The sophomore lefty worked as the Saturday starter for eight weeks before moving into a midweek role. Hensley has earned six quality starts. In his last appearance against Samford, He worked 4.0 innings, allowing only four hits and one earned run, striking out three batters while not allowing a walk. A Little History -- UNC Asheville UNC Asheville and UNCG have played in 28 games over the years, with the Spartans holding a 20-8 advantage in that time. The last ten games have all been played in Greensboro, with the last contest in Asheville in 1996 when both teams were members of the Big South Conference. The Spartans defeated the Bulldogs in all three games of the 1996 season. Scouting the Bulldogs The Bulldogs enter the midweek game having played a game on three-straight days. UNC Asheville moved their weekend series with Longwood up a day after inclement weather didn t allow the game to be played on Friday night. The Bulldogs wrapped up their Big South series on Monday evening before taking on the Furman Paladins on Tuesday night. Prior to the three games this week, UNC Asheville is on the season. In their last ten games, the Bulldogs are 4-6. UNC Asheville enters the week with a record. Joe Tietjen leads the Bulldog offense. Tietjen has hit for a.359 average in 44 games. The junior outfielder has hit nine home runs and leads the team with 13 doubles. Tietjen has also driven in a team-high 48 runs on the year, while swiping a team-high nine bases. Lucas Owens has started 40 games this year and has earned a.283 average. The senior utility player has hit 10 doubles and one triple while drivin gin 14 runs. Owens has scored 27 runs. Pete Guy has scored a team high 39 runs while starting in 44 games. Listed as a catcher on the UNC Asheville roster, Guy hit a team-high 10 home runs, and driven in 27. Carmine Pagano has started 40 games this year, while hitting for a.242 average. The freshman infielder has connected for seven extra-base hits, as well as scoring 24 runs. The Bulldogs will start have yet to name a starter for Wednesday s game, as they will play games on Monday and Tuesday of this week leading up to the matchup with UNCG. Eric Whitecavage leads the Bulldogs with 22 appearances. Whitecavage has earned three saves in 21.2 innings this season. With the wins, UNCG remains in first place in the Southern Conference. The 84 stolen bases are the most since 2003, when UNCG swiped 101 during the year. The school record for stolen bases in a single season was set in 1997 at 169, when the Spartan qualified for the NCAA Regional in Baton Rouge, La. That season UNCG played in 62 games, averaging 2.73 stolen bases per game. On the Brink UNCG has had one of the most productive offensive seasons in school history in Currently, the 2016 Spartans have set records in triples, having hit 30 aleady this year. The previous record was 27, set in The program record for doubles in a season is at 131, and this year s team has already racked up 126, most in the nation. The Navy and Gold needs just 32 hits to break the team record for hits in a season, 650, set in 1997 when the Spartans reached the NCAA Regionals in Baton Rouge, La. Spartans Sweep SoCon Awards Redshirt Senior L.J. Kalawaia and Freshman Matt Frisbee swept the Pitcher and Player of the Week awards for their efforts April Kalawaia was also named to Collegiate Baseball s National Players of the Week. Kalawaia is the second Spartan to receive Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week Honors after Andrew Wantz (Holly Springs, N.C./Holly Springs) took home the award for the week of Mar. 28th-April 4th. Kalawaia hit.600 and slugged with 18 RBI in five games on the week, while Frisbee pitched a complete-game shutout as the Spartans went 3-2, splitting a midweek home-andhome with Wake Forest and taking two of three from Furman on the road. Frisbee turned in the first shutout of his career Sunday, allowing just two hits and four walks as the Spartans cruised to the 14-0 win, which finished in seven innings due to the 10-run rule. The freshman, who struck out five and didn t allow an extra-base hit, settled in after issuing all four walks in the first three innings. SoCon Pitcher of the Month Chad Sykes was named SoCon Pitcher of the Month for the month of March. This is the first time the sophomore right-handed pitcher has earned the honor. UNCG finished March with a league-best 14-5 record. Sykes went 2-1 and recorded a save to go with his 2.20 ERA in 10 appearances during the month. The sophomore right-hander allowed only six hits; one for extra bases and nine walks through 16.1 innings, good for a 0.92 WHIP. Sykes allowed just four earned runs on the month, striking out 17 batters. Six of Sykes appearances went at least two innings, starting with a pair of scoreless frames against Coastal Carolina on Mar. 11 to earn his second save of the season. He noted at least one strikeout in each of his last eight appearances and did not allow a hit in his last seven contests. He also posted six straight scoreless outings, earning wins of Marist and Georgetown with two innings of work against each. Overall, Sykes has worked in 23 games, throwing in 38.0 innings. During his time on the hill, Sykes has earned a 2.61 ERA and has held opponents to a.179 average against him. Sykes has struck out 45 hitters on the year., including one in 18 straight appearances. Pitcher of the Week and National Awards Andrew Wantz earned a multitude of honors for his performance the week of Mar. 28th- Apr. 3rd. Wantz was named SoCon Pitcher of the Week, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Pitcher of the Week and was one of Collegiate Baseball s seven National Players of the Week. Wantz finished the weekend 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA in nine innings over three appearances on the week. Striking out 17 batters. Wantz opened the week starting against North Carolina A&T, striking out six and earning the win. In two appearances against VMI, Wantz struck out 11 batters in 5.0 innings pitched.

His 27 appearances leads the team and is 14th in the nation. Early Success 2016 UNCG baseball had one of the best starts in program history with a 20-6 record heading into SoCon play. The 20 wins prior to the conference season is the most-ever for a UNCG squad, and the.769 winning percentage is the highest winning percentage entering conference play since 2003, when the Spartans were 12-0 entering conference. This season, UNCG has earned five series sweeps, while winning ten total series. Those sweeps and series wins don t take into account the Coastal Carolina Invitational in which UNCG defeated Illinois twice, and split a pair of games with the host Chanticleers. With two nonconference games remaining, UNCG has a chance to tie the school-record for nonconference wins in a season with the record being set 1997, with 23 nonconference wins. The Spartans currently have 22 nonconference wins, with one remaining. 10 s the Magic Number In 33 of 49 games this season, UNCG has racked up at least 10 hits. During that time, the Spartans have gone 28-5 in games that they have at least 10 hits. When not reaching the 10 hit plateau, UNCG is Eight times UNCG has connected for nine hits. The season-low for hits in a game is six which has occurred only twice. Start Hot, Stay Hot Currently, the UNCG offense currently leads the NCAA with a.353 team batting average. UNCW trails the Spartans by an impressive18 points. UNCG also leads the NCAA in hits, doubles per game, doubles, triples, slugging percentage, sacrifice flies and on-base percentage. The Spartan offense is led by a pair of hitters who are above the.400 mark. L.J. Kalawaia (Wailuku, Hawai i/ohlone College) and Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC) have hit.400, and.406 respectively. Spitznagel is second in the NCAA with 82 hits, Kalawaia is 11th with 76. Collin Woody (Tampa, Fla./College of Central Florida) is 18th in the nation with 74 hits, but leads the NCAA with 11 sacrifice flies, while placing second in the NCAA with 63 RBI. Kalawaia ranks ninth in the NCAA with 58 RBI, as well as leading UNCG with 22 stolen bases. Four different players rank in the top 20 in runs scored this year. Kalawaia ranks fourth with 58, Spitznagel is ninth at 54, Dillon Stewart (Dunn, N.C./Brunswick CC) and Woody are tied at 19th at 53. Stewart and Woody are tied for the team-lead with ten home runs each. Jake Kusz (Durham, N.C./Riverside) is second on the squad with seven home runs on the year. UNCG has four players in the top 42 of RBI producers, the most of any NCAA Division I institution. UNCG has nine players hitting above the.300 plateau who have played in at least 22 games this season. The Spartans first games outside of North Carolina were in the Coastal Carolina Invitational, where UNCG finished 3-1. In their first road trip of the year, UNCG went 3-2 with two victories over Illinois and splitting a pair of games with Coastal Carolina. The Spartans also dropped the midweek game at UNCW,

Illinois was a 2015 Super Regional participant and Coastal Carolina has made the postseason in 12 seasons since Home Cooking UNCG is currently 24-3 in games played at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Spartans will play 30 of the 56 regular season games at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. Last season, UNCG only managed 13 wins in front of the home fans. Johnny Bench Watch List UNCG catcher Jake Kusz was named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List earlier this season. The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced the official watch list on March 8th. The watch list will be narrowed down on May 18th before the final vote occurs during the College World Series. 75 players were named to the list, four of which play for SoCon teams. This season, Kusz has hit for a.277 average, with 13 doubles and seven home runs. The junior catcher has driven in 42 runs on the year. Defensively, Kusz has allowed just six passed balls this season, while being able to catch eight runners attempting to steal bases. Kusz has made only two errors this season, and has a team-best.995 fielding percentage for players with over 100 chances. Oh Captain, My Captain Head Coach Link Jarrett announced the captains of the 2016 UNCG Baseball team prior to the start of the season. L.J. Kalawaia, Collin Woody, Hunter Smith and Jake Kusz have earned the right to be called captain this season. The four receive this honor after a vote conducted of the UNCG baseball team. Kalawaia and Woody are each seniors, while Smith and Kusz are juniors. Kalawaia received a redshirt after suffering a preseason injury in Smith is a redshirt junior, having sat out the 2015 season due to NCAA transfer rules. Return to Action The Spartans return to action on Friday, May 13th as they travel to Cullowhee, N.C. for a three game Southern Conference series with the Western Carolina Catamounts.
