4 This & That STARTERS SOLID OF LATE--KC has gone 9-2 in its last 11 games, but dating back to the last 13 contests, the starting pitching has done an outstanding job, posting a 2.72 ERA (25 earned runs in 85.2 innings)...during the just completed three-game sweep in Motown, Royals pitching allowed three solo homers for all of the Detroit scoring, as the Tigers went 0-for-18 with runners in scoring position...starters have worked at least 6.0 innings in 12 of the last 13 games and worked into the seventh inning in eight of those affairs...this stretch started with Ian Kennedy on August 4 in Tampa Bay, tossing 6.0 innings of one-hit ball, only to see the Rays rally after his departure...the starters have allowed three earned runs or less in 11 of these 13 games. STRAHM JOINS VICTORY LIST--24-year old rookie Matt Strahm is making the most out of his first look at Major League hitters, tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief last night only to wind up with his first Major League victory after Eric Hosmer homered in the ninth inning...strahm is the 292nd hurler to record a win in a Royals uniform, the 80th southpaw...in six big league appearances, he has allowed one earned run in 6.1 innings, while fanning 12, and though it s an early sample size, his strikeout to nine-inning ratio is an off the charts GORDO GROOVIN --Leftfielder Alex Gordon has begun to heat up as the calendar pushes through the Dog Days, hitting safely in his eighth straight game last night, tying the contest with an eighth inning home run, his second blast in as many games...the veteran Gold Glover was on base three times last night, also walking twice, and has batted.400 (12-for-30) during this streak with seven runs scored, two doubles, two homers, upping his season average 20 points in the process. HOMER HAPPY ROYALS--It s not often the Royals have the home run tag as part of the resume, the club returns home after hitting nine roundtrippers during the 5-1 road trip, including six huge home runs in the last two nights...kc clubbed four solo blasts in the 6-1 win on Tuesday night and then finally got on the board in the eighth inning last night with a game-tying solo shot from Alex Gordon and then eventual game-winning two-run homer in the ninth from Eric Hosmer. ROAD LUCK TURNING--Kansas City is experiencing some success away from The K, returning home tonight after a 5-1 journey to Minnesota (2-1) and Detroit (3-0)...KC has also won seven of its last 10 away from home...last year the Royals had the second best road mark in the A.L. at (.543). REHAB WORK--Lefthanded starter Jason Vargas, out since undergoing Tommy John surgery last August, was the starting pitcher last night for Northwest Arkansas in Springdale against Corpus Christi...in his first AA stint, Vargas worked 2.1 innings allowing four hits and three runs (two earned) with no walks and a strikeout... he also surrendered a pair of solo home runs in his 42-pitch outing...southpaw starter, Mike Minor, out all season as he recovers from wintertime left labrum surgery, gets back on the mound tomorrow for Omaha when they play at Fresno. LONE RUNS BY TIGERS COME FROM LONG BALL--The only runs the Royals allowed in their visit to Comerica Park were a trio of solo homers, bringing the total to 15 runs scored on the six-game trip by the opposition, 11 of which the direct result of nine home runs by the Twins and Tigers...the Royals have surrendered 160 roundtrippers this season, already five more than all of last year, with 94 of those this year coming on the road...most of the home run damage has been since June 3, with the opposition going deep in 106 times in the last 67 games after giving up just 56 roundtrippers in the first 53 contests...the long ball numbers aren t just up in Kansas City, as entering play tonight, there have been 4,155 roundtrippers hit in the Majors, 2,185 allowed by American League hurlers and 1,970 by pitchers in the National League...compared through games of August 16 last season, there have been 706 more home runs hit in 2016 than in 2015 when teams combined to hit 3,449 homers. BASE THIEVES BEWARE--Catcher Salvador Perez continues to hold the Major League lead in caught stealing pct. with a 52.5 mark...he s caught 25 potential thieves, which are the second-most in the bigs, behind only Jonathan Lucroy s 30, and represent a career high for the three-time Rawlings Gold Glove winner... between Perez and Drew Butera, Kansas City has the top caught stealing percentage (49.3%) as a club, nabbing 34 would-be thieves for second-most in the A.L... Kansas City s defensive reputation behind the plate has limited the opposition to stealing only 35 bases on the year, the fewest allowed by any team in the Majors. CLOSING IN ON 1K--The winningest skipper in franchise history, Ned Yost is now as the Kansas City manager...his 985 career victories rank seventh among active managers and he s now tied with Phil Garner (985) for 64th all-time and now nine behind Alvin Dark for 63rd (994)...Ned was named to the role on May 13, 2010 and surpassed Whitey Herzog s previous team mark of 410 wins ( )...Yost s postseason managerial mark of 22-9 is good for a.710 winning pct., which ranks eighth all-time and is atop the list of managers with at least 20 postseason tilts under their belt...yost is the 16th full-time manager in franchise history and is now 58th all-time in games managed (2,015)...this is Ned s second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers ( )...he compiled a record with the Brew Crew including a mark in his last two seasons...yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox s big league staff ( ). vs. Twins (2016) vs. Twins (career) At Home (career) Duffey (career) Berrios (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Burns Butera Cain Colon Cuthbert Dyson Escobar Gordon Hosmer Mondesi Morales Orlando Perez Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
