BUFFALO, NY (April 4, 2019) Hope springs eternal on Opening Day, but the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders fell behind early Thursday afternoon at the newly-minted Sahlen Field, as part of an 8-3 loss to the Buffalo Bisons to begin the 2019 season. Two-time All-Star Gio Gonzalez took the baseball for the RailRiders, and the Bisons lineup jumped on him in the first inning. Just two batters into the game Buffalo had a 1-0 lead, and after one inning of play it was 3-0. The Bisons continued to build a lead with a two-run homer by Cavan Biggio in the third inning and three more runs in the fourth. When it was all said-and-done, Gonzalez had been touched for eight runs (all earned) in 4.0 innings, needing 76 pitches. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre s bullpen was excellent as Adonis Rosa went a perfect 2.0 innings on just 20 pitches while David Sosebee struck out four batters in his two scoreless frames. The offense was paced by a pair of new faces for the RailRiders, with Trey Amburgey (3-for-4) making his Triple-A debut and Matt Lipka (2-for-4, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI) making his New York Yankees organizational debut. By the time the bats got going, Buffalo had already built an 8-0 lead as Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre chipped in with a run in the fifth and two more on Lipka s homer in the seventh. Jacob Waguespack was efficient against the RailRiders lineup, needing 87 pitches over 6.0 innings of one-run ball to collect the win for Buffalo. That game was played two days later than expected after the first two games of the year were postponed due to snow. The lineup that day featured C Kyle Higashioka (0-4, RBI) as the cleanup hitter, and had INF Rowdy Tellez belt a pair of homers for the Bison. Last season s opener was arguably the most thrilling win of the regular season for SWB, in which they trailed 5-1 entering the 9th inning and walked off with a 6-5 win when INF Abiatal Avelino cracked a walk-off three-run homer off former RailRider RHP Christopher Smith. FOR WHOM IT TOLLS: It was announced January 24, 2019 that Jay Bell had replaced Bobby Mitchell as Manager for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders for the 2019 season. He played over 2,000 games during an 18-year Major League career and has spent the last two years managing in the Yankees organization with Double-A Trenton and High-A Tampa. Bell is joined on staff by Pitching Coach Tommy Phelps, Hitting Coach Phil Plantier and Bullpen Coach Doug Davis, all of whom are returning to the RailRiders dugout. Julio Borbón joined the Yankees organization in March and will serve as the Defensive Coach for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. PLENTY OF EXPERIENCE...: When the initial player list was announced by the Yankees at the tail end of last week, it included 17 players who played for the RailRiders 2018 playoff-bound team, 13 players with Major League service time and two top-30 prospects. In the time since, SWB has lost INF/OF Tyler Wade and OF Clint Frazier to the big leagues, with the injuries to OF Giancarlo Stanton and INF Miguel Andujar up in New York. FINALS DESTINATION: For the ninth time in 12 years as an affiliate of the New York Yankees, the Scranton/Wilkes- Barre RailRiders reached the postseason in Since 2007, the RailRiders have won two league titles and have reached the championship round four times, including their five-game nailbiter against the Durham Bulls a season ago in which the Bulls won their second straight Governor s Cup. THE FUTURE IS SOON: The Toronto Blue Jays have a number of top prospects ready to make an impact in the big leagues, led by the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball, Vladimir Guererro Jr. The third-baseman injured his oblique during spring training and is currently on a Minor League rehab assignment with the High-A Dunedin Blue Jays, but is expected to join Buffalo shortly when he is healthy.
