1 game information Tuesday, April 11 Principal Park Des Moines, IA THE BABY CAKES The New Orleans Baby Cakes begin their first road trip of the 2017 campaign tonight with the opener of a four-game set against the Iowa Cubs. New Orleans and Iowa split 16 meetings last year, with each team winning five times on its home turf. NOLA also visited Des Moines during its first road trip of 2016, from April 11-14, and dropped three of four games. YESTERDAY S NEWS Luke Voit s two-out, two-run homer in the ninth inning rallied Memphis past the Baby Cakes, 7-6, to take four of five games in the series. After the Cakes erased an early 4-0 deficit to grab their first lead at 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth, Hunter Cervenka issued a one-out walk to Harrison Bader, and one batter later, Voit drilled his second home run in as many days to put the Redbirds back on top. NOLA got the tying run to third base with two outs in the bottom of the frame before Tomas Telis lined out softly to end the game. Tommy Pham continued his torrid series with a three-run double in the second inning to give Memphis a 4-0 lead before the Cakes rallied. Matt den Dekker hit a two-run homer in the second, and a solo shot by Destin Hood and tworun blast by Matt Juengel in the fourth evened the score at 5-5, where it remained tied until the eighth. Hood reached on an infield single, his fourth hit of the night, then stole second and advanced to third on a fly ball before scoring on Juengel s check-swing infield single. ON THE HILL Justin Nicolino takes the mound for his second start of the season. Tasked with his third consecutive Opening Day start five days ago, becoming the first New Orleans hurler in team history to do so, Nicolino allowed two runs and five hits in 5.0 innings vs. Memphis in a no-decision. He turned in his finest Triple-A start in his last outing against Iowa last August 5, facing the minimum over 7.0 innings as a leadoff single in the fifth by Jeimer Candelario was erased by a double play grounder. THE SKIPPER Arnie Beyeler returns to New Orleans for his second season at the helm. Entering his 14th season as a minor league manager, during which he has gone (.513), Beyeler is (.539) in three seasons at the Triple-A level, including an International League crown with Pawtucket in He spent the last previous three years as the first base coach and outfield instructor for the Boston Red Sox, with whom he won the World Series in Last year, he guided NOLA from a deficit of nine games below.500 on June 1 to get back above the breakeven mark in August, the second-largest such deficit in team history. Budner, a longtime member of the Mariners organization, joins the Marlins after one season in the Angels system as the pitching coach at AA Arkansas, where his staff tied for the Texas League lead with 15 shutouts. Witt makes his professional coaching debut after previously serving as Director of Player Operations at Marucci Elite Houston, working with players ages 8 to 18. Rodriguez, the older brother of Atlanta Braves infielder Sean, most recently was the head baseball instructor for Total Baseball Sports Academy in Miami.
