1 MEDIA INFORMATION Potomac Nationals (5-3, 1st, -- GB) Carolina League Affiliate of the Washington Nationals vs. Wilmington Blue Rocks (3-5, T-3rd, 2.0 GB) Carolina League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals Game No. 9 Road Game No. 3 Pfitzner Stadium Saturday, April 15, :35 p.m. BLUE ROCKS BREAKDOWN HOME: 2-4 AWAY: 1-1 STREAK: +1 LAST 5: 2-3 LAST 10: 3-5 FIRST ROAD WIN OF THE SEASON: Seven different Blue Rocks collected a hit on Friday as the Wilmington offense scored early then and held on for a 4-3 win in the second game of its series against the Potomac Nationals at Pfitzner Stadium. Elier Hernadez paced the offense with a pair of hits, including a two-run home run that helped push the Blue Rocks to the victory. PLAYING BETTER BALL: Hernandez continues to surge at the plate to begin the road trip. He belted his first home run in 59 games--with his last coming on July 15 of last season. In his last two games, Hernandez is 6-for-12 with a home run and five RBI. Hernandez started the season just 1-for-22 with eight strikeouts. CHASING HOME SOME RUNS: Chase Vallot drove in his first run in Advanced-A on a sacrifice fly on Friday. He also scored what turned out to be the decisive run after a twoout double in the sixth. The effort came on the heels of a 2-for-20 start to the season. Vallot entered the campaign rated as the seventh-best prospect in the Royals system by Baseball America. He spent last season with the Low-A Lexington Legends driving in 44 runs. HOME RUN HAPPY: The Blue Rocks have used the long ball to help produce their runs so far this. With Hernadez long ball on Friday, the Rocks have launched four homers in their first eight games---all against the P-Nats. Wilmington belted just one dinger over its first eight games a season ago. PROSPECTS AND FAMILIAR FACES GALLORE: The Blue Rocks 2017 Opening Day roster will consist of five of the top 30 prospects in the Royals system per Baseball America, including newcomers A.J. Puckett (No. 5), Scott Blewett (No 6.), Chase Vallot (No.7), Nicky Lopez (No.13) and returner Foster Griffin (No. 29). Along with the highly touted prospects, Wilmington will also welcome back ten returning faces to Frawley Stadium that spent time with the Blue Rocks either last season or in The returners include Griffin, Jake Kalish, Luis Rico, Colin Rodgers, Colton Frabasilio, Wander Franco, Brandon Downes, Elier Hernandez and Anderson Miller. JAMIE QUIRK BACK IN CHARGE: The team will be led by second-year manager Jamie Quirk. The 62-year-old Quirk played in 18 Major League seasons for the Royals, Brewers, Cardinals, White Sox, Indians, Yankees, Orioles and Athletics. Originally drafted by Kansas City in 1972, Quirk turned in three tours of duty for the Royals as a player ( , and ), winning a World Series with the club in Overall, Quirk batted.240 with 43 homers, 247 RBIs and 544 hits in 984 career Major League games. He began his coaching career with Kansas City, and served on the Royals Major League staff for eight seasons as a bullpen coach ( ) and then the bench coach ( ). In 2002 Quirk served as bullpen coach for the Rangers, he then went to Colorado as bench coach ( ), to Houston as bullpen coach ( ) and then to the Cubs as bench coach ( ). In 2014 he joined the Padres organization and managed San Diego s Advanced-A affiliate in his first season, and then split 2015 between Double-A and Triple-A before coming to the Blue Rocks last year. STAFF RETURNS INTACT: Joining Quirk on the staff is Charlie Corbell who is returning for his second season as the pitching coach, Abraham Nunez is entering his third season as the hitting coach and Chris Widger will serve as the bench coach for the second year. Combined the Blue Rocks coaching staff has over six decades of Major League playing and coaching experience. THEY SAID IT, MANAGER JAMIE QUIRK: Emilio Ogando came out and was a totally different guy then we saw his last start. He was probably nervous his first game. They got on base and they started running on him and I think that got him disoriented. (Friday) he kept them off base and obviously then they can t run. He did a great job and settled in. He threw a lot of strikes and was great...it s big when you re on the road and you score in the first inning. Two innings later we get the home run from Elier (Hernandez) and that was big. After that, the offense kind of deserted us a little bit, but we held the lead. (Jared) Ruxer did a great job. He hasn t pitched in four days and came in and faced three right-handers and looked very good. (Richard) Lovelady got in a little jam but didn t crack and gave up the one run. That s the learning process. He didn t have his best stuff and he didn t crack. They manufactured a run and he settled down and got the last left-hander out and turned it over to Machado. That s a big thing when you can stay away from the crooked numbers. (Andres) Machado was very good in the ninth inning with a very good breaking ball...(chase Vallot) looked much better (Friday). He s starting to settle in. I thought he caught a very good game and it takes time. I think he was a little anxious to begin the season, but I thought offensively and defensively this was hit best game...there s a lot of demands as a catcher. We ask him to do a lot, everyone asks their catche to do a lot. You go up another level and try to handle a pitching staff, which is a very good pitching staff, and he s settling in. Then you add the hitting part of it and it s a tough go for a 20-year-old kid trying to figure it out offensively and defensively but, he s doing a good job. Today s Starters POT: RHP Joan Baez (0-0, 6.23 ERA) vs. WIL: RHP A.J. Puckett (0-1, 1.80 ERA) A.J. Puckett has had more life experiences in his first 21 years on earth than many individuals will in their entire lifetime. The Walnut Creek, California native was selected in the second round of the MLB draft in He became a millionaire when he signed with the Royals for a reported $1.2 million bonus. Puckett also played football at national power De La Salle High School as a freshman and sophomore and-- most notably-- he spent multiple days in a medically induced coma after suffering a head trauma as a teenager. Puckett bounced back from the medical hurdle to dominate his final two seasons of high school ball and earn a scholarship at Pepperdine University. He became the Waves ace in his junior year and strung together a 45.2 inning scoreless streak, finishing the season top 10 in the country in ERA and WHIP. Scouts like his MPH fastball, but they re even higher on the potential of his changeup, which Baseball America rates as a plus pitch with excellent deception. The six-foot-four, 200-pounder made his professional debut in the Arizona Rookie League last summer, making two starts before going to Low-A Lexington where he turned in a 3.66 ERA over 11 starts and 52 innings pitched. He allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits, but four walks in a tough luck loss to Carolina in his first start as a Blue Rock. Signed out of the Dominican Republic for $7,500 in 2014, Joan Baez got off to a rough start at Low-A Hagerstown in 2015 and continued to struggle after a demotion to the New York-Penn League, resulting in another demotion back to the Gulf Coast League. But Baez rebounded with Hagerstown last season, going 9-7 with a 3.97 ERA and 119 strikeouts in innings pitched. According to MLB.com, the 6-foot-3 right-hander has big-time arm strength, working at mph and topping out at 96 with his fastball, which is why he is the 20th-ranked prospect in the Washington system. But Baez velocity is inconsistent because he struggles to repeat his delivery. That said, scouts say Baez is just starting to grow into his wiry frame, and they envision him sitting in the mid-to upper-90s once he s fully developed. His curveball is steadily improving, but his changeup is still a work in progress. Baez struggled with command, walking four and hitting two while yielding four runs (three earned) on five hits in 4.1 frames of a no-decision against Frederick in his Advanced-A debut Regular-Season Series: WIL vs. POT Date Site Result WP LP Save 4-6 WIL PPD (5/10) 4-7 WIL W, 6-2 Griffin (1-0) Reyes (0-1) 4-8 WIL L, 4-3 (F/12) Bacus (1-0) Machado (1-0) 4-9 WIL L, 8-7 Crownover (1-0) Ruxer (0-1) Orlan (1) 4-13 POT L, 6-4 Silvestre (1-0) Blewett (0-1) Borne (1) 4-14 POT W, 4-3 Ogando (1-0) Rodriguez (0-1) Machado (1) 4-15 POT 4-16 POT 5-9 WIL 5-10 WIL 5-11 WIL 5-15 POT 5-16 POT 5-17 POT 5-18 POT 5-26 WIL 5-27 WIL 5-28 WIL 5-29 WIL 7-7 POT 7-8 POT 7-9 POT 7-10 POT 7-16 WIL 7-17 WIL 7-18 WIL Upcoming Probable Starters and Schedule Sunday, April 16 at POT 1:05 p.m. LHP Cristian Castillo (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. RHP Wirkin Estevez (0-1, ERA WGLS-FM 89.7 Monday, April 17 at SAL 7:05 p.m. LHP Foster Griffin (1-0, 0.82 ERA) vs. TBD WGLS-FM 89.7 Monday, April 17 at SAL 7:05 p.m. RHP Scott Blewett (0-1, 7.71 ERA) vs. TBD WGLF-FM 89.7 RADIO: Rowan Radio, 89.7 WGLS-FM WEBCAST: wgls.rowan.edu or bluerocks.com Wilmington Blue Rocks Game Notes

He led the P-Nats to a Mills Cup Championship in his first season with the organization in He brought them back to the postseason last year after a hiatus in Last season, Potomac clinched a playoff berth with a second half, second place finish in the North Division as Lynchburg swept both halves of the season. The P-Nats finished with a overall record and was ousted by the Hillcats in the North Division semifinals 2-1. Keister started his managerial career in 2012 with the GCL Nationals. He led the Hagerstown Sun of the South Atlantic League to 80 wins in 2013 and finished the regular season in 2014 with a record on the way to winning the Mills Cup. The Nationals top-prospect and 33rd best prospect in all of baseball Victor Robles returns to Potomac after playing in 41 games last season. He hit.262 three home runs and drove in 11 RBI. Entering 2017, the 19-year old outfielder has been named the best hitter for average, best athlete, best defensive outfielder ad best outfield arm in Washington s farm system per Baseball America. Joining Robles is third baseman Kelvin Gutierrez (#16 prospect in system). Last year he had pit stops in Short-Season Auburn and Low-A Hagerstown. He hit.301 in 105 games prior to his promotion to Potomac. In a small sample size of ten games, he hit.237 with a pair of extra-base hits. Other position players that rank in the Top 30 Prospects in the Nats system are shortstop Edwin Lora (#23) and outfielder Telmito Agustin (#28). On the mound, the P-Nats have six new hurlers in their pitching staff. RHP Joan Baez (#29) is the only pitcher on the 2017 squad in the Top- 30 prospects according to Baseball America. The hard-throwing righty has been clocked at triple digits, reaching 100 m.p.h. on the radar gun. He spent all of last year with Low-A Hagerstown and posted a 9-7 record with a 3.94 ERA. The younger Rivera has collected 13 saves in 19 opportunities through his first two seasons in professional baseball. There is a lot of international talent on the P-Nats roster. There are ten Dominican-born players on the roster, including all five starting pitchers for the P-Nats. In addition, the highly touted prospects all hail from the Dominican Republic.

PUCKETT: A.J. Puckett has had more life experiences in his first 21 years on earth than many individuals will in their entire lifetime. The Walnut Creek, California native was selected in the second round of the MLB draft in He became a millionaire when he signed with the Royals for a reported $1.2 million bonus. Puckett also played football at national power De La Salle High School as a freshman and sophomore and--most notably-- he spent multiple days in a medically induced coma after suffering a head trauma as a teenager. He allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits, but four walks in a tough luck loss to Carolina in his first start as a Blue Rock. HOSPITALIZED AND IN A COMA DURING HIGH SCHOOL: In the summer between his sophomore and junior years in high school, Puckett was having fun at a showcase in San Diego when suddenly things became as serious as it gets. He required emergency brain surgery for an accident that occurred as a passenger in a car. A couple a friends were fisting and fighting, according to Puckett, and a blow caught him in the head. It was the wrong spot at the wrong time. Next thing you know I had to go to the hospital and a couple days later I woke up in that hospital. Initially Puckett did not feel any pain from the blow he took inside the car and the next thing he did was play football on the beach. Luckily, for Puckett, his parents, Jeff and Brenda, were there and when A.J. started feeling dizzy they took him to the hospital and later he was told he had been placed in a medically induced coma for three days. He remained hospitalized for two weeks. As he puts it now, it was one of those hiccups in life that you have to overcome. MOM WAS A ROCK OF SUPPORT: When a person finds out they aren t invincible it can be jarring to anyone, but it is particularly tough for a teenager to process. Puckett said what helped him most through the entire ideal was his friends and family, who were there the entire way, particularly his mother. My mom was my guardian angel through this process. Fathers are always kind of tough on their sons and (the scars of the traumatic experience) went away with ease for my dad. But the accident and the recovery afterward still took my mom a while to get used to. Moms are like mama bears with their babies, especially with me because I m the baby of the family. She s a very strong-hearted lady and doesn t take no for an answer. I love my mom for it and everything about her. I can t thank her enough for what she did for me. After the Year/Teams(s) W-L ERA IP surgery happened I really just wanted to get back on the field as soon as I could. The first thing I asked was what helmet I could get to help protect my head more. I never looked at it like it would hinder or bother my 2016/Royals (AZL) play or performance in any sport I play. But Puckett did have to call it quits on the gridiron, which he says 2016/Lexington was difficult, particularly since he was part of a nationally renowned program like De La Salle. It was pretty tough decision (to give up football). (At) the high school where I went, football is a big time thing there. 2017/Wilmington Growing up I always dreamed of playing football and it was a rough to give it up, but I was thankful for the Totals support staff I had around me. ROLE MODELS: As a professional pitcher Puckett understands he has to be himself. But in his early years as a pitcher there were two particular guys he tried to emulate as a kid. I grew up watching a lot of A s game so I was a big Tim Hudson fan. Also, Justin Verlander when I was growing up was my guy. They were just two great pitchers I looked at. But Puckett said as he learned about the mechanics of pitching he quickly realized he didn t look like those guys and it was okay. I try to go out there and make my own game, Puckett says. So I can t model my game after them, but I sure loved the way they pitched growing up Appearances (Wilmington) Date OPP G GS DEC ERA IP H R ER BB SO HR HBP WP Score Upon Exit Result Notes 4/10/17 CAR 1 1 L CAR, 1-0 CAR, 2-1 First-career start at High-A

(8/27/15-4/10/16) -Reached safely in 59 of his 62 starts with Idaho Falls, including his last 54 starts. -On-base streak of 62 games started on July 12 and went through first eight games with Lexington in 2016 and ended on April 16, Notes: Spent the season with the Burlington Royals (Rookie/Appalachian League) -Hit.215 with two home runs and nine RBI in 49 games in his first season in professional baseball. They said it: Working with the coaches down in Spring Training and learning the game more. That s my game, speed and getting on and creating havoc on the bases. I told myself I had two pitches and then I m out.... It took its own form. I pretty much just rolled with it. I ended the season in Idaho and pretty much knew about my streak but when I started last season in Lexington I didn t even think about it. (On keeping streak alive) I think developing as a player each year and getting better each year helped.... I think defense is the number one key to me. That helps wins games. I know hitting does too but if you have pitching and defense, that can help make a run in the playoffs.... Working with the coaches down in Spring Training and learning the game more. That s my game, speed and getting on and creating havoc on the base. I told myself I had two pitches and then I m out.... I know Brandon Phillips doesn t really run like that but I compare myself to him. Jose Altuve as well. #16 Nate Esposito C Ht: 5 11 Wt: 195 Age: 23 B/T: R/R Lives: Granite Bay, CA LG: 0-for-3 4/12 vs. CAR Road Trip: Notes: Selected in the 33rd round of the 2015 June MLB Amateur Draft by Kansas City out of Concordia University-Portland (Portland, OR) Notes: Spent the season with the Burlington Royals (Rookie/Appalachian League) -Hit.317 with two home runs and 17 RBI in 29 games. -Did not commit and error behind the dish. They said it: I would say definitely attitude was huge for me. Learning how to take each at-bat at a time and move forward from the negative things and take the positives of each at-bat and that s helped me relax at the plate.... No. Absolutely not. I never had seven RBIs before. It was really cool. I guess the coolest thing about it was that I had no idea how many RBIs I had until the game was over and my teammates were telling me. I think that s the only reason why it happened. If I went in to each at-bat saying I already have four, let me get another one RBI, it wouldn t have happened for me and messed with my attitude. I don t think it would ve been as successful as a game.... I think that s the reason why I m here. I really pride myself on defense. I try to come out every day to run a pitching staff, keep the ball in front of me and not let runners advance. I think that s what I pride myself on the most.... I don t have a specific catcher. I can give you one guy. I was a big Jorge Posada fan of the New York Yankees. Just the way he was so agile behind the plate and lanky. He wasn t a big stocky dude because I m not like that either, but I liked the way he moved behind the plate for sure.... Definitely an energizer bunny for these guys, I think I provide a lot of energy on the field, in the bullpen or the clubhouse. Someone that can provide energy day in and day out because we all know the season can get long. They said it: I had a blast in Australia. We ended up having a really good team and really good group of guys down in Melbourne, Australia. I had a really good time and got a lot better and made improvements.... Living there was actually not as different as I thought it would be. There s a lot of US pop culture there so that wasn t much different. As far as baseball, there was actually a big difference. There s a lot of Japanese guys there so the style of play, especially the pitching is a lot different. There s a lot more splitters than change ups and I also saw a lot more soft throwing lefties which helped me out a lot.... I played football growing up and I actually almost ended up playing football in college instead of baseball. I had a few more opportunities in football than baseball but baseball has always been my passion and it ended up working out.... Definitely the fans. We have a good group of fans here and they like to come out and watch. (.981) -Recorded 17 multi-hit games which was tied for team lead. -Had more walks (35) than strikeouts (30). -Hit better against LHP (.316) than against RHP (.270) They said it: On his success last season: I had a little more freedom. The stuff I learned in college ball really helped me mature as a player and really help me deal with adversity. Kind of preserve through the slumps you go through and know how to handle those and I think that was the biggest thing. When things weren t or were going right, just know how to act.... I think it s great. In baseball you have to play defense and offense, especially at the shortstop position. You need to be a good defender, get on base, anyway to help the team win. That s what I try to do day in and day out try to get on base and let the people behind me score me and pick up the ball and help my pitchers out. Anyway to help the team succeed.... Creighton helped me. Freshman year I had the strikeouts, it comes. As I matured my sophomore and junior year I got better a pitch recognition and worked the counts. I got comfortable battling with two strikes and don t be afraid that there are two strikes on you and get nervous. I think that s the biggest thing. Not being afraid with two strikes, work the count as the leadoff hitter and the walks will come....on being rated #13 prospect No I don t think it adds any pressure. I don t try to really read into that stuff. I kind of just play the game and try to help the team win and stay inside the locker room. I don t look too much into that and try to compete and help the team.... I was a big Derek Jeter fan. I used to watch the Yankees a lot and Derek Jeter play. Right now I like Brandon Crawford. I really like how he plays. He s a grinder and would do anything to help the team. It always looks like he has a dirty uniform so I kind of try to emulate that and play the game hard.... I ve never been this far east. It s a new part of America I haven t seen. I ve been and played to the west coast, been to the south but I haven t been this far east so I m just looking forward to meeting the people up here and what they have to offer. #15 Elier Hernandez [el-ee-er] OF Ht:6 3 Wt: 197 Age: 22 B/T: R/R Lives: San Cristobal, DR LG: 2-for-4, HR, 2RBI Road Trip: 5-for-8, 2B, HR, 5RBI Notes: Signed as a non-drafted Free Agent by Kansas City on July 2, 2011 as a 16-yearold. I feel like that was a huge aspect on top of the better talent that you faced day in and day out.... Growing up I lived two miles from the stadium. I could hear the band playing so that s all I knew growing up so it was an opportunity for me to go there it was an easy yes.... Like everyone says growing up, it kind of clicks. Not saying I m a power hitter now but it was different to add that aspect to my game. Like I said, I m not going to go out there and try to hit home runs they just kind of happened last year. Hopefully it will continue this year....on going to Univ. of Michigan to play: Growing up I lived two miles from the stadium. I could hear the band playing so that s all I knew growing up so it was an opportunity for me to go there it was an easy yes.... It was unbelievable. The coaching staff there helped me a lot and I learned a lot about the game. Constantly building knowledge and getting to know different situations to prepare me professionally. For me it was getting healthy this offseason. I came off surgery last year so just getting a full offseason under my belt and getting my strength back I think that had a lot to do with the flaws I was having and let my swing take care of itself. There s no one specific player for me personally. I m a fan of a lot of guys in the MLB because they re can t miss TV. Watching Miguel Cabrera when I grew up as a Detroit fan and watching him on a daily basis during his Triple Crown season was unbelievable.

Just for me it was helping the team win whether it s stealing a base, getting on base or playing good defense, I m just trying to do whatever I can.... I d rather play the infield if it was up to me but if they need me in the outfield as well I m also there. I played a little outfield in college but at second base I feel more comfortable... I don t really see it like that but there s definitely a chip on my shoulder seeing all these guys coming from big universities and I m from a small junior college in southern California. At the end of the day I m trying to go out there and have fun and help my team win....looking forward to being with Wilmington, Getting everything I can get out of it. They said it: Luckily, I came back from a labrum surgery early in my career at Western and had some things fall my way and got lucky with that. Got a chance to play in the Cape Cod League my sophomore year. After that, my junior year went well and had a good season and started to hear my name a lot more. I always had a chip on my shoulder going to a smaller school and being a small school guy and I talked to the guys who were drafted before me in Wade Gaynor and Kes Carter were the two guys that went higher and they always played with a chip on their shoulder. I think it helped me get to that position and be blessed with that opportunity. At first in 2015 I got called up there after ten games in with Burlington and it was a little stressful. I really didn t know how to handle that situation. I went back last year and embraced it a lot more and had a lot more fun and stayed loose. I had a lot of fun with it. Last year they had an Anderson Miller bobblehead day and the first pitch of the game, I hit a home run and it was one of the top five moments of my career. It was an amazing opportunity and I know a lot of guys don t get to do that so I took it all in. It goes a long way. We spend so much time together and the closer you are off the field, the better you re going to play together, play for each other, pick each other up and play as a unit. There s not separation in the locker room and from what I see we have a really close knit group and we ve had a lot of fun so far. Even the guys who just jumped on board we got to know a lot in Spring Training. Like Foster (Griffin) said, a lot of us played together and we know how to get along with each other. The only thing I remember is walking down the third base line into the clubhouse and everything after that. I went to the first hospital and had to go to a second hospital because the first one didn t have a dentist. The dentist had to pull my teeth back into place. My teeth were bent at a 45-degree angle so she had to pop those back in. The doctor had to stitch me up. I had 30 stitches from the top of my nose to underneath my lip....(on getting back in the box): It was a little tough because getting back in the box was a little uncomfortable at first. Luckily, I got hit in my first at-bat in the arm and I was worried about getting hit again but when I got hit, I said alright it s fine.... Last year I had the solid blue piece like the one Javier Baez wears. It kind of messed with my timing because I could see it every time I d go hit. I asked my agent if there was an alternate and he said yes there is. I said why not and got the helmet and every day I hit with it on the machine and no problem now.... From when I first played rookie ball in Burlington it s a night and day difference to the type of player I am. I have a better feel of how to play the game and how to treat yourself better. You have to play 140 games a year so you have to do whatever you have to do to get yourself ready.... I grew up a Houston Astros fan and I really loved Brad Ausmus. Now more so Yadier Molina and Salvador Perez. What they do is unbelievable and I m not quite at their level yet, but I hope to
