1 The 2019 Cubs scored at least 10 runs in 5 of their first 10 games, something they had not accomplished since the birth of the National League in But they lost 2 of those games, at Texas, on March 31, and at Milwaukee, on April 5. If you are a Cubs fan of a certain age, as I am, you can recall all too many games over the years in which the Cubs scored in double digits, yet still failed to win. Many of them came on days when the wind was blowing out at Wrigley Field, and any ball hit in the air seemed as likely as not to wind up in the bleachers or beyond. Like me, you may remember the loss to the Phillies in 1976, in which Mike Schmidt hit 4 home runs. Or an loss to the Pirates the previous year, in which WGN's 10 o'clock news set the highlights to the "1812 Overture." But here is something absolutely remarkable about the Cubs' losses to the Rangers and Brewers this season: Going into 2019, the Cubs had lost exactly ONE game in which they scored at least 10 runs since... May 29, nearly 13 years ago! After losing to the Braves at home, 13-12, on May 28, 2006, the Cubs went a ridiculous when scoring in double digits! They won the last 8 times they did so in Then won all 10 in And all 19 in And all 12 in And all 11 in And all 10 in And all 7 in And all 2 (yes, just 2) in And all 3 in And all 5 in And all 10 in And then they won their first 10 double-digit games in 2017, extending the streak to 107 consecutive wins when scoring 10 or more runs. The streak ended Aug. 17, 2017, with a loss at home to Cincinnati. Since then, through their 12-4 win at Texas on Opening Day of 2019, the Cubs had won another 25 straight games when scoring at least 10 times, resulting in that mind-boggling mark of The loss to the Braves was the ONLY double-digit loss for the Cubs in And they had won all 11 double-digit games in So, after 7 games of the 2019 season, the Cubs already had lost as many games when they scored 10 times, 2, as they had from 2005 through full seasons! The 2004 loss, to Cincinnati on April 18, was their 4th double-digit game of the young season. The Cubs won 16 straight double-digit games the rest of that year. That means, from April 19, 2004 through March 28, 2019, nearly 15 years, the Cubs played 160 games in which they scored 10 or more runs. And they went in those games!
