LHP Chris Sale, who leads MLB with 14 wins and owns a fi ve-game winning streak, takes the mound for Chicago. The White Sox opened the homestand by winning two of three games vs. the Yankees, including a 5-0 victory on Wednesday. Chicago will open the second half of the season with a sixgame trip at the Angels (7/15-17) and Seattle (7/18-20). The Sox trail Boston by 2.5 games for the second American League Wild Card they were 6.5 games behind on 6/19. TONIGHT'S STORYLINES With a win and Detroit loss, Chicago can move into second place in the division for the fi rst time since 6/10, and is looking to move four games over.500 for the fi rst time since 6/1 (29-25). Chris Sale is looking to record 15 wins in the fi rst half for just the fourth time in franchise history (Wilbur Wood three times). Sale is 6-0 with a 1.74 ERA (16 ER/82.2 IP),.169 opp. average, 0.77 WHIP and 109 strikeouts in 11 career interleague starts he has struck out 10 or more in each of his last fi ve outings. The Sox are hitting.285/.342/.478 with 21 home runs and 70 runs scored over the last 14 games (10-plus hits seven times). Brett Lawrie is hitting.382 (13-34) with three doubles, one home run and fi ve RBI during his nine-game hitting streak. WEDNESDAY NIGHT'S RECAP Miguel Gonzalez threw 7.0 scoreless IP, and the White Sox scored four runs in the second inning in their 5-0 win. The Sox recorded their sixth shutout of the season. Avisail Garcia (RBI single), J.B. Shuck (RBI double) and Tim Anderson (two-run double) drove in runs in the second. Miguel Gonzalez limited the Yankees to just fi ve hits (four singles) and earned his second win of the season. Brett Lawrie (1-3) extended his hitting streak to nine games and Anderson recorded his third multirbi effort. SALE-ING TO NO. 15 Chris Sale leads MLB with 14 wins, surpassing his total from 2015 (13-11) and leaving him three shy of his career-high 17. Sale is one of just 11 American League left-handers, and 17 overall, in history to win 14 or more games before the break. His 14 wins are the fourth-most in White Sox history before the All-Star break, and the most since Wilbur Wood won 16 in the fi rst half in 1974 the last American League pitcher to win 14-plus in the fi rst half was Toronto's David Wells in 2000 (15). Sale leads the AL in IP (120.0) and WHIP (1st, 0.98), is tied for the lead in complete games (3), ranks third in ERA (2.93), opp. AVG (.214) and opp. OPS (.602) and fourth in strikeouts (118). TODDFATHER TO DEFEND HIS CROWN Todd Frazier will defend his Home Run Derby title next Monday at Petco Park Frazier, the No. 2 seed in the competition, will face Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez in the quarterfi nals. He is looking to join Yoenis Cespedes ( ) and Ken Griffey Jr. ( ) as the only repeat champions Frazier defeated the Dodgers Joc Pederson in the 2015 Derby fi nals. Frazier joins Jermaine Dye (2006), Paul Koneko (2002), Frank Thomas ( ; '95 winnner) and Carlton Fisk (1985) as White Sox participants in the Home Run Derby. SETTING SALE FOR SAN DIEGO LHP Chris Sale has been named to his fi fth consecutive American League All-Star team (2012-) via the player vote he is the lone White Sox player representative on the AL team. Below is additional information on Sale's selection (Elias): Frank Thomas ( ), Luis Aparicio ( ), Nellie Fox ( ) and Billy Pierce ( ) are the only other White Sox to be selected to fi ve consecutive All-Star teams. Clayton Kershaw (2011-current), Felix Hernandez ( ) and Justin Verlander ( ) are the only other active pitchers to be selected to fi ve consecutive All-Star teams. Lefty Gomez (7; ), Carl Hubbell (7; ), Sandy Koufax (6; ), Warren Spahn (6; ), Fernando Valenzuela (6; ), Lefty Grove (5; ), Kershaw and Pierce are the only other left-handers to be selected to fi ve straight All-Star teams. ALL-STAR STAFFERS Visiting clubhouse manager Gabe Morell, head trainer Herm Schneider and director of conditioning Allen Thomas will be members of the American League staff at the All-Star Game. Schneider (fi fth All-Star Game) will serve as the AL's head trainer, and Morell (fourth) will oversee the AL clubhouse Thomas will be participating in his fi rst career ASG. WHITE SOX VS. ATLANTA BRAVES The White Sox and Braves are playing their fifth series all-time and fi rst since 2013 four of the fi ve have been in Chicago. The Sox won two of three from 7/19-21 at U.S. Cellular Field, outscoring the Braves by a margin. Chicago has won seven of the last eight games dating back to 2004, including fi ve straight from 6/12/04-6/24/10. The White Sox lead the all-time series, 7-5, going 7-2 at U.S. Cellular Field and 0-3 at Turner Field. NATIONAL TREASURE Chris Sale is 6-0 with a 1.74 ERA (16 ER/82.2 IP), 0.77 WHIP and 109 strikeouts in 11 career interleague starts (10 QS) he also has made eight relief appearances (3 ER/9.0 IP). Sale owns a 7.27 SO/BB ratio (14 BB), has allowed just four homers, struck out 10-plus six times, worked 8.0-plus IP seven times and allowed two earned runs or less eight times as a starter. He is 2-0 with a 0.95 ERA (4 ER/38.0 IP), 0.71 WHIP and 60 strikeouts in his last fi ve IL starts Sale has recorded doubledigit strikeouts in each of his last fi ve outings. FAMILIAR FACES Atlanta's 25-man roster includes former White Sox INF Gordon Beckham ( ), C Tyler Flowers ( ), RHP Lucas Harrell ( ) and C A.J. Pierzynski ( ). Pierzynski ranks among the White Sox all-time catching leaders in average (1st,.279), doubles (3rd, 198), homers (3rd, 118), RBI, (4th, 460), games (4th, 1068) and total bases (4th, 1,653). Beckham was the Sox fi rst-round pick in 2008 (No. 8 overall) Flowers recorded 46 homers and 142 RBI with Chicago. SENIOR CIRCUIT MOMENTS Chicago is (.556) all-time during interleague play, the fourth-best mark in MLB ( at home; on the road). The White Sox have hit 432 home runs during IL play, the second-most in baseball behind Toronto (470). Chicago went 9-11 vs. the National League in 2015 (lost fi ve of last six), going 3-7 at U.S. Cellular Field and 6-4 on the road. Chris Sale leads all active pitchers with a 1.87 ERA (19 ER/91.2 IP) during IL play (minimum 90.0 IP). Jose Abreu is hitting.351/.393/.571 with fi ve doubles, four homers and 11 RBI in 20 IL home games Melky Cabrera is batting.393/.414/.607 in his last seven IL games (fi ve multihit). MORNEAU ON ASSIGNMENT Justin Morneau is 2-11 (.182) with one triple, one walk and one run scored in four injury rehab games with Class AAA Charlotte. Following tomorrow's game vs. Gwinnett and an off day Sunday, Morneau's rehab assignment will be transferred to Class AA Birmingham on Monday due to Charlotte's All-Star break. 1-2 PUNCH Tim Anderson (No. 1) and Adam Eaton (No. 2) have combined to go (.307) with 12 doubles, three triples, five home runs, 18 RBI and 33 runs scored in 22 games since being moved to the 1-2 spots in the lineup on 6/13. Anderson owns 11 multihit efforts and Eaton has recorded 10 during the 21-game stretch (Chicago is 12-9). DYNAMITE DEBUT Tim Anderson has hit safely in 19 of his 25 career games (12 multihit) since making his MLB debut on 6/10 vs. Kansas City. Anderson and Gus Zernial (13; 1949) are the only Sox to record 12-plus multihit efforts in his fi rst 25 career games. He is hitting.322/.333/.559 with fi ve doubles, three homers, nine RBI, 10 runs scored and a.893 OPS in his last 13 games. CLOSE CALLS Forty-four of the White Sox 85 games in 2016 have been decided by one or two runs, including 11 of the last 19 the Sox are in one-run games and 10-6 in two-run contests. Eighteen of Chicago's last 20 victories since 5/19 have been by three runs or less the White Sox recorded 8-2 and 5-0 wins over the Yankees on 7/4 and 7/6.
