1 MIAMI MARLINS (57-89) vs PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (74-71) Friday, September 14, 2018 Citizens Bank Park Game 146 Home 73 LHP Wei-Yin Chen (6-10, 4.72 ERA) vs RHP Zach Eflin (9-7, 4.42 ERA) WEDNESDAY S RECAP: The Phillies fell to the Nationals, 5-1, at Citizens Bank Park Ace Aaron Nola (L, 16-5) went 5.0 innings and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts The Phils couldn t get much going offensively except for J.P. Crawford who went 3-for-4 with a HR Enyel De Los Santos made his second career relief appearance and tossed 2.0 scoreless innings. NOTHING BUT RHYS-PECT: Prior to tonight s game, the Phillies will honor Rhys Hoskins as the club s 2018 nominee for Major League Baseball s Roberto Clemente Award The award, presented by Dave Buck, Phillies Executive Vice President, annually recognizes a player from each club who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field Hoskins is a longtime advocate for children suffering from Muscular Dystrophy, a neuromuscular and often fatal disease As a high school student, he spent summers as an MDA Summer Camp counselor and made personal connections with young campers that would last a lifetime While in the Phillies minor league system, Hoskins won the Phillies' overall minor league community service award and donated his grant to the local MDA His efforts to support the MDA continued at the major league level, where Rhys proudly hosted, walked and acted as emcee for the 2018 MDA Greater Philadelphia's Muscle Walk, as well as joining local MDA supporters at an MDA Summer Camp day Hoskins is one of the 30 Club nominees for the annual award, with the league-wide winner announced during the 2018 World Series Fans can vote for Hoskins to receive MLB s prestigious honor at WHAT AN HONOR: For the past 20 years, the Phillies have presented the Richie Ashburn Special Achievement Award to a member of the organization who demonstrates the same loyalty, dedication and passion for Phillies baseball as the award s namesake Phillies President Andy MacPhail announced today that the award will be renamed the Richie Ashburn & David Montgomery Special Achievement Award Montgomery, who currently serves as chairman, has embodied the spirit of the award over his 48-year accomplished Phillies career Perhaps his greatest legacy has been his demonstration of class, benevolence, integrity and philanthropy During their combined 95 years with the Phillies, Richie and David are undoubtedly the two most significant figures in club history who have exhibited loyalty, dedication and passion for the game, said the team s Executive Vice President, Dave Buck Because of these commonalities, Richie and David became very good friends I have no doubt that Richie is smiling down, knowing that the award now bears his special friend s name as well "As a family, we ve been fortunate to know David for all of his 48 years with the Phillies Every time you see David, you re always greeted with a smile, said son of Richie Ashburn, John Ashburn There are some commonalties that David and our father shared the love of the game, love of the people they work with, love of the organization and love of the greatest fans in the country On behalf of our father, it s a great honor to have David Montgomery s name forever attached to this award The inaugural recipient of the newly-named award is Director of Minor League Operations, Lee McDaniel, a 23-year Phillies employee McDaniel will be honored on September 30 during pre-game festivities. CATCH OF THE DAY: Philadelphia needs to win one of their final three games against the Marlins this season to secure their ninth-consecutive winning season against Miami (11-8 in 2017, 10-9 in 2016, 10-9 in 2015, 10-9 in 2014, 12-7 in 2013, 10-8 in 2012, 12-6 in 2011, 13-5 in 2010) Philadelphia has not finished a season with a sub-.500 record versus the Marlins since 2008 (8-10; 9-9 in 2009). YOUTH GROUP: The Phillies began the season with the youngest roster in MLB With about two weeks remaining in the season, the Phillies have collected innings from pitchers aged 26 or younger, the second-highest total of any team in the majors (most: PIT, IP) Further, every Phillies pitcher, not named Jake Arrieta, who has made a start this season has been 26 or younger Philadelphia s 117 games started by pitchers 26 or younger lead the majors (next: STL, 112 GS) Offensively, Philly s 3,589 plate appearances by players 26 or younger rank 2 nd in the majors to only the Cubs (3,633) and their 117 home runs are most (next: TEX, 115 HR). PROGRESS IN THE PROCESS: Thus far, through 145 games, the Phils are three games above.500 at and in regards to the.500 mark, have improved by 36 games from this point last year when they were 33 games under.500 at As for run differential, the Phillies have improved by 93 runs from this time last year when they carried a -113 mark through 145 games The Phils, who matched last year s win total of 66 on August 15, didn t notch their 66 th win last year until the final day of the season, October 1 against the Mets, a difference of 47 days on the calendar. ARMS RACE: Philadelphia s starting staff is currently averaging 8.96 SO/9.0 IP this season and are on pace to obliterate the previous franchise record of 8.00 SO/9.0 IP set in 2012 The rotation s 797 strikeouts this season are the fifth-most in club history, 135 shy of a record 932 set by the 2011 rotation With 17 starts remaining, the rotation would have to average about 7.9 strikeouts per start to reach that total. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE: Philadelphia s 519 walks are its most in a season since 2011, when the club had 539 Carlos Santana (97), Cesar Hernandez (87) and Rhys Hoskins (79) are the first trio of Phillies with 75 or more walks in a season since 2009 (Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Jayson Werth) The Phils are the only team in MLB that has multiple players with 75 or more walks in 2018 Among all ML teams, the club ranks 2 nd in pitches per plate appearance (4.02, best: LAD, 4.04), 4 th in walk rate (9.4%) and T-7 th in walks.
