1 MEDIA INFORMATION Myrtle Beach Pelicans (65-59 / 22-32, 5th, 11.5 GB / Southern) Carolina League Affiliate of the Chicago Cubs vs. Wilmington Blue Rocks (64-59 / 25-28, 4th, 8.5 GB / Northern) Carolina League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals Game No. 124/54 Home Game No. 59 Frawley Stadium Friday, August 18, :05 p.m. BLUE ROCKS BREAKDOWN HOME: AWAY: STREAK: L 1 LAST 5: 2-3 LAST 10: 4-6 TWICE AS NICE: The Wilmington Blue Rocks could not keep the Frederick Keys off the scoreboard in a 9-2 loss Thursday at Frawley Stadium. Frederick plated eight of its nine runs with two outs and forced a split in the pivotal four-game series. Chris DeVito paced the Wilmington offense with three hits, including a double. Despite the loss, the Rocks did not lose ground to the leading Salem Red Sox in the Northern Division Wild Card race and remain 2.5 games back. DEVITO GETS GOING: Chris DeVito picked up three hits in Thursday s loss and busted out of a 7-for-74 slump with the multi-hit effort. It was also his 19th multiple hit performance since joining the Blue Rocks in mid-may. The three-hit game on Thursday marked just the third multi-hit game since July 23. Overall this season, DeVito has nine three-hit games between Low-A Lexington and Wilmington. Prior to his promotion to Wilmington, DeVito hit an impressive.347 and led the South Atlantic League with 11 home runs, 38 RBIs and 42 hits before his departure from the Legends. HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE DOESN T HOLD UP: Home-field advantage has been the key in the season series between the Wilmington Blue Rocks and Frederick in The Rocks lost for only the third time in 11 tries versus the Keys at Frawley Stadium, while Frederick owns an 8-4 record at Nymeo Field. Despite the loss Wilmington is still 12 games above.500 at home overall in 2017, and will play 11 of its final 17 games in the friendly confines of Frawley Stadium. WONDERFUL WANDER: Wander Franco had yet another triple on Thursday. It came on the heels of his incredible game on Wednesday, when he collected three hits and three RBIs in the doubleheader. The third baseman also registered his team-leading 33rd multi-hit game in the first contest of the twin-bill. Franco has had a scorching month of August, hitting.340 with four triples and 11 RBIs during the last full month of the season. He is now second on the team with 44 RBIs on the year. HELLO STRANGER: Wilmington welcomes Myrtle Beach this weekend for a threegame series. Remarkably it is the first time the Pelicans will visit Frawley Stadium in Even more mind-boggling is the fact that the Pelicans are not the last team to make their first visit to the First State this season. The Down East Wood Ducks come to Wilmington for the first time in the season s penultimate series. Before this weekend the last time the Blue Crew squared off with Myrtle Beach was way back on April 27. TONS OF TIGHT GAMES: The Blue Rocks have played in a Carolina League-high 44 one-run games so far in No other club in the ten-team loop has played in more than 42 single-score affairs. The Rocks are now in such contests. Wilmington opened the season just 4-13 in one-run games, then won 17 of their next 19, before dropping five of its last eight affairs decided by one tally. THEY SAID IT MANAGER JAMIE QUIRK: Jared Ruxer wasn t on (Thursday). He couldn t make his pitches. I thought he stayed away too much, (Frederick) was shooting the ball the other way on him. He didn t make an adjustment going in and getting them. A pitcher has to have one side of the plate or the other and they were taking away the side of the plate he wanted. You have to make an adjustment to get them off it but we didn t make an adjustment. We just stayed with our program and they kept shooting balls the other way. Next thing you know they have five runs in two innings and Ruxer is gone...eight RBIs with twoouts (for Frederick) kills you. You are almost out of the inning and thinking let s get back in the dugout but you don t finish it off. Two-out RBIs are a great thing when you are on offense and are killer when you are on defense...the key (for Chris DeVito ), is hitting everything hard. You never know when it is going to happen (breaking out of a slump). As a hitter, you are battling yourself, you are battling everything, you think you stink, all those things. (Thursday) he hit the ball hard (collected three hits). Hopefully it carries over and he finishes good because we need him. (The three hits) were a good sign (Thursday)...Cristian Castillo has been struggling. He is the guy we don t get many runs for. Hopefully we can get him some runs and get him settled in. He has been struggling lately. Castillo is a guy who is going to give up hits, going to get some scary innings. In the first three-four months of the season he would get out of it, that is just the way he pitches. He is one of those guys you have to bear with and hopefully he makes his pitches when he needs to. You know there is going to be traffic, he is not a guy who limits the opposing team to a few hits. Hopefully he is on track tomorrow, I feel very good when he is on the mound but I just hope we can get some runs for him early. He has been that guy that feels like he has to throw zeroes up all the time. If we can get him a lead we will see what happens. I think he could be really good. Kyle Miller gets the ball tonight for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Miller was selected in the 19th round of the 2015 draft by the Cubs out of Florida Atlantic University. He earned a spot in the Owls rotation as a junior in 2015 and led the team that season in wins (seven) and strikeouts (62). He became the Owls fifth consecutive Owls to be drafted since Miller listened to the draft with his father, John, waiting for Kyle s name to be called. When the Cubs selection finally came through, Miller and his father celebrated by going out to lunch with his mother, Julie, and sister, Callie. Miller was promoted to Myrtle Beach from Low-A South Bend on April 28. With the Low-A Cubs, he went 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA. Over 14.0 innings, Miller yielded 10 hits, walked nine and struck out six. With the Pelicans Miller has fared much better at home, posting a 2.72 ERA on the Grand Strand while turning in a 7.13 ERA on the road. He has combined to allow just three runs (two earned) over 12 innings pitched in his last two outings. He was named the Royals Pitcher of the Year for their Dominican Summer League in 2015 when he posted a 2.64 ERA, fanned 58 and walked only 15 in 67.1 innings worked. He led the league in innings pitched, strikeouts and WHIP, and was fourth in earned run average. Castillo enjoyed his best stretch of the season from July 29 through August 11 when he yielded just three runs and three hits total over 21 combined frames in three starts. He also appeared in three games in the Liga Mexicana del Pacífico in October. Still, the six-foot, 190-pounder is not ranked among the Royals top 30 prospects by Baseball America, but he is the fifth-best southpaw starting pitcher prospect in the organization according to the publication. He impressed the Royals brass enough to jump both Rookie Idaho Falls and Low-A Lexington in 2017 to begin the season with Advanced-A Wilmington. After being named a CL All-Star this year, the lefty has been in a losing streak over the last month-and-a-half. He has lost his last six consecutive outings, including his last start at Salem on August 13 when he allowed five runs, but only two earned, in 3.2 innings of work. He has allowed three earned runs or more in five of his last six starts after doing so only five times in his first 17 outings. 3 TONIGHT S BLUE ROCKS STARTING PITCHER #43 LHP Cristian Castillo Acquired: Signed as non-drafted free agent on December 15, 2014 by Kansas City Born: Monterrey, Mexico Age: 22 (Sept. 25, 1994) Resides: Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico Ht: 6 0 Wt: 190 Pitch Repertoire: Fastball, Changeup, Curveball, Slider THE BOOK ON CRISTIAN CASTILLO: As far as fast starts to a professional career go, Cristian Castillo has to be near the top of the list inside the Kansas City Royals organization. Castillo signed as a 20-year old out of Mexico in December of 2014, and all he has done in two pro seasons is win two awards for excellence. He was named the Royals Pitcher of the Year for their Dominican Summer League in 2015 when he posted a 2.64 ERA, fanned 58 and walked only 15 in 67.1 innings worked. Last season he was even better, earning Appalachian League Pitcher of the Year honors by going 6-3 with a 3.13 ERA, 73 strikeouts and just 14 free passes in 72 frames. His last time out in the first half he tossed a season-high eight frames without allowing a run while yielding just three hits in a win over Salem. The CL All-Star has found himself in a losing streak over the last month-and-a-half, dropping six straight starts, including his last outing on August 13th at Salem when he allowed five runs, only two earned, in 3.2 innings of work. He has allowed three earned runs or more in five of his last six starts after doing so only five times in his first 17 outings. WORKING HARD ON REPEATING SO HE DOESN T HAVE TO REPEAT: One of Castillo s biggest priorities is consistency, both on the mound and in leading up to taking the hill. He is a meticulous preparer and has been tweaking his approach over his first three seasons. I ve worked a lot on my mechanics because I had a lot of trouble and problems with repeating my delivery, the pitcher said. I think I was so successful (last year) because (of those adjustments) so I was able to control all my pitches. PROUD OF HIS HERITAGE: Castillo has a couple pitchers he points to as inspiration. Near the top of the list is former Phillie and current Ranger Cole Hammels because of the way he goes about his business and how smooth he is. But first and foremost is Fernando Valenzuela. He s Mexican and just represented the country so well. Castillo is proud of his heritage and hopes he can represent his country as well as Valenzuela did. I am always proud to represent my country when I pitch. Here in the U.S. you face a lot of good hitters and talented players every day. But in Mexico, you need to play very well and be the best you can just to get the chance to be able to play here. The Book on Castillo (2017) At Home: 4-4, 3.88 ERA 10G/10GS On the Road: 2-6, 3.95 ERA 13G/13GS LH Opp Avg:.244 RH Opp Avg:.284 Record when he pitches: 6-10 Wilmington Record when he starts: Run Support (overall): 63 Run Support (starting): 2.5 ERA: 3.92 Season-High K s: 6, 6x (Last: 8/1/17 vs. Buies Creek Astros) Career-High K s: 11, (7/29/16 vs. Pulaski Yankees) Last Win: Potomac Nationals Last Loss: Salem Red Sox Most IP, 2017: 8.0 IP, 2x (Last: Potomac Nationals) Most IP, Career: 9.0 IP, (7/29/16 vs. Pulaski Yankees) CLOSE TO HIS CATCHERS: Castillo says he works well with his catchers. We talk a lot before the game to develop a plan so we can execute out on the field. I don t need to shake them off a lot, but sometimes I do and it s part of our plan. I like to work quickly as well to keep (hitters off balance). It helps a lot because you don t give Career Numbers hitters time to think about what pitch I am going to throw. It s all part of the big plan which you have to stick to. Year/Teams(s) W-L ERA IP SO FAR, SO GOOD: Castillo has been one of the Blue Rocks most consistent starters so far this season. Castillo 2015/Royals (DSL) has been very good, said manager Jamie Quirk. He mixes his pitches really well and hits his spots. It is his first time at this level, and you never know how a kid will respond to that, but he s done a great job. Castillo pitches 2016/Burlington to contact, sporting a.274 batting average against with the bases empty, but he also seems to be at his best in the 2017/Wilmington biggest moments. Opponents are hitting.252 versus the southpaw with runners in scoring position. Totals ALL-STAR: Castillo was so good in the first half he earned an All-Star nod. He ranked fourth in the Carolina League with a 2.80 ERA, posted a 4-3 record and allowed only 22 earned runs in 70.2 innings of work in the first half. He surrendered four earned runs once just once in the opening half, and lasted five or more innings in 11 of his 13 starts. 8 BLUE ROCKS HITTERS NOTES #11 John Brontsema [BRONT-sim-ah] INF Ht: 6 2 Wt: 185 Age: 22 B/T: R/R Lives: Santa Barbara, CA LG: 1-for-1 Homestand: 3-for-7, 2R, RBI, BB, 2SO Notes: Drafted in the 26th round of the 2016 June MLB Amateur Draft by Kansas City out of University of California Irvine. He went to the College World Series as a freshman Notes: Started the season with Lexington Legends (Low-A/South Atlantic League) -In 52 games he hit.323 with four home runs and 21 RBI. Also clubbed 12 doubles and a triple. -Posted a.416 on-base percentage during that span 2016 Notes: Spent the season with the Royals (Arizona League/Rookie) and Wilmington Blue Rocks. -Hit.343 with nine doubles, a triple and drove in 24 runs in AZL -Ranked second in the Arizona League in batting average, and third in hits and on-base percentage (.395). -Played in three games with the Blue Rocks and collected three hits in 12 at-bats. They said it: Going to the College World Series was awesome, one of the best experiences of my life. UC Irvine was a great program. They helped me get better every year. It s amazing how much better you can get year-by-year when you look back. That s the goal to continue. When you look back and you weren t better than you were last year, that s a problem. That s what UC Irvine did for me. It s a great school, great facility, and has great coaches. To be able to go the College World Series, which is everyone s dream, lives up to the hype and then some. For anyone that wants to go and check it off their bucket list, I highly suggest it...it s tough (for UC Irvine) to get recruits for some reason. They always want to go to USC or UCLA for some reason. Even with the amazing coaching and facilities at Irvine, getting those amazing prospects isn t as easy. They have to do a good job of recruiting the best players than can. Once they get there it s about creating that style of play that is consistent. If everyone plays to that style, they can be very successful when that happens. They helped me learn to be scrappy, learn to play different positions, and be that type of player so I owe a lot to what I learned there...the field (at UC Irvine) is unbelievable. Nolan Arenado comes, Albert Pujols comes, Skip Schumaker comes and they all take ground balls at our field. They say there is really no big league field that is better. That was one of the biggest draws to me. Mike Guillespe, the head coach there, actually coached my dad when he was in college. He is a legend. My dad told me you are going to learn a lot from him and I did. Continued success for Irvine year in and year out is owed to him and the coaching staff. Keston Hiura, the ninth overall pick (in the 2017 MLB Draft by the Brewers), just came from there this year and he is already killing it in Low-A...Michael Young, who played for my dad, is truly the person I idolized growing up. I tried to emulate him on the field, his swing, his defensive prowess of playing a bunch of different positions, and how he handles himself off the field. Just watching that, he is a great role model. Him and Skip Schumaker, who also played from my dad, are two great role models I ve been able to watch, interact with, text, and work with. It s been a blessing to see these guys and their careers. Now they are both retired but they still stay in contact with me. They don t have to do anything like that, but they are great people and great role models for me. #15 Chris DeVito INF Ht: 6 2 Wt: 220 Age: 22 B/T: L/R Lives: Northridge, CA LG: 3-for-4, R, 2B Homestand: 4-for-15, 2R, 2B, RBI, 3SO Notes: Selected in the 8th round of the 2016 June MLB Amateur Draft out of the University of New Mexico. Hit.375/.448/.685 with 16 home runs while playing catcher and designated hitter for the Lobos Notes: Hit back-to-back home runs at LYN 7/6-7/7. -Tied for second on team with 43 RBI in 87 games with the Rocks. -Had season-long nine-game hitting streak snapped on (.471/1/9) -Named CL Player of the Week for May 29 - June 4. Hit.462 in six games. -Hit for the cycle on WS. First cycle in career and first in the CL this season. Was team s first cycle since April 18, 1999 when Dee Brown did -Hit.295/2/15 in month of June -Has 20 multi-hit games in 87 total games with Wilmington. -Hit first-career Adv. A homer at Potomac on 5/19 (2R-HR) -Made Class-A Adv. debut on 5/11 vs. POT and went 1-for-3 with a walk and strikeout. -Played in 30 games with the Lexington Legends (Low-A/South Atlantic League). Hit.347 with 11 home runs and 38 RBI. -Led the South Atlantic League with his 11 HRs, hits (42), RBI, XBH (21) and SLG (.702) -Also was tied for third in the league with his.347 contact-clip. -In his last game with LEX on 5/8 he picked up his first-career four-hit game. (4-for-5, HR) 2016 Notes: Spent the season with the Burlington Royals (Rookie/Appalachian League) -Hit.261 with nine home runs and 50 RBI in 60 games. Led the team in both HR and was ranked second in the league in RBI. They said it: (On what led to great success in Lexington to start the season) Honestly, my teammates. My first couple of games weren t very good and my teammates knew I could do it, they had my back and I couldn t have done it without my teammates and the great coaching staff we have down there...just trying to be as consistent as possible (On what he worked on in the off-season). That s everyone s baseball goal, to be as consistent as possible...i actually know probably more guys here (in Wilmington) than I did at the beginning of the Lexington season so I m super excited. It s a great group of guys here...i loved that school (the University of New Mexico). Great school, great place to hit. Coach (Ray) Birmingham is a great head coach and knows what he is talking about with hitting. His support staff as well with Buddy Goldsmith, Ken (Jacome), the pitching coach, and Tony Cappuccilli were all great coaches and had great team environment there...(on moving from California to New Mexico) It is definitely different. It was the best place for me to go play baseball. My best friend from high school, Jared Holly, went to New Mexico first. He was a sophomore there my freshman year and he helped me in a lot of ways to make the transition easier...(on transition from catcher to first base.)...i absolutely love it. Catching is rough, I respect those guys for being back there. Those guys grind and put their bodies on the line. Being at first is definitely a lot easier on the body... Absolutely not, I ve never done that before (on hitting for the cycle). I was just super happy to get the win and happy to contribute. (If cycle was in his mind after the triple) A little bit, but not much. I know (triples) are incredibly hard to get and I m not a big triples guy. I was just happy to get it done early and didn t have to worry about it. I m mostly happy we got the win. #34 Roman Collins OF Ht: 6 2 Wt: 210 Age: 23 B/T: L/L Lives: Boca Raton, FL LG: 0-for-4, SO Homestand: 2-for-15, R,2RBI, 3SO Notes: Drafted in the 5th Round of the 2015 June Amateur Draft by Kansas City out of Florida Atlantic Univ. Considered one of the best pure hitters in organization last season. Turned down opportunities to play college football. Father played football at West Virginia University Notes: Picked up second game-winning hit of the season with GW RBI single in 10th inning against Frederick on 8/6. -Hit walk-off RBI double in 15th inning vs. BC on 6/8. -Picked up fourth three-hit game of the season on 7/12 vs. LYN -Had 13-game on-base streak end on 4/20 vs. WS. -The streak was tied as the longest on-base streak on the team with D.J. Burt and was the fourthlongest in Carolina League at the time. -First on team with 49 RBI, tied for first amongst active members on team with five triples, first with 24 doubles, second on team amongst active players in runs with 46 and fourth on the team with seven home runs. -Has posted a pair of eight-game hitting streaks this season. Posted two, nine-gamers in 2014 with Idaho Falls Notes: Spent the season between the Lexington Legends (Low-A/South Atlantic League) and Wilmington Blue Rocks (Adv. A/Carolina League). -Hit.242 with nine home runs and 41 RBI in 111 total games between the two teams. -Started the season with the Blue Rocks hitting.222/0/5 in 21 contests. -Played 90 games with the Legends and hit.246/9/36. -Collected three, four-hit games last year. -Hit.249 vs RHP and.213 vs LHP -Hit.275 on the road (208 ABs) and.207 at home (218 ABs) -Spent the winter in the Australian Winter League with the Melbourne Aces and ranked among league s leaders in total bases (tied for second), batting average (third), hits (third) and runs (tied for fourth) Notes: Spent the season with the Idaho Falls Chukars (Rookie/Pioneer League) -Hit.292 with four home runs and 45 RBI in 68 games. -Ranked tied for fourth among Pioneer League batters in walks (36) during his pro debut. -Finished third on the Chukars in hits (78), second in doubles (18) and fourth in triples (6). -Was the second toughest batter to strike out in the league (every 9.03 at-bats). They said it: I had a blast in Australia. We ended up having a really good team and really good group of guys down in Melbourne, Australia. I had a really good time and got a lot better and made improvements... Living there was actually not as different as I thought it would be. There s a lot of US pop culture there so that wasn t much different. As far as baseball, there was actually a big difference. There s a lot of Japanese guys there so the style of play, especially the pitching is a lot different. There s a lot more splitters than change ups and I also saw a lot more soft throwing lefties which helped me out a lot... I played football growing up and I actually almost ended up playing football in college instead of baseball. I had a few more opportunities in football than baseball but baseball has always been my passion and it ended up working out... Definitely the fans. We have a good group of fans here and they like to come out and watch. I like it here. #26 Brandon Downes OF Ht: 6 3 Wt: 195 Age: 24 B/T: R/R Lives: South Plainfield, NJ LG: 0-for-3, 2SO Homestand: 4-for-13, 2R, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, 3SO Notes: Selected in the 7th round of the 2014 June MLB Amateur Draft by Kansas City out of University of Virginia. In 2011 he was selected by Boston in the 43rd round of the First-Year Player Draft, but chose to attend the University of Virginia. Sister Kelly played softball at Drexel University Notes: Has hit homers in back-to-back games for second time this season. W-S) -Drew two-out, bases loaded walk for walk-off win vs. LYN 7/14. Was third straight walk-off win for WIL. -Earned CL Player of the Week for the week of June 26-July 2 (.455/3/5) -Has hit 12 home runs in his 57 games played this season while 28 of his 52 hits this year are for extra-bases. -Tied for first on team in HR (12). -Recorded multi-homer game on 7/2 vs. SAL with a pair of solo home runs. -Joins Chase Vallot as only other Blue Rocks with multi-homer game this season. -Rejoined the team on and hit a HR after beign placed on DL for second time this year. (Hip) -Hit in five of his first seven games when he returned from the from DL the first time. (7-for-26, 3HR, 6RBI) -Started the year with Wilmington. Played in five games and hit.278 with two triples and a home run before breaking a bone in his hand. Was placed on disabled list on April Notes: Spent the season with the Wilmington Blue Rocks (Adv. A/Carolina League) and Omaha StormChasers (AAA/Pacific Coast League). -Hit.230 with 12 home runs and 66 RBI in 130 games with Wilmington. -Ranked second among Royals farmhands with 36 doubles, 34 of which came at Wilmington, where he ranked fifth in the Carolina League in two-base hits. -Played in five games with Omaha and hit.308 with a pair of doubles in 13 at-bats. -Had 26 multi-hit games last season. 2015: Spent the season with the Lexington Legends (Low-A/South Atlantic League) Wilmington Blue Rocks. -Hit.251 with 14 home runs and 59 RBI in 106 games with Lexington. -Ranked second on team in doubles, home runs and RBI for Lexington. -Played in just one game in Wilmington and in his lone at-bat struck out. -Fell a home run shy of the cycle on 5/15. (5-for-5 3 2B, 3B, RBI) 2014: Spent the season with the Idaho Falls Chukars (Rookie/Pioneer League) -Hit.308 with three home runs and 23 RBI in 41 games. Finished fifth on the team with 13 doubles. They said it: I definitely think it will be a good adjustment for me. I went through the whole first year struggling a little bit. I know the stadiums, the teams, maybe some of the same players are coming back. I think it gives me a little bit of an edge on other guys in the league. I m excited...honestly I went in there carefree. If I get out, it s supposed to happen because I m the guy from A-Ball so I took it the right way. I just went out there and felt comfortable and enjoyed myself. I honestly had no pressure on myself and that s the way I should play here too which is what I m going to try to do. It was enjoyable... The postgame spread was unbelievable. You get big leaguers buying the spread and it is steak and lobster for dinner which was very awesome. The field was incredible. There was a ton more fans I m not saying we have a bad fan base, but it s a step away from the big leagues and kids are going crazy for you. It was cool to be around older guys who have been there or guys that are close to being there. The league itself was very cool. I met one of my teammates from Virginia, Chris Taylor, he got traded to the Dodgers and we were playing them during the six games I was there and it was good to see him. It s a whole different atmosphere. There s 35-year-old guys pitching to you and you do one thing wrong and they know what that weakness it, they can repeatedly make that pitch so it definitely was a big jump but definitely awesome...it s definitely a big thing (playing near hometown). There s a lot of ups and downs, especially if you get homesick, which I haven t gotten that much in my career so far. It s definitely a blessing to have your family come out.
