1 INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME NOTES GAME #106 / Road Game #54 Indianapolis Indians (51-54) at Norfolk Tides (56-49) Friday, July 31, First 7:15 p.m. EDT Harbor Park -- Norfolk, Va. Indians RHP Ty Taubenheim (4-8, 4.17) vs. Tides LHP Troy Patton (1-3, 6.00) TONIGHT S TRIBE STARTER: Tonight s probable starting pitcher for Indianapolis, Ty Taubenheim, is scheduled to face Norfolk for the second time this season and the fourth time in his career... Taubenheim last faced the Tides on June 13, where he turned in one of his best performances of the season, picking up the victory after allowing no runs on just four hits, while striking out four in six innings of work... The tall right hander re-joins the Tribe rotation after spending the past few weeks on the disabled list and hopes to bounce back from his most recent outing before being placed on the DL as on July 11 he took the loss in game two of a doubleheader against Toledo after allowing four runs on seven hits over just four innings of work... Taubenheim has seen work as both a starter and reliever this season, posting a 4-7 record and 4.50 ERA in 13 starts and an 0-1 record and 2.70 ERA in five relief appearances. TONIGHT S OPPOSING STARTER: Set to oppose Taubenheim, is Norfolk starter Troy Patton who will is scheduled to make his first career start against the Indians... After being acquired from the Houston Astros as part of the Miguel Tejada trade in 2007, Patton sat out the entire 2008 season due to injury, before finally beginning his time in Norfolk on June 16 this season... The left hander has struggled in his seven appearances with the Tides, especially with giving up the long ball as he has served up nine homers in those seven appearances... Patton has however shown good control as he has yet to walk more than three in any contest and in his most recent outing on July 26 at Durham, he did not walk a single batter and took a no decision after allowing just two earned runs on six hits in five innings of work. FANTASTIC FEATS: Last night s 11-3 win over Norfolk featured two rare offensive performances as 2B Shelby Ford collected five hits in five at-bats including a two-run long ball in the ninth inning and 3B Neil Walker blasted two two-run home runs in back-to-back innings... Oddly enough the last time Ford collected five hits and Walker smashed multiple home runs was on the same day over a year ago, as on June 8, 2008, Ford collected five hits against Connecticut as member of the Altoona Curve, while Walker blasted two long balls against Louisville as a member of the Tribe... Thursday nights offensive outburst might also be a sign of things turning around for both Walker and Ford as it was Walker s first multi-hit contest since returning from the DL and at the same time extended Ford s hitting streak to a current team best five games.. During his streak Ford is batting.450 (9-for-20) with five runs and five RBI as a continuation of his post All-star break turn around... In the Tribe s 15 contests since the All-Star break, Ford is batting.314 (16-for-51) with 12 runs, three home runs and eight RBI after batting just.167 with 22 runs, one home run and 19 RBI in the Indians first 91 games before the break. NEW FACES, NEW PLACES: With Pirates myriad of trades over the past few days the Indians have seen a large turnover in their roster and are now welcoming three new players to the team as the series concludes in Norfolk tonight... C/1B Jeff Clement joins the Tribe after being acquired from the Seattle Mariners as part of the Jack Wilson/Ian Snell trade, RHP Jose Ascanio joins Indianapolis after being acquired from the Chicago Cubs as part of the John Grabow/Tom Gorzelanny trade and OF Jose Tabata becomes a member of the Indians after OF Lastings Milledge received the call up from Pittsburgh... All three of these new players bring impressive resumes to the Tribe as Clement was ranked by Baseball America as the #1 prospect in the Mariners organization in 2006 and 2008 and #2 in 2007, Tabata was ranked by Baseball America as the Pirates #3 prospect entering this season, as well as #3 in the New York Yankees organization in 2008 and 2005 and #2 in 2007 and 2006, and Ascanio rated as having the Best Fastball in the Southern League in 2007 and making three separate stints in the Major Leagues (Braves -2007, Cubs )... Clement and Tabata also bring two distinctively different offensive skill sets as Clement was rated by Baseball America as the Best Power Hitter in the Mariners organization from and Tabata was rated the Best Hitter for Average in the New York Yankees organization during that same period ( ). BIXLER BLASTS THE COMPETITION: INF/OF Brian Bixler went 3-for-5 with three runs, two RBI and his team leading sixth triple of the season against Norfolk on Thursday night... The multi-dimensional utilityman has now collected six multi-hit performances over his last nine games and continues to thrive in clutch situations for the Tribe as he is batting a team best.373 (25-for-67) with a team high 27 RBI when runners are in scoring position and is batting.440 (11-for-25) in the ninth inning and beyond... Bixler has also definitely seemed to enjoy the move to the lead-off spot as he has batted.304 and belted all six of his home runs, including an Indians season-high three lead-off longballs from the lead-off spot this season.. Bixler s six homers have also all come in the month of July and rank as the third highest total in the International League during the month... The right handed slugger also leads the Indians with 34 hits, 18 RBI, six stolen bases and 16 runs in the month of July and with his recent hot streak now ranks third in the IL with 59 runs scored and tied for second with six triples on the season. STEAMROLLING STARTERS: Since the All-Star break the Indians have received dominant work out of their starting rotation... In their 15 contests since the break the Tribe starters, have allowed more than two earned runs in just one outing and have combined to give up just 20 earned runs in 93.0 innings for a 1.93 ERA during that span... The starting pitchers have also collected six wins, while recording at least six strikeouts in eight of the 15 contests for a total of 67 combined punch outs over their 93.0 combined innings... They have also held opposing lineups to just a.244 (88-for-360) batting average, while handing out only 21 bases-on-balls... Starter Daniel McCutchen has been a decision machine for the Tribe this season as he has recorded a decision in each of his last 11 outings, including a streak of five consecutive victories from June 22 to July 20 that was the longest streak in McCutchen s professional career and the longest for any Indians hurler this season... The right hander has also been nothing short of dominant since the calendar flipped to July as in his five starts during the month he has posted a 4-1 record and 2.10 ERA (7 ER in 30.0), while striking out 17 and walking just two... The month of July has also seen turn around performances from starters Eric Hacker and Brad Lincoln, both of whom have settled after beginning the month with some tough losses... For Hacker, he has posted a 1-1 record and allowed just three earned runs over his last 20.0 innings for a 1.35 ERA over those three starts, while Lincoln has found his control, not having surrendered a walk in any of his last three contests, while having allowed just four earned runs over his last 13 innings for a 2.77 ERA. CLOSE CALLS: Before Thursday s 11-3 blow out victory over Norfolk the Indians had played in four straight one-run contests and still have seen 11 time of their last 13 games be decided by two runs or less... Currently the Tribe s 37 single-run games are tied with Pawtucket for most in the International League, while their current opponent Norfolk is ranked last with 21 total one-score contests... The Indians also lead the International League and all of Triple-A baseball with 60 of their contests having been decided by two runs or less... With their extra-inning victory over Durham on Thursday July 23, Indianapolis has also seen eight of their 37 one-run games go into extra-innings where the Indians have the best winning percentage (.875) in all of Triple-A Baseball with a 7-1 record in games that go to extra frames... On the 23rd the Tribe also took home a thrilling walk-off victory to give them eight already this season, which is already three more than they had all of last season.
