3 quick HITS (CON T.) Baylor s 18-game winning streak in Big 12 Conference play ended as the longest by any team in the league s 16- year history. The Bears broke Texas record of 17 straight conference wins set in Baylor was in 1 or 2-run games and 31-8 when its starting pitcher lasted at least 5.0 innings last season. Baylor is 7-11 last season when scoring three or fewer runs. The Bears were 3-22 in such games in Baylor s 18-0 start in Big 12 play in 2012 was the best by any team in the conference s 16-year history 11 games better than the previous longest winning streak to start a Big 12 season (Texas started 7-0 in 1999). Baylor had a school-record 11 players named 2012 All-Big 12 by the league s coaches, including 7 1st-teamers. Baylor claimed the 2012 Big 12 Player (Josh Ludy), Newcomer (Nathan Orf) and coach (Steve Smith) of the Year. BU had 10 players named 2012 Academic All-Big 12 on May 15, its 4th consecutive year with at least 9 honorees. Baylor s 2012 offense led the Big 12 in batting average (.309), on-base percentage (.406), slugging percentage (.442), runs (427), hits (675), home runs (46), RBI (387) and walks (296). Baylor 2012 pitchers finished Big 12 play leading the league in ERA (2.89), fewest home runs allowed (7), fewest walks per 9 innings (2.15) and saves (11). Baylor s 2012 team slugging percentage in Big 12 games (.473) was 84 points higher than the next closest team, and the Bears 23 home runs in league play were 7 more than any other team. Baylor swept six straight Big 12 series. The Bears had never swept three straight Big 12 series prior to Baylor set a conference record with six Big 12 Player of the Week awards in Josh Ludy and Logan Vick were each honored twice, and Jake Miller and Max Muncy each picked up one award. Baylor s 17 wins in the month of April 2012 (17-1) tied the most in a single month of the 18-year Steve Smith era. The Bears also won 17 games in April of 2000 (17-3). Baylor swept 7 series in a season for the first time in program history in The Bears have 3-game sweeps vs. Oral Roberts, vs. Texas Tech, vs. Kansas, vs. Oklahoma State, at Missouri, at Kansas State and vs. Texas A&M. OF Adam Toth was named Baylor s first-ever Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on April 9, 2012, and Michael Howard (April 16) and Nathan Orf (April 23) gave the Bears three straight Newcomer of the Week winners. Baylor has been ranked in at least one in-season Baseball America Top 25 poll in 14 of the last 16 seasons. 24-GAME WINNING STREAK NOTES Baylor s school-record 24-game winning streak (3/16 4/22) was the 2nd-longest streak in Division I last season. 18 of Baylor s 24 straight wins were in Big 12 play, breaking the Big 12 s longest winning streak record. Baylor s bullpen went 11-0 with a 2.55 ERA and 12 saves in 84.2 innings during the 24-game winning streak. Baylor outscored opponents , hit.339 as a team and posted a 2.92 ERA during the 24-game streak. Baylor came from behind to win 14 times during its 24-game winning streak. The Bears 9-game road winning streak tied for the longest road winning streak in program history (1985). BAyLOR VS. UC IRVINE SERIES HISTORy Baylor is 6-3 all-time against UC Irvine, and the Bears are 3-0 in games played in Irvine. Baylor took both games last year at Baylor Ballpark to even the series in Waco to 3-3 after UC Irvine swept a three-game series against the Bears in 2004 at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears knocked off fifth-ranked UCI, 4-3, in the second game of the 2009 QTI Baylor Classic. Baylor swept a three-game series in Irvine as part of an 11-game winning streak in BAyLOR VS. BIG WEST CONFERENCE Baylor is all-time against teams currently playing as members of the Big West Conference. The Bears have played against UC Irvine (6-3), Cal State Fullerton (2-4), Long Beach State (5-10) and Pacific (3-2). BAyLOR RANKED IN TOP 30 IN TWO PRESEASON POLLS Baylor enters the season ranked 23rd in USA Today/ESPN Preseason Coaches Poll and 27th in NCBWA Preseason Poll. Four Big 12 teams are ranked in at least one of the four national preseason polls. League newcomer TCU is ranked as high as No. 12 (USA Today Coaches Poll) while Oklahoma s highest spot is No. 14 (Collegiate Baseball). Baylor is also ranked with a No. 23 spot on the USA Today list while Texas is ranked No. 21 by Collegiate Baseball. The USA Today Coaches Poll has five league teams ranked or receiving votes - TCU (No. 12), Oklahoma (No. 16), Baylor (No. 23), and Oklahoma State and Texas receiving votes. MISCELLANEOUS quick HITS Since the start of the 2003 season, Baylor is: (.674) when its starting pitcher lasts at least 5.0 innings (.752) when its pitchers record at least 10 strikeouts (.764) when scoring first (.861) when out-hitting its opponent (.786) when holding its opponent to fewer than five runs (.833) when scoring at least six runs (.871) when scoring at least seven runs Since the start of the 2002 season, Baylor has won 94.2% of the time when leading after eight innings (326-20). Baylor has won 80 of its last 99 games when hitting at least two home runs. Baylor is in extra-inning games since the start of the 2003 season, including a 3-2 record last season. Baylor has won 33 of its last 55 home games in which the opponent scored in the first inning. Baylor has won 16 of its last 19 Big 12 Conference series finales with a chance for a series sweep. Only three times has Baylor won the first two games of a Big 12 series at home and not completed the sweep 1999 vs. Oklahoma, 2001 vs. Missouri and 2009 vs. Texas Tech. It s the 14th time in the last 15 seasons Baylor has been picked to finish in the conference s top half. Oklahoma was the preseason favorite for the second time in league history. The Bears non-conference schedule is rated the 13th-toughest nationally (No. 1 in Big 12), and overall, BU plays 17 games against NCAA Tournament teams from 2012 this season. BEARS IN SEASON OPENERS Baylor is 11-7 in season openers under head coach Steve Smith, including wins in four of the last five seasons (Purdue in 2008, Pacific in 2009, Duke in 2010 and Oral Roberts in 2012). The Bears are 6-3 in their last nine season openers after dropping four straight from 2001 to Baylor is 3-4 when opening the season away from Baylor Ballpark in Smith s 18-year tenure. GARNER NAMED TO NCBWA STOPPER OF THE year WATCH LIST Baylor senior RHP Max Garner was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List on Feb. 7. Garner is one of 75 players on the initial watch list for the ninth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. Garner earned 2012 first-team All-Big 12 honors from league's coaches as relief pitcher after leading the Big 12 with 10 saves, despite not recording first save until team's 30th game of season. His 10 saves tied for seventh-most saves in a single season in Baylor history. Garner is the fifth pitcher in program history to lead team in saves outright in two consecutive seasons and the first Baylor pitcher to ever lead a conference in saves outright. SMITH NAMED REGIONAL COACH OF THE year Baylor head coach Steve Smith was honored as the 2012 Midwest Region Coach of the Year by American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). The award was Smith's first-ever ABCA regional honor. He was previously named 2012 Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year, marking the fifth time he's been tabbed conference coach of the year by at least one publication. Smith was also one of seven finalists for the 2012 CollegeBaseballInsider.com National Coach of the Year honor. FOUR NAMED ALL-AMERICANS Baylor placed four players on the Louisville Slugger All-America teams released by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in Josh Turley earned second-team honors, while Trent Blank, Josh Ludy and Logan Vick were named to the third team. The four selections were the most ever by a Big 12 Conference team and gave the Bears 22 All-Americans in the program s history. SIX SELECTED IN DRAFT, INCLUDING ENTIRE PITCHING ROTATION Six Baylor players were selected in the 2012 MLB Draft, including all three members of Baylor s 2012 weekend pitching rotation. The Bears have had multiple players drafted in 14 of the last 15 drafts, at least one Bear has been chosen in every year since 1991 and BU has had 123 total draft picks. Max Muncy (5th round, Oakland Athletics), Josh Ludy (8th round, Philadelphia Phillies), Logan Vick (11th round, Cleveland Indians), Josh Turley (16th round, Detroit Tigers), Tyler Bremer (27th round, Chicago Cubs) and Trent Blank (30th round, Colorado Rockies) were all chosen. Muncy, Vick and Turley all signed professional contracts to give up their senior seasons. Three of the players had been drafted previously, and each of them improved their draft position significantly. Muncy moved from the 41st round in 2009 to the 5th round in 2012, Turley jumped from the 36th round in 2009 to the 16th round in 2012 and Bremer moved from the 36th round in 2010 to the 27th round in BAyLOR S BIG FOUR Baylor athletics made history with its big four sports during the academic year. Football (10), men s basketball (30) and women s basketball (40) combined for 80 wins, and with baseball s 48 wins to this point, the Bears broke the national record for most combined wins in one year by the big four sports. Texas held the record with 123 wins during the academic year. UT football (10-3), men s basketball (25-8), women s basketball (30-5) and baseball (58-15) combined for a overall record. Entering the NCAA Waco Super Regional, Baylor has combined to go in the big four sports: football (10-3), men s basketball (30-8), women s basketball (40-0) and baseball (48-15). 5 HISTORIC year IN BAyLOR ATHLETICS Baylor had an unprecedented amount of success during the academic year. Every Baylor team qualified for the postseason for first time in Baylor history. The Bears shared the top spot with Kentucky in the April 23 CBN poll, took over sole possession of the top spot on April 30, and dropped to No. 2 despite not playing any games the week of May 6. SMITH BREAKS ALL-TIME WINS RECORD With a win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on April 17, 2012, head coach Steve Smith broke Baylor s all-time wins record for any sport with his 650th career victory. Smith is in 18 seasons leading the Bears. He passed his predecessor, the late Mickey Sullivan ( ), for the Baylor coaching wins record. Sullivan recorded his 649 wins in 1,081 games, while Smith recorded 657 wins through the same number of games. Orf passed Matt Williams (23 in 2003) for the Baylor record, and he passed Kansas State s Daniel Dellasega (27 in 2010) for the Big 12 record. Orf finished tied for second nationally, trailing only Davis (37). Orf has been hit by a pitch 56 times in his career, which would make him Baylor s all-time leader, but 21 of those HBP came in his two years playing at Illinois-Chicago. Instead, Orf is second in program history with 35 career HBP. SCHOOL-RECORD 11 NAMED ALL-BIG 12, INCLUDING POy, NOy, COy Baylor had a school-record 11 players earn All-Big 12 honors from the league s coaches last season, including Big 12 Conference Player of the Year Josh Ludy and Newcomer of the Year Nathan Orf. Ludy (C) and Orf (DH) were joined on the first team by Josh Turley (SP), Max Garner (RP), Max Muncy (IF), Lawton Langford (IF) and Logan Vick (OF). Cal Towey (IF) and Trent Blank (SP) earned second-team honors, and Dan Evatt (OF) and Joey Hainsfurther (UTL) were honorable mention selections. Additionally, head coach Steve Smith was named Big 12 Coach of the Year, and Michael Howard (OF), Adam Toth (OF) and Ryan Smith (RP) were earned All-Freshman honors. Baylor s seven first-team selections were three more than any previous season, as the Bears accounted for seven of the league s 17 first-team honorees. The Bears have earned 102 all-conference honors in the league s 16-year history, including 38 first-team selections. BIG 12 S PLAyER, NEWCOMER AND COACH OF THE year Baylor had the Big 12 s Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and Coach of the Year in Josh Ludy became the fourth Bear to win Big 12 Player of the Year from the league s coaches and the first since Kelly Shoppach in Nathan Orf won the Bears first-ever Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honor and joined Tim Peters (1995, SWC) as Baylor s only newcomer of the year winners, and head coach Steve Smith earned his second Big 12 Coach of the Year award from the league s coaches. Smith has been named conference coach of the year by at least one publication in five different seasons. BROWDER NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN Kolt Browder, a mechanical engineering major, was named a third-team Academic All-American by CoSIDA in He became the 10th Academic All-American in program history, and the Bears have had an Academic All-American in four consecutive seasons for the first time. Browder also earned first-team Academic All-Big 12 honors in three consecutive seasons, to become the 14th player in program history with three first-team honors. He has had a perfect 4.0 GPA each year, making him one of two Big 12 players in 2010, one of two in 2011 and one of three in BEARS POST 2ND-BEST RECORD IN BIG 12 HISTORy Baylor s.833 winning percentage in 2012 Big 12 play was the second-best by any team in the league s 16- year history. Baylor s longest previous Big 12 winning streak was nine games in 1999, and Baylor had never swept more than two consecutive Big 12 series prior to last season. The Bears opened the 2012 season of Big 12 play with six consecutive series sweeps. PILING UP BIG 12 PLAyER OF THE WEEK HONORS... Baylor had the Big 12 Conference s Player of the Week six times last season, passing Texas Tech (5 in 2004) for the most by any team in a single season in conference history. Logan Vick (Feb. 27 & March 19), Max Muncy (March 26), Jake Miller (April 2) and Josh Ludy (April 16 & April 23) have all been honored. Vick, Muncy and Miller combined to give the Bears Big 12 Players of the Week in three consecutive weeks, and with Ludy s awards the Bears won in five of the last six weeks of Big 12 play.... The Bears won 2-1 in eight innings in a scheduled seven-inning game against Memphis on March 11, rallied from a 4-3 deficit in the 13th inning to complete a sweep of Oklahoma State with a inning win on April 1, completed a sweep at Kansas State with a win in 11 innings on April 15 and lost 1-0 at Oklahoma in 10 innings in the series opener on May 12. Baylor was 4-3 in extra-inning games in 2011, 1-5 in 2010, 4-1 in 2009, 1-3 in 2008, 2-1 in 2007, 0-1 in 2006, 6-1 in 2005, 1-0 in 2004 and 5-1 in The Bears won all four regular season games that went to extra innings in 2009, but fell to No. 2 national seed LSU 3-2 in 10 innings in the second game of the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.
