Right-hander and Ole Miss product Chris Ellis takes the ball against Blue Wahoos southpaw Amir Garrett, the #4 prospect in the Reds organization according to MLB. com. OPENING SERIES HISTORY: The M-Braves dropped Thursday night s season opener to fall to 3-9 all-time on Opening Day. They haven t fared much better on the second day of the season, going 3-8 on Day #2 all-time. In fact, in the first series of the season, Mississippi is just all-time, winning just two of 11 season-opening series in team history. THE SKIPPER, BRAVE AND SURE: For the first time since 2012, the Mississippi Braves have a new manager at the helm in former big league third baseman Luis Salazar. Salazar spent the past five seasons managing the Braves high-a Carolina League affiliate in Lynchburg ( ) and Carolina (2015). He replaces Aaron Holbert, who leaves the Braves organization as the winningest manager in M-Braves history ( ) over four seasons. It will be Salazar s 13th season as a minor league manager, posting a career record of and a record in the Braves organization. He played 13 seasons in the big leagues from 1980 to 1992, posting a.261 average and 94 home runs between the Padres, White Sox, Tigers and Cubs. Salazar returns to the Southern League after serving as hitting coach of the Jacksonville Suns (2008) and Chattanooga Lookouts (2009). FAMILIAR FACES ON STAFF: This season will be the fourth straight in which all three M-Braves coaches boast Major League playing experience on their resumes. In addition to Salazar s 13 years in the big leagues, hitting coach Garey Ingram played parts of three seasons for the Dodgers in the mid-90s, hitting a home run in his first Major League at-bat in 1994, while Dennis Lewallyn spent parts of eight seasons from with the Dodgers, Rangers and Indians....AND IN THE FIELD: The M-Braves return 13 players from the 2015 squad, including infielder Emerson Landoni, who led the team with a.297 average over 118 games and won the Atlanta Braves double-a Player of the Year award. Landoni is rejoined on the squad by pitchers Mauricio Cabrera, Hunter Cervenka, Jason Hursh, Stephen Janas, Kyle Kinman, Victor Mateo (Braves double-a Pitcher of the Year), Lucas Sims and Andrew Thurman; catchers Matt Kennelly and Steve Rodriguez; infielder Levi Hyams, and outfielder Matt Lipka. AVENGING 2015: Last season, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos edged out the Mississippi Braves by one game in the second half standings, sealing the Wahoo s first ever trip to the Southern League playoffs. The Blue Wahoos were swept in three games by Biloxi in the first round of the playoffs, who then lost in five games to Chattanooga in the Southern League championship series. PROSPECTS IN THE SIP: The Mississippi Braves Opening Day roster boasts 10 of the top 30 Braves prospects according to MLB.com, led by LHP Sean Newcomb (#2) and SS Ozzie Albies (#3).
