FROGS Just 10 games remain in the 2018 Lamar University baseball regular season; seven on the road and just three at home in the friendly confines of Vincent-Beck Stadium. The Cardinals have just two more chances to move from 10th into eighth place before the tournament starts on May 23; at SFA and home against McNeese. Seven of LU s nine starters so far this season are new to the team, including Noah Sills, Jack Dallas, Grason Wright, Jason Blanchard, Chet Jones, Garrett Walker, and Taylor Rich. They ve combined for a 3.85 ERA through innings pitched, notching a 3-12 record in 31 starts with 150 hits allowed and 96 strikeouts to 41 walks. Freshmen have had to step up considerably for Lamar this season. After replacing 21 members of the 2017 squad, Big Red has started freshmen 117 times this year in the lineup and four times on the mound. In contrast, their 2018 opponents have started freshmen just 37 times in the lineup and eight times on the mound, a difference of 80. STORY OF THE CARDINALS CARDINAL BATS WARMING ALONG WITH THE TEMPERATURE LU hit.190 in February, but when the calendar flipped to March the Cards swung at an improved.218 rate. April s batting average is.277 through 17 games. Phil Ingram (.000 in February to.288 in March to.389 in April) has shown the most drastic improvement, collecting 28 hits in 72 at-bats with 12 runs scored and 10 RBIs. He s drawn 16 walks in that time and struck out nine times. Logan LeJeune (.000 in February to.200 in March to.322 in April) and Cole Girouard (.000 in February to.373 in March to.375 in April) have also improved quite a bit since the season s start. Girouard went 12-of-23 last week with six runs scored and six RBIs, including two doubles, a walk, and two strikeouts. He stole one base. NOTHING LIKE HOME SWEET HOME Vincent-Beck Stadium has been the home of the Cardinals since 1969, and the site of 1,410 Big Red games. LU holds an impressive mark of (.655) all-time at The Beck, including 27 seasons with 20 or more home wins. In 2017 the Cardinals went 23-6 at home, its best Beck winning percentage since LAMAR PICKED FOURTH, SIXTH IN PRE-SEASON POLLS Lamar was projected to finish sixth in the Southland Conference by both the league s coaches and sports information directors, as well as fourth in the Perfect Game and D1 Baseball preseason polls. Big Red finished eighth last season with a overall record and league record after being picked to finish third in the 2017 preseason polls by the SLC, D1Baseball, Baseball America, and Perfect Game. PRO PROSPECTS GALORE Perfect Game and D1 Baseball ranked the Southland Conference s pro prospects, and Lamar emerged on top of 2018 s draft class with three Cardinals ranked in the Top 10 of Southland prospects. Due to pinch hitting and defensive subs, twice this season Lamar has had all three outfield positions manned by Cardinals with the first name Cole, with Cole Coker in left, Cole Girouard in center, and Cole Secrest shifted over to right field. FROM AVERAGE OUTFIELDER TO ACE PITCHER Ryan Erickson started his Cardinal career as an outfielder, playing the entire 2016 season in the position. He started 10 games that season and appeared in 14 more with a line of.143 /.163 /.170. He was perfect in 27 fielding opportunities. In 2017 Coach Davis and the rest of his staff decided to transition Erickson to pitching, where the then-sophomore initially struggled. He had a ERA in 2.1 innings pitched in three appearances, giving up eight runs, all earned, on eight hits while striking out two has been a renaissance for Erickson, who has a 1.35 ERA through 40.0 innings pitched in 20 appearances. He s struck out 52 while allowing 23 hits and walking just nine so far this season. In April the senior from Beaumont has a 0.90 ERA through 20.0 innings, striking out 28 with four walks and just 10 hits allowed. He has a opposing batting average, two saves, and a win this month. NEW FACES, SAME TEAM 14 players return from a 2017 team that won 33 games and had five All-Conference players. Of those returning Cards, 11 were members of a stout lineup that ranked fourth in the SLC in batting average (.287), home runs (48), total hits (569), and scoring (6.4 runs per game). Of those 12 pitchers who left, two (Tod McDowell and Nathan Gabryszwki) are redshirting this season, and four (Galen Andrews, Brent Janak, Brett Brown, and Ryan Cawthon) graduated. Carson Lance (16th round, Detroit) and Jimmy Johnson (28th round, Arizona) were drafted. Lamar s 14 returnees ranks second-least in the country behind Virginia Tech s 12. The Cardinals are 9-8 in those games. INGRAM STREAKING INTO FINAL MONTH OF REGULAR SEASON Phil Ingram is riding a pretty length reached-base streak, currently at a career-best 24 games. That s the secondlongest streak in the Southland Conference this season, behind Stephen F. Austin s Jared Martin, who reached 35 times. Since Martin s streak ended on April 21, Ingram now has the longest active streak. Only one current Cardinal has a longer reached-base streak in their career; Robin Adames reached base 26 games in a row from May 13, 2016 to March 17, It was snapped at Southeastern Louisiana on March 18, 2017.

He was hired as the head coach on Jan. 15, In a very short period of time Davis has left his imprint on the LU program. Davis coached the team to 33 wins last season, including victories over national powers like Baylor and Rice. Near the end of the season, Davis charges traveled to Stillwater, Okla., where they took two of three from the Cowboys. Several members of the 2017 roster benefitted from Davis guidance on the field. Seven Cardinals were named to the All-Southland Conference squad. In addition to the eight players honored by the league, four Cardinals were selected in the 2017 MLB Draft the most Cardinals selected in a draft since Davis success on the field tells only part of the story. The future looks even brighter for the Cardinals as Davis has been the architect of two of the better recruiting classes in program history. His first full recruiting class as the program s head coach was ranked tops in the Southland, and 73rd nationally by Perfect Game. Davis merely followed that up with a 2018 early signing class that also ranks tops in the Southland and landed another top-100 spot in Perfect Game s rankings. Davis early success with the program should come as no shock to anyone who follows the team. During his lone season as an assistant on the staff, he helped the Cardinals post one of the best single-season turnarounds in Big Red made a 14-game improvement that year, which included a 15-game win streak and wins over nationally-ranked programs such as LSU, Arizona and Texas. With Lamar in 2016, he helped LU to six wins over teams that went on to compete in the NCAA Regionals and a fourth seed in the Southland Conference Tournament, highest seed since Davis was given the obligation to work in catcher development as well as base running. He aided Bryndan Arredondo to first-team All- Southland Conference honors, first catcher to do so since Michael Ambort in Arredondo was one of four Cardinals on the first team and five overall. The Cardinals are doing more than finding success on the field under Davis. LU recorded better than a 3.0 gradepoint average both semesters last year, and have graduated all nine seniors during that time. Former Cardinals Brent Janak and Bryndan Arredondo were named to the Academic All-Southland Conference team. The son of former Louisiana Tech head coach Randy Davis, he saw tremendous success with his alma mater, including a 2009 College World Series Championship, in which LSU downed Texas in three games. That season wrapped up with a record, one of three 50-win campaigns with Davis on staff.

17 Davis has been a part of four College World Series, three Southeastern Conference Championships and five SEC Tournament Championship teams. He advanced to at least the NCAA Regionals every season but one while he was on staff and won five SEC West Division Championships. He began his coaching career as the director of baseball operations at LSU in 2008, but was quickly promoted to assistant coach just one year later. Since, the Baton Rouge, La. native has coached in both the first and third base boxes along with the catcher and outfield position groups. He was a student assistant and bullpen coordinator in 2007 after his playing career ended. After he was designated as a recruiter and directed to find Louisiana prospects in 2011, he aided the Tigers to five-straight top-10 ranked signing classes, including the 2014 group that was voted No. 1 by Perfect Game. In that time, he recruited four student-athletes from Louisiana alone that were eventual top 10 round picks in the Major League Amateur Baseball Draft. He was key in recruiting Kade Scivicque who was picked as a first-team All-American and fourth-round draft pick. Not only did Davis recruit Scivicque, but after Davis was given the catchers position group he developed the senior into a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award, annually given to the nation s top catcher. He was also a key component of Mark Laird s career, a ninth-round selection in the MLB draft and All-SEC Defensive Team member; Laird was recruited out of Monroe, La. by Davis. His judge of talent extends to the mound as well, he found and signed Austin Bain who was able to claim a spot in LSU s weekend rotation as a freshman. Other than the Tigers top recruiting class in 2014, they ranked fourth in 2012, seventh in 2011 and 2015 and 10th in Along with his recruiting responsibilities, he was the director of the LSU Showcase Camps, which has aided in the discovery and signing of 37 high school athletes. The former catcher began his work with the position in 2015, and helped two catchers on staff get drafted in the same draft, Scivique and Chris Chinea. Chinea was taken in the 17th round. Under his tutelage, LSU s outfielders gained a reputation as being one of the best position groups in the nation. In 2013, the Tiger outfield committed just one error in 68 games. He helped in the development of Mikie Mahtook, now a major leaguer with the Detroit Tigers. He was an All-SEC Defensive Team selection along with Laird (2015) and Andrew Stevenson ( ). Offensively, he helped with the development of position players at the plate. During his final season with the Tigers, LSU led the SEC in 10 offensive categories, including batting average with a.322 mark. In 2014, they ranked second in the league in scoring (6.3 runs per game) and slugging percentage (.415). LSU led the conference in hits (722), doubles (128) and total bases (1,023), and ranked second in batting average (.305), runs (439), runs batted in (394), home runs (47), on-base percentage (.389) and slugging (.432) in He was also in charge of LSU s Baseball Camps, the director for the Coaches Committee booster club, direct liaison of the LSU Baseball Alumni and oversaw all summer baseball placements for LSU s athletes. Davis was a Tiger from , and was a letterman on the 2004 College World Series team. He is married to the former Danielle Hall of Bogalusa, La., who was a member of the LSU Golden Girl squad. The two welcomed their first child Everly in September He graduated with a bachelors in secondary education (2007) and masters in kinesiology (2010), and was born May 29, Head Coach Will Davis with two former players, Mikie Mahtook of the Tampa Bay Rays (LEFT) and Alex Bregman of the Houston Astros (RIGHT).
