD ON REPEATING SO HE DOESN T HAVE TO REPEAT: One of Castillo s biggest priorities is consistency, both on the mound and in leading up to taking the hill. He is a meticulous preparer and has been tweaking his approach over his first two seasons. I ve worked a lot on my mechanics because I had a lot of trouble and problems with repeating my delivery, the pitcher said. I think I was so successful (last year) because (of those adjustments) so I was able to control all my pitches. PROUD OF HIS HERITAGE: Castillo has a couple pitchers he points to as inspiration. Near the top of the list is former Phillie and current Ranger Cole Hammels because of the way he goes about his business and how smooth he is. But first and foremost is Fernando Valenzuela. He s Mexican and just represented the country so well. Castillo is proud of his heritage and hopes he can represent his country as well as Valenzuela did. I am always proud to represent my country when I pitch. Here in the U.S. you face a lot of good hitters and talented players every day. But in Mexico, you need to play very well and be the best you can just to get the chance to be able to play here. CLOSENESS COUNTS: The Burlington Royals made it to the Appalachian League Championship series last season, an experience that Castillo said taught him the value of clubhouse camaraderie. It was really a good experience. We had a very high level of comfort in the clubhouse and it showed on the field. Now we are close both on and off the field which is a good thing. SO FAR, SO GOOD: Castillo enjoyed a successful Advanced-A debut on April 11 against Carolina. The southpaw allowed just a single unearned run on two hits in five frames of a no-decision. Castillo fanned five and walked two. He hit more adversity in his second start, but still managed to limit damage, stranding six runners in five frames and yielding just three earned runs in a no-decision at Potomac. After suffering consecutive losses to Myrtle Beach and Winston-Salem, Castillo finally earned his first Advanced-A win against Salem. He yielded two first-inning runs, but then posted five straight goose eggs en route to his first official quality start. Castillo has been very good, said manager Jamie Quirk. He mixes his pitches really well and hits his spots. It is his first time at this level, and you never know how a kid will respond to that, but he s done a great job Appearances (Wilmington) The Book on Castillo (2017) At Home: 1-1, 2.70 ERA 3G/3GS On the Road: 0-1, 4.50 ERA 3G/3GS LH Opp Avg:.345 RH Opp Avg:.255 Record when he pitches: 1-2 Wilmington Record when he starts: 4-2 Run Support (overall): 22 Run Support (starting): 2.3 ERA: 3.58 Season-High K s: 6, Down East Wood Ducks) Career-High K s: 11, (7/29/16 vs. Pulaski Yankees) Last Win: 5/2/17 vs. Salem Red Sox Last Loss: Myrtle Beach Pelicans Most IP, 2017: 6.0 IP, 2x (Last: 5/2/17 vs. Salem Red Sox) Most IP, Career: 9 IP, (7/29/16 vs. Pulaski Yankees) Career Numbers Year/Teams(s) W-L ERA IP 2015/Royals (DSL) /Burlington /Wilmington Totals Date OPP G GS DEC ERA IP H R ER BB SO HR HBP WP Score Upon Exit Result Notes 4/11/17 CAR CAR, 1-0 WIL, 3-2 First-career start at High-A POT, 4-1 WIL, 5-4 4/21/17 WIL 3 3 L WS, 3-1 WS, 4-1 Suffered first loss at High-A 4 4 L MB, 4-0 MB, 4-0 5/2/17 SAL 5 5 W WIL, 10-2 WIL, 10-2 First Class-A Adv. win DE, 4-2 WIL, 10-4

(8/27/15-4/10/16) -Reached safely in 59 of his 62 starts with Idaho Falls, including his last 54 starts. -On-base streak of 62 games started on July 12 and went through first eight games with Lexington in 2016 and ended on April 16, Notes: Spent the season with the Burlington Royals (Rookie/Appalachian League) -Hit.215 with two home runs and nine RBI in 49 games in his first season in professional baseball. They said it: Working with the coaches down in Spring Training and learning the game more. That s my game, speed and getting on and creating havoc on the bases. I told myself I had two pitches and then I m out...it took its own form (on 62-game on-base streak). I pretty much just rolled with it. I ended the season in Idaho and pretty much knew about my streak but when I started last season in Lexington I didn t even think about it. (On keeping streak alive) I think developing as a player each year and getting better each year helped... I think defense is the number one key to me. That helps wins games. I know hitting does too but if you have pitching and defense, that can help make a run in the playoffs...working with the coaches down in Spring Training and learning the game more. That s my game, speed and getting on and creating havoc on the base. I told myself I had two pitches and then I m out... I know Brandon Phillips doesn t really run like that but I compare myself to him. Jose Altuve as well. #15 Chris DeVito INF Ht: 6 2 Wt: 220 Age: 22 B/T: L/R Lives: Northridge, CA LG:1-for-3, BB, SO Homestand: 1-for-3, BB, SO Notes: Selected in the 8th round of the 2016 June MLB Amateur Draft out of the University of New Mexico. Hit.375/.448/.685 with 16 home runs while playing catcher and designated hitter for the Lobos Notes: Made Class-A Adv. debut on 5/11 vs. POT and went 1-for-3 with a walk and strikeout. -Played in 30 games with the Lexington Legends (Low-A/South Atlantic League). Hit.347 with 11 home runs and 38 RBI. -Led the South Atlantic League with his 11 HRs, hits (42), RBI, XBH (21) and SLG (.702) -Also was tied for third in the league with his.347 contact-clip. -In his last game with LEX on 5/8 he picked up his first, career four-hit game. (4-for-5, HR) 2016 Notes: Spent the season with the Burlington Royals (Rookie/Appalachian League) -Hit.261 with nine home runs and 50 RBI in 60 games. Led the team in both HR and was ranked second in the league in RBI. They said it: (On what led to great success in Lexington to start the season) Honestly, my teammates. My first couple of games weren t very good and my teammates knew I could do it, they had my back and I couldn t have done it without my teammates and the great coaching staff we have down there...just trying to be as consistent as possible (On what he worked on in the off-season). That s everyone s baseball goal, to be as consistent as possible.... I actually know probably more guys here (in Wilmington) than I did at the beginning of the Lexington season so I m super excited. It s a great group of guys here...i loved that school (the University of New Mexico). Great school, great place to hit. Coach (Ray) Birmingham is a great head coach and knows what he is talking about with hitting. His support staff as well with Buddy Goldsmith, Ken (Jacome), the pitching coach, and Tony Cappuccilli were all great coaches and had great team environment there...(on moving from California to New Mexico) It is definitely different. It was the best place for me to go play baseball. My best friend from high school, Jared Holly, went to New Mexico first. He was a sophomore there my freshman year and he helped me in a lot of ways to make the transition easier...(on transition from catcher to first base.)...i absolutely love it. Catching is rough, I respect those guys for being back there. Those guys grind and put their bodies on the line. Being at first is definitely a lot easier on the body...(on being in the cleanup spot in his first Class A Advanced start) I m sure there will be some pregame jitters obviously. First game, new stadium, new guys on the team but it s just baseball. Hopefully we get a win tonight and keep the good vibes going. #34 Roman Collins OF Ht: 6 2 Wt: 210 Age: 22 B/T: L/L Lives: Boca Raton, FL LG: 1-for-4, SO Homestand: 5-for-15, 2B, 3B, R, BB, 4SO Notes: Drafted in the 5th Round of the 2015 June Amateur Draft by Kansas City out of Florida Atlantic Univ. Considered one of the best pure hitters in organization last season. Turned down opportunities to play college football. Father played football at West Virginia University Notes: Currently riding a six-game hitting streak (.304/.385/.478) -Had 13-game on-base streak end on 4/20 vs. WS. -The streak was tied as the longest on-base streak on the team with D.J. Burt and was the fourthlongest in Carolina League at the time. -Tied for third on the team with two home runs. -Fifth on the team in runs scored (14). -Had eight-game hitting streak snapped on SAL. (.273/0/3) 2016 Notes: Spent the season between the Lexington Legends (Low-A/South AtlanticLeague) and Wilmington Blue Rocks (Adv. A/Carolina League). -Hit.242 with nine home runs and 41 RBI in 111 total games between the two teams. -Started the season with the Blue Rocks hitting.222/0/5 in 21 contests. -Played 90 games with the Legends and hit.246/9/36. -Collected three, four-hit games last year. -Hit.249 vs RHP and.213 vs LHP -Hit.275 on the road (208 ABs) and.207 at home (218 ABs) -Spent the winter in the Australian Winter League with the Melbourne Aces and ranked among league s leaders in total bases (tied for second), batting average (third), hits (third) and runs (tied for fourth) Notes: Spent the season with the Idaho Falls Chukars (Rookie/Pioneer League) -Hit.292 with four home runs and 45 RBI in 68 games. -Ranked tied for fourth among Pioneer League batters in walks (36) during his pro debut. -Finished third on the Chukars in hits (78), second in doubles (18) and fourth in triples (6). -Was the second toughest batter to strike out in the league (every 9.03 at-bats). They said it: I had a blast in Australia. We ended up having a really good team and really good group of guys down in Melbourne, Australia. I had a really good time and got a lot better and made improvements... Living there was actually not as different as I thought it would be. There s a lot of US pop culture there so that wasn t much different. As far as baseball, there was actually a big difference. There s a lot of Japanese guys there so the style of play, especially the pitching is a lot different. There s a lot more splitters than change ups and I also saw a lot more soft throwing lefties which helped me out a lot... I played football growing up and I actually almost ended up playing football in college instead of baseball. I had a few more opportunities in football than baseball but baseball has always been my passion and it ended up working out... Definitely the fans. We have a good group of fans here and they like to come out and watch. I like it here. #16 Nate Esposito C Ht: 5 11 Wt: 195 Age: 23 B/T: R/R Lives: Granite Bay, CA LG: 1-for-3, BB 5/10 vs. POT Homestand: 1-for-4, R, 2 SAC, SO, BB Notes: Selected in the 33rd round of the 2015 June MLB Amateur Draft by Kansas City out of Concordia University-Portland (Portland, OR). Originally attended Oregon State University in 2012 before transferring Notes: Had modest five-game hitting streak snapped on 5/9 vs. POT -Picked up his first multi-hit game of the season while throwing out a pair of base runners on SAL. -Collected first multi-rbi game of the season on BC -Leads team in caught stealing percentage (38%) Notes: Spent the season with the Burlington Royals (Rookie/Appalachian League) -Hit.317 with two home runs and 17 RBI in 29 games. -Did not commit and error behind the dish. (250 innings) -Threw out 28% of would-be base stealers Notes: Spent the season with the Royals (Rookie/Arizona League) and hit.250 with five RBI in 27 games. Made just one error behind the plate. They said it: I would say definitely attitude was huge for me. Learning how to take each at-bat at a time and move forward from the negative things and take the positives of each at-bat and that s helped me relax at the plate... No. Absolutely not. I never had seven RBIs before. It was really cool. I guess the coolest thing about it was that I had no idea how many RBIs I had until the game was over and my teammates were telling me. I think that s the only reason why it happened. If I went in to each at-bat saying I already have four, let me get another one RBI, it wouldn t have happened for me and messed with my attitude. I don t think it would ve been as successful as a game... I think that s the reason why I m here. I really pride myself on defense. I try to come out every day to run a pitching staff, keep the ball in front of me and not let runners advance. I think that s what I pride myself on the most... I don t have a specific catcher. I can give you one guy. I was a big Jorge Posada fan of the New York Yankees. Just the way he was so agile behind the plate and lanky. He wasn t a big stocky dude because I m not like that either, but I liked the way he moved behind the plate for sure... Definitely an energizer bunny for these guys, I think I provide a lot of energy on the field, in the bullpen or the clubhouse. Someone that can provide energy day in and day out because we all know the season can get long.

Rated as No. 13 prospect in system per Baseball America. He is the highest player drafted out of Creighton since (Ryan Gripp, Cubs, 3rd round) Notes: Has fewest strikeouts of any regular starter (8). -Toughest batter to strikeout in Carolina League. (TPA/SO Ratio 19.00) -Leads CL in at-bats (136), 1st in hits with 42 and T-3rd with 4 triples. -Had nine-game hitting-streak snapped on 5/9 vs. POT. Was longest for any WIL hitter this year. Ties career-high he set from 8/6-8/14 last season with Burlington. -Has hit safely in 26 of 30 games this year and has reached in all but two games this year. -Recorded second-career four-hit game on MB. He also stole 24 bases. -Earned MLB.com Organization All-Star and Appalachian League postseason All-Star honors. -Ranked among the league s leaders in runs (54, first), triples (5, tied for first), stolen bases (24, second), walks (35, tied for second), games (62,tied for third) and total bases (99, fifth). -Defensively, paced all shortstops in Appalachian League in fielding percentage. (.981) -Recorded 17 multi-hit games which was tied for team lead. -Had more walks (35) than strikeouts (30). -Hit better against LHP (.316) than against RHP (.270) They said it: On his success last season: I had a little more freedom. The stuff I learned in college ball really helped me mature as a player and really help me deal with adversity. Kind of preserve through the slumps you go through and know how to handle those and I think that was the biggest thing. When things weren t or were going right, just know how to act.... I think it s great. In baseball you have to play defense and offense, especially at the shortstop position. You need to be a good defender, get on base, anyway to help the team win. That s what I try to do day in and day out try to get on base and let the people behind me score me and pick up the ball and help my pitchers out. Anyway to help the team succeed.... Creighton helped me. Freshman year I had the strikeouts, it comes. As I matured my sophomore and junior year I got better a pitch recognition and worked the counts. I got comfortable battling with two strikes and don t be afraid that there are two strikes on you and get nervous. I think that s the biggest thing. Not being afraid with two strikes, work the count as the leadoff hitter and the walks will come....on being rated #13 prospect No I don t think it adds any pressure. I don t try to really read into that stuff. I kind of just play the game and try to help the team win and stay inside the locker room. I don t look too much into that and try to compete and help the team.... I was a big Derek Jeter fan. I used to watch the Yankees a lot and Derek Jeter play. Right now I like Brandon Crawford. I really like how he plays. He s a grinder and would do anything to help the team. It always looks like he has a dirty uniform so I kind of try to emulate that and play the game hard.... I ve never been this far east. It s a new part of America I haven t seen. I ve been and played to the west coast, been to the south but I haven t been this far east so I m just looking forward to meeting the people up here and what they have to offer. #24 Anderson Miller OF Ht: 6 3 Wt: 208 Age: 22 B/T: L/L Lives: Lexington, KY LG: 2-for-5, R, 2B, HR, RBI, 3R Homestand: 5-for-14, R, 3BB, 2B, HR, 4RBI, 2SB Notes: Drafted in the 3rd Round of the 2015 June Amateur Draft by Kansas City from Western Kentucky Univ. They said it: Luckily, I came back from a labrum surgery early in my career at Western and had some things fall my way and got lucky with that. Got a chance to play in the Cape Cod League my sophomore year. After that, my junior year went well and had a good season and started to hear my name a lot more. I always had a chip on my shoulder going to a smaller school and being a small school guy and I talked to the guys who were drafted before me in Wade Gaynor and Kes Carter were the two guys that went higher and they always played with a chip on their shoulder. I think it helped me get to that position and be blessed with that opportunity...at first in 2015 I got called up there after ten games in with Burlington and it was a little stressful. I really didn t know how to handle that situation. I went back last year and embraced it a lot more and had a lot more fun and stayed loose. I had a lot of fun with it. Last year they had an Anderson Miller bobblehead day and the first pitch of the game, I hit a home run and it was one of the top five moments of my career. It was an amazing opportunity and I know a lot of guys don t get to do that so I took it all in...it goes a long way. We spend so much time together and the closer you are off the field, the better you re going to play together, play for each other, pick each other up and play as a unit. There s not separation in the locker room and from what I see we have a really close knit group and we ve had a lot of fun so far. Even the guys who just jumped on board we got to know a lot in Spring Training. Like Foster (Griffin) said, a lot of us played together and we know how to get along with each other. I m really looking forward to it. #8 Travis Maezes [MAY-zes] INF Ht: 6 0 Wt: 195 Age: 23 B/T: L/R Lives: Ann Arbor, MI LG: 0-for-4, 2SO Homestand: 3-for-10, R, 2BB, 3 RBI, 3SO Notes: Drafted in the 13th Round of the 2015 June Amateur Draft by the Royals out of University of Michigan. Was his first-career home run as a Blue Rock. -Picked up first-career, four-hit game of career on DE with a 4-for-4 game Notes: Spent the season with the Lexington Legends (Low-A/South Atlantic League) -Was his first season in professional baseball. -Hit.196 with 15 home runs and 40 RBI in 88 games. -Tied for fifth among Royals farmhands with 15 home runs, despite playing in just 88 games. -Led the Legends in home runs and was seventh in RBI despite joining the team in early May. -Struggled against LHP...Hit.145 with 28 strikeouts in 55 at-bats. -Hit a home run in each of his first two games in professional ball (May 4-5) They said it: It was a huge, huge jump. The long season and bus rides. In college, our travel was much less, the bus rides weren t nearly as long and we didn t play nearly as many games. I feel like that was a huge aspect on top of the better talent that you faced day in and day out... Growing up I lived two miles from the stadium. I could hear the band playing so that s all I knew growing up so it was an opportunity for me to go there it was an easy yes... Like everyone says growing up, it kind of clicks. Not saying I m a power hitter now but it was different to add that aspect to my game. Like I said, I m not going to go out there and try to hit home runs they just kind of happened last year. Hopefully it will continue this year...on going to Univ. of Michigan to play: Growing up I lived two miles from the stadium. I could hear the band playing so that s all I knew growing up so it was an opportunity for me to go there it was an easy yes...it was unbelievable. The coaching staff there helped me a lot and I learned a lot about the game. Constantly building knowledge and getting to know different situations to prepare me professionally...for me it was getting healthy this offseason. I came off surgery last year so just getting a full offseason under my belt and getting my strength back I think that had a lot to do with the flaws I was having and let my swing take care of itself...there s no one specific player for me personally. I m a fan of a lot of guys in the MLB because they re can t miss TV. Watching Miguel Cabrera when I grew up as a Detroit fan and watching him on a daily basis during his Triple Crown season was unbelievable. #13 Chase Vallot [rhymes with swallow] C Ht: 6 0 Wt: 215 Age: 20 B/T: R/R Lives: Youngsville, LA LG: 1-for-3, BB, SO Homestand: 3-for-9, 2RBI, 2BB, 3SO Notes: Drafted in the 1st Round of the 2014 June Amateur Draft by Kansas City from St. Thomas More HS (LA). They said it: I don t remember any of the pain (on getting hit in the face by a fastball.) I don t remember the initial impact or five seconds after it happened. The only thing I remember is walking down the third base line into the clubhouse and everything after that. I went to the first hospital and had to go to a second hospital because the first one didn t have a dentist. The dentist had to pull my teeth back into place. My teeth were bent at a 45-degree angle so she had to pop those back in. The doctor had to stitch me up. I had 30 stitches from the top of my nose to underneath my lip....(on getting back in the box): It was a little tough because getting back in the box was a little uncomfortable at first. Luckily, I got hit in my first at-bat in the arm and I was worried about getting hit again but when I got hit, I said alright it s fine.... Last year I had the solid blue piece like the one Javier Baez wears. It kind of messed with my timing because I could see it every time I d go hit. I asked my agent if there was an alternate and he said yes there is. I said why not and got the helmet and every day I hit with it on the machine and no problem now.... From when I first played rookie ball in Burlington it s a night and day difference to the type of player I am. I have a better feel of how to play the game and how to treat yourself better. You have to play 140 games a year so you have to do whatever you have to do to get yourself ready.... I grew up a Houston Astros fan and I really loved Brad Ausmus. Now more so Yadier Molina and Salvador Perez. What they do is unbelievable and I m not quite at their level yet, but I hope to be soon.
