Orlando reached on a one-out single to right and then stole second base to get into scoring position with two away...duffy was outstanding once again, working the 6.0 innings allowing just a run on three hits with a walk and three K s, though his pitch count rose quickly to 101 at the time of his departure...ryan Madson, Wade Davis, Greg Holland and Kelvin Herrera held serve over the four relief innings, each facing the minimum three in a frame to set the stage for the heroics...the win, coupled with the Yankees late comeback over the Twins in Minneapolis, returned KC s margin in the A.L. ROUGH NIGHT VS. BUCS--Yordano was charged with a season-high six runs in 4.0 innings, plus one batter Monday night, in a 10-7 loss to Pittsburgh...he allowed 10 hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in his second outing since coming off the disabled list...after setting the side down in order in the first, the Pirates erupted for four runs in the second, collecting five-straight hits capped by Travis Ishikawa s two-run double...then, after pitching out of a bases loaded jam in the third, Yordano allowed another run in the fourth on Andrew McCutchen s RBI double...after going 7.0 innings in four-straight starts during the month of May, Ventura has pitched a total of 15.0 innings over his last four outings, dating back to June 6...the 24-year old was optioned to Triple-A following last Monday s start, but was recalled the next day when Jason Vargas went on the D.L. SECOND INNING BLUES--Yordano has retired the side in order in the first inning of his last two starts, however his second-inning troubles have continued...ventura has allowed 14 earned runs in the second inning of his 14 starts for a 9.00 ERA, while opponents are batting.345 (20-for-58) in that that frame...comparitively, he s held opponents to a.233 average (41-for-176) and a 4.28 ERA after the second this year. THE DUFFSTER--Danny Duffy continued his strong post-disabled list work last night with 6.0 innings of one-run, three-hit ball, though his 101 pitches thrown prevented him from being around for a decision...since coming off the shelf on June 24 after a bout of left biceps tendinitis, Duff has gone 2-1 with a 2.15 ERA in six starts, allowing nine earned runs in 37.2 innings...he has been just short of spectacular in his last three assignments, going 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA, giving up only two earned runs in 20.0 innings while limiting the opposition to a collecting.194 batting average (13-for-67).
