1 Athletics Newsletter April 15, 2016 Women s Tennis Reaches SoCal Finals, Men s Golf Continues Dominance in Conference As the five seed, College of the Desert women s tennis has earned two upset victories on their way to the Southern California Finals, while men s golf has continued to dominate their competition. Meanwhile, baseball and softball have reached the homestretch of their respective seasons, with only a few contests remaining for each team. 2 Athletics Newsletter April 15, 2016 Baseball Previous week: 2-0 College of the Desert baseball picked up two Foothill Conference wins this past week, defeating Victory Valley on Tuesday, 11-5, and then again on Thursday, In their Tuesday win, head coach John Welker s Roadrunners were led on offense by freshman Travis Tanaka, who collected four hits, two runs and two RBI, while freshman Jason Nall went 4-5 with four RBI. Freshman Trenton Covel had two hits and two RBI, with sophomores Sean Romo, DJ Hernandez and Luc Powers-Hubbard adding one RBI each. Follow sophomore, Cole Danielson, went 2-5, while sophomores Bobby Hoisington went 1-1 with two runs scored. Sophomore left-hander Dallas Asuncion pitched five innings for COD, allowing four runs on six hits. Asuncion (3-2) picked up the win, while also striking out two. Freshman right-hander Jake Patterson picked up his third save of the season, pitching four innings of relief. Patterson allowed just one run on two hits while striking out two. Baseball will look for the sweep against Victor Valley on Saturday afternoon, as they host the 12 p.m. Foothill matchup. Roadrunner victory handshake

3 Athletics Newsletter April 15, 2016 Softball Previous week: 0-3 College of the Desert softball opened their week with a pair of losses at San Bernardino on Tuesday, before nearly upsetting the Foothill Conference s leader, Chaffey, in a 3-2 loss on Wednesday. In their close loss at home to Chaffey, freshman right-hander Angelika Cabanyog silenced the Chaffey hitters through the game s first five innings. Despite trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Roadrunners battled back to score a run when sophomore Amanda Martinez s RBI plated Cabanyog. Sophomore Liz Moreno and Angelika Cabanyog led COD with two hits each, while sophomore Brianna Alcorn and freshman Darbie Catalfamo recorded one hit apiece. Softball will be back at home this Friday afternoon for a pair of Foothill games against Barstow. First pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m. Amanda Martinez watches her hit down the line

4 Athletics Newsletter April 15, 2016 Men s Golf Previous week: First Place, First Place College of the Desert men s golf continued to dominate in Pacific Coast Conference matches last week, earning a pair of first-place finishes on Monday and Wednesday. In their Monday victory, head coach Tony Manzoni s squad shot a program-best, sixunder par 354 at Desert Island in Rancho Mirage. Sophomore Mike Schaloum led the Roadrunners with a 66, followed by sophomore Sam Jackson s 70 and sophomore Michael Starbuck s 71. Sophomores Ryan Emery and Kenzo Vlassaks were the final two cogs in the COD machine, shooting a 73 and 74, respectively. Men s golf will be back on the course next Wednesday, April 20 for a Pacific Coast Conference match in Yucaipa. Men s Tennis Previous week: N/A College of the Desert men s tennis wrapped up their season with a 2-8 mark, which placed them fifth in the South Coast Conference. However, head coach Ken Thomas Roadrunners placed both a singles and doubles participant in the Ojai Championships next week. Julien Bettonville qualified on the singles side after a strong performance in the conference tournament, while teaming up with partner Levi Renterias to qualify on the doubles side, as well. The Ojai Championships will begin next Wednesday, April 20 and run through April 24.

5 Athletics Newsletter April 15, 2016 Women s Tennis Previous week: 1-0 College of the Desert women s tennis turned in a great week of individual and team results, as freshman Linda Guerzize won the singles title in the South Coast Conference Tournament, while the Lady Roadrunners defeated the number two seed, Glendale, to advance to the Southern California Finals. Linda Guerzize earned a 6-1, 6-0 win in helping the Lady Roadrunners defeat Glendale, 5-4, with freshman Lauren Joy earning a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Freshman Diana Cole earned a key win following her 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 contest, while freshman Miyako Kinoshita did the same with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph. COD would also qualify three singles and three doubles members to participate in the Ojai Tournament next week. As a team, women s tennis will travel to face conference rival, Cerritos, Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m in the Southern California Finals. The Lady Roadrunners tennis team
