1 MEDIA INFORMATION Salem Red Sox (15-10, 1st, -- GB) Carolina League Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox vs. Wilmington Blue Rocks (9-16, 5th, 6.0 GB) Carolina League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals Game No. 26 Home Game No. 13 Frawley Stadium Wednesday, May 3, :35 p.m. BLUE ROCKS BREAKDOWN HOME: 5-7 AWAY: 4-9 STREAK: W 1 LAST 5: 2-3 LAST 10: 3-7 TEN UNANSWERED: An offensive explosion by the Wilmington Blue Rocks led to their first win of the season over the Salem Red Sox on Tuesday in a 10-2 thumping at Frawley Stadium. Seven different Blue Rocks collected a hit while four different hitters drove in a run. Elier Hernandez paced the offensive onslaught with a three-hit performance and Nicky Lopez drove in three runs in the victory. The 10 runs set a singlegame high for the Blue Rocks and the 12 total hits were the second-most in a contest this year for Wilmington. DOUBLE DIGITS EQUALS TWICE THE FUN: The double-digit run total marked the first time this season the Blue Rocks scored more than nine runs in a game. It had been 54 games since the Rocks last tallied double-digit runs. Ironically it had most recently occurred against the Salem Red Sox, in a 13-2 win over the Sox on August 3. The Blue Rocks also set new single-game highs with most triples in a game (2, Lopez, Hernandez) runs in an inning (5, in the fifth) and most strikeouts by a reliever (8, by Gabe Cramer). MILLER AND HERNANDEZ ARE HEATING UP: Anderson Miller extended his on-base streak to 17 games on Monday. It is the longest of his professional career, topping his 16-gamer last season with the Low-A Lexington Legends. It marks the longest on-base streak by a Blue Rock hitter since Hunter Dozier reached in 18 straight games in Roman Collins and D.J. Burt both had 13-game on-base streaks earlier this season. Miller hit the game-winning home run on Sunday, his second of the season, which ties Roman Collins for second-most on the team. Last season Miller hit just three homers with Wilmington in 144 at-bats. He is one of three returning Blue Rocks who have already surpassed last year s homer total. Collins has two so far this season after hitting none with the Blue Crew in 2016 and Elier Hernandez hit three long balls in the season s opening month. Last season Hernandez hit only two in 500 at bats. On Tuesday he had two triples, a double, a run scored and two RBI. The third-year Blue Rock leads the team in doubles, homers, RBI and slugging percentage. CLOSE GAMES ARE CRUSHING THE BLUE CREW: The Blue Rocks have played in a Carolina League-high 14 one-run games so far in No other club in the ten-team loop has played in more than 10 single-score affairs. Unfortunately for Wilmington, the Rocks are just 4-10 in such contests. Wilmington has also played in five extra innings affairs already in three more than any other Carolina League club. The Rocks are just 1-4 in those games not completed in regulation. Wilmington is also only 4-6 when scoring the game s first run and is somehow only 3-3 when scoring the last run in a contest. THEY SAID IT, MANAGER JAMIE QUIRK: First of all, Christian Castillo was great. It was a shaky first inning, we didn t know if he was going to get out of the first because he threw 30-some pitches and that s a red flag. He got us worried a bit, but he settled down and was great after that. He stopped the damage at two runs to the best hitting team in the league and got in a grove. Then our offense was excellent. Guys were solid. We executed situational hitting, took some walks when they were there. The key for me were the two-out RBIs. (Nicky) Lopez had three, two-out RBIs and Elier (Hernandez) had two. Those are back-breakers when you score with two outs and that kept us going...it was great to (have some) success, because they work awful hard and you like to see some results every once in a while. It s tough going out there every day, working as hard as they do and then they are battling for results. It s nice that we had a relaxed game after the second and third. To see guys hitting to the opposite field means they are doing things correctly. They are going with pitchers, having an idea of what pitchers are doing to them and staying on the ball. When you do that, you can string hits together with good at bats. That s one thing we haven t done a lot of is string hits together and we did that tonight...it worked out perfectly with (Gabe) Cramer because I wanted to finish that game using one pitcher and we were able to do that. He was phenomenal, three innings and eight strikeouts. That was huge that we didn t have to use anybody else and we have another game tomorrow going against Salem. With Griffin (Foster) going, he has a little revenge factor since he got roughed up against them last time so I m looking forward to seeing how he comes out (Wednesday)... (Nicky Lopez) is a baseball player and that s the best way I like to explain it. He is full of energy and makes every play at short. He is the prototypical lead-off hitter right now. He loves being on the field and loves playing the game. Just thinking, a year ago he was still in college, and the jump he has made and the success he has had is a tribute to him. Obviously he has talent, that s why he got drafted and is playing. The organization saw talent, they skipped him from Rookie ball to Advanced Single-A which is a big jump and he stepped right in. All he knows is he is playing baseball and he loves it...well I hope so (on changing the momentum with this win). They swept us over there but we were leading both games that they walked off, so we can play with them. We should have had (the opener) but they got us late, but we know we can play with them. Today s Starters SAL: RHP Travis Lakins (4-0, 3.08 ERA) vs. WIL: LHP Foster Griffin (2-2, 3.60 ERA) Foster Griffin was the second, first-round pick of the Kansas City Royals in the 2014 draft and the 28th selection overall that year. He was taken the same season the Royals grabbed right-hander Brandon Finnegan, who pitched with the Rocks in 2014, and then later that campaign in the World Series. Finnegan is no longer in the organization, however, going to Cincinnati in the Johnny Cueto deal in Griffin is, and the Royals still carry high hopes for his future. The 29th-ranked prospect in the Kansas City system, according to Baseball America, is hoping his Advanced-A experience will mirror his one in Low-A. Griffin spent all of 2015 at Low-A Lexington, where he endured an up-and-down campaign. He had an ERA north of seven and allowed 75 hits in only 58 innings pitched over the season s first three months. But he turned things around in his second year with the Legends, posting a 3.38 ERA in Moreover, not known as a strikeout pitcher, Griffin fanned 29 in 37.1 innings pitched, earning a mid-may promotion to Wilmington. There he struggled to make the adjustment, going 5-10 with a 6.23 ERA with the Rocks. Drafted out of high school, the Orlando, Florida native is still only 21-years-old, and scouts rave about his smooth delivery, and potential to have pinpoint command. He has pitched 25 innings so far this season and has yielded just two earned runs in 24 of those frames, but surrendered eight scores in the second inning of his only start against the Red Sox on April 17. Travis Lakins gets the ball tonight for the Salem Red Sox. Lakins was selected in the sixth round (171st overall) of the 2015 draft by Boston out of Ohio State University. In two seasons with the Buckeyes Lakins went 5-7 with a 3.28 ERA (55 ER/151.0 IP) and 139 strikeouts in 40 appearances--17 of them starts. Those numbers and his raw talent earned him an above-slot $320,000 signing bonus. The Ohio native was a great athlete before arriving in Columbus, earning All-Conference honors three times in both basketball and baseball at Franklin High School. Lakins started his professional career with a bang, making his debut in Game One of the 2015 Gulf Coast League Finals, fanning one in a hitless frame. He then went to the Lowell Spinners for the final week of the season, making one start and tossing two scoreless frames while striking out three. The six-foot-one right-hander went 6-3 with a 5.93 ERA in 19 games with Salem last season before a stress fracture in the tip of his right elbow--an injury that would require three months of rest and rehab, but not surgery--ended his season. Scouts love his ability to throw all three of his pitches (fastball, change and curve) consistently for strikes. Lakins has made three career starts against the Rocks, allowing 12 runs on 16 hits and six walks in 14.1 combined frames Regular-Season Series: WIL vs. SAL Date Site Result WP LP Save 4-17 SAL L, 11-2 Kent (1-0) Griffin 0-1) 4-18 SAL L, 6-5 Bautista (1-0) Marte (0-1) 4-19 SAL L, 7-6 Poyner (2-0) Machado (1-2) 5-1 WIL L, 4-3 F/10 Weems (1-1) Machado (1-3) Kelley (1) 5-2 WIL W, 10-2 Castillo (1-2) Jimenez (3-1) Cramer (1) 5-3 WIL 6-15 WIL 6-16 WIL 6-17 WIL 6-18 WIL 6-22 SAL 6-23 SAL 6-24 SAL 6-25 SAL 6-30 WIL 7-1 WIL 7-2 WIL 7-3 WIL 7-24 WIL 7-25 WIL 7-26 WIL 8-11 SAL 8-12 SAL 8-13 SAL 8-25 SAL 8-26 SAL 8-27 SAL Upcoming Probable Starters and Schedule Thursday, May Down East, 7:00 p.m. RHP Scott Blewett (0-2, 3.95 ERA) vs. RHP Emerson Martinez (2-2, 2.86 ERA) WGLS-FM 89.7 Friday, May Down East, 5:00 p.m. LHP Emilio Ogando (1-0, 5.47 ERA) vs. LHP Wes Benjamin (1-2, 6.41 ERA) WGLS-FM 89.7 Saturday, May Down East, 6:00 p.m. RHP A.J. Like Wilmington s skipper in Jamie Quirk, Oliver was a catcher and was drafted in the 1983 MLB Draft in the second round by the Cincinnati Reds. He was a member of the Reds team that defeated the powerful Oakland Athletics in the 1990 World Series. He went on to spend 13 seasons in the big with the Reds, Brewers, Tigers, Mariners, Pirates, Yankees and Red Sox. He played in nearly 1,100 games and posted a.247 batting average to go along with 102 homers and 476 RBI. After a 13-year hiatus from baseball, Oliver returned and became the manager of the Lowell Spinners in He spent two years with the Short-Season Class A affiliate and led the team to a composite record. He was then promote to Salem in The 2017 Salem squad has a handful of Boston s top prospects. 19-yearold Roniel Raudes is the highest ranked prospect on the team, tabbed as the sixth-best prospect in the Red Sox farm system according to Baseball America. He was named the Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2016 and posted an 11-6 record with a solid 3.65 ERA in 24 starts in Low-A Greenville. Offensively, the Sox have Josh Ockimey at first base. The slugging first baseman clubbed 18 home runs which was second-most on the farm while pacing the South Atlantic League in walks (88). He paced Greenville s offense in multiple offensive categories including home runs, walks, games played and doubles. He enters the season as the No. 10 prospect. Michael Chavis is ranked as the 11th-best prospect on the pipeline. He had a great start to the year hitting north of.350 with three home runs and 14 RBI in 15 games. However, a thumb injury derailed his season and was unable to play the majority of Other prospects that have received attention by Baseball America that will be featured in Salem in 2017 is Gerson Bautista who has the best fastball in the system. Bautista spent time with the Lowell Spinners a year ago and averaged a strikeout per inning. Behind the plate, Austin Rei is considered to be the best defensive catching prospect and gunned nearly 40% of would-be-base-stealers in Greenville last year. Like Wilmington, Salem has a player on their team that has MLB bloodlines. Tate Matheny, son of St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny makes the jump from Low-A Greenville after hitting a respectable.277 in 105 games which earned him a selection on the South Atlantic All-Star team. Tate was a fourth-round pick by the Red Sox in 2015 out of Missouri State. Along with the top prospects, Salem has 14 returners in Familiar faces for the Blue Crew are Matt Kent who etched his name in the Salem record books as the lefty tossed 156 innings last year which led the Carolina League and also set a new, single-season high. Another familiar hurler Wilmington will see is Yankory Pimentel who posted nine win and a 3.12 ERA in 32 appearances. With the addition to Buies Creek and Down East, Salem has shifted to the Northern Division after playing in the Southern Division. Last season, the Blue Rocks and Red Sox battled 20 times in inter-division play with Salem taking the head-to-head match up This year, the two foes will play within the Northern Division and meet an astounding 27 times.

He was taken the same season the Royals grabbed right-hander Brandon Finnegan, who pitched with the Rocks in 2014, and then later that campaign in the World Series. FIRST OPENING DAY NOD: Getting the ball on Opening Night can produce butterflies in even the most hardened veteran. But ask any pitcher and they ll tell you their first nod in an opener is the most emotional, and 2017 was Foster Griffin s first Opening Night start as a pro. It was a huge honor., Griffin says. I was the only returning starter to the rotation and I didn t have the best year last season. But after they named me the Opening Day starter I really started to notice how much they emphasize it on MLB Network for the big leagues. It makes you realize that even for the minor league level and in A-ball it s an honor. It was my first one, so there were some initial nerves getting out there, but when I threw pitch one, I kind of got locked in, adrenaline kicked in and I was able to block everything out and just play baseball. He pitched fantastic, fanning eight and walking none in six innings of one-run ball against Potomac. GRIFFIN ON HIS CURVE: I was probably 14 or so just fiddling around, and that s when you re supposed to start throwing a real curveball instead of that little league roller, and I was messing around with different grips and couldn t find one that felt right or felt comfortable. Then suddenly I found one that felt right. It s one that I haven t met many people that throw it the way I do; I put it in the back of my palm, it s kind of like a spike, a spike-curveball, and it s really more of a self-taught pitch. I was just fiddling around and figured out what feels comfortable and that s what s important, going with what is comfortable. That s most true with the off-speed stuff because if you re going to throw it with confidence, you have to be comfortable with it. Still, despite a million signing bonus offer, Griffin said the decision to turn pro wasn t cut and dry. It wasn t an easy decision by any means. I loved the coaching staff (at Ole Miss) when I visited there. It was Year/Teams(s) W-L ERA IP an easy commitment for me. I had it set up that one of my best buddies (Tate Blackman) that I played with in 2014/Burlington travel ball was going to be my roommate. So it was a really hard decision, but where I got picked and when it was the Royals organization that picked, it was a tough chance to pass up. My agent and everyone had noth-2015/lexingtoing but incredible things to say about the organization. Time has not altered Griffin s mind set. He still has nothing but incredible things to say about the organization which has taught him how to be a pro. I m glad I 2016/Wilmington (signed) because I ve learned a lot. That s not saying I wouldn t have learned a lot at Ole Miss, but I think I 2016/Lexington definitely benefited from the decision in my career. 2017/Wilmington ADJUSTMENTS IN 2017: Griffin says his two biggest things this season are to pitch more aggressively and to get deeper into games. I struggled last year giving our team a chance to win games and getting through innings. I m trying to give the bullpen a little more rest and reach the sixth or seventh inning and give our Totals team a chance to win. The lefty thinks he gave the jump from Low-A to Advanced-A too much importance in his head. He realized during the offseason that the hitters are better in the CL, but you ve still got to attack them. Griffin is confident if he sticks with that approach in 2017 he ll be able to get ahead in more counts. They said it: Working with the coaches down in Spring Training and learning the game more. That s my game, speed and getting on and creating havoc on the bases. I told myself I had two pitches and then I m out.... It took its own form. I pretty much just rolled with it. I ended the season in Idaho and pretty much knew about my streak but when I started last season in Lexington I didn t even think about it. (On keeping streak alive) I think developing as a player each year and getting better each year helped.... I think defense is the number one key to me. That helps wins games. I know hitting does too but if you have pitching and defense, that can help make a run in the playoffs.... Working with the coaches down in Spring Training and learning the game more. That s my game, speed and getting on and creating havoc on the base. I told myself I had two pitches and then I m out.... I know Brandon Phillips doesn t really run like that but I compare myself to him. Jose Altuve as well. #16 Nate Esposito C Ht: 5 11 Wt: 195 Age: 23 B/T: R/R Lives: Granite Bay, CA LG: 1-for-4, SO Homestand: 1-for-4, SO Notes: Selected in the 33rd round of the 2015 June MLB Amateur Draft by Kansas City out of Concordia University-Portland (Portland, OR) Notes: Picked up his first multi-hit game of the season while throwing out a pair of base runners on SAL. -Collected first multi-rbi game of the season on BC -Leads team in caught stealing percentage (41%) Notes: Spent the season with the Burlington Royals (Rookie/Appalachian League) -Hit.317 with two home runs and 17 RBI in 29 games. -Did not commit and error behind the dish. (250 innings) -Threw out 28% of would-be base stealers Notes: Spent the season with the Royals (Rookie/Arizona League) and hit.250 with five RBI in 27 games. Made just one error behind the plate. They said it: I would say definitely attitude was huge for me. Learning how to take each at-bat at a time and move forward from the negative things and take the positives of each at-bat and that s helped me relax at the plate.... No. Absolutely not. I never had seven RBIs before. It was really cool. I guess the coolest thing about it was that I had no idea how many RBIs I had until the game was over and my teammates were telling me. I think that s the only reason why it happened. If I went in to each at-bat saying I already have four, let me get another one RBI, it wouldn t have happened for me and messed with my attitude. I don t think it would ve been as successful as a game.... I think that s the reason why I m here. I really pride myself on defense. I try to come out every day to run a pitching staff, keep the ball in front of me and not let runners advance. I think that s what I pride myself on the most.... I don t have a specific catcher. I can give you one guy. I was a big Jorge Posada fan of the New York Yankees. Just the way he was so agile behind the plate and lanky. He wasn t a big stocky dude because I m not like that either, but I liked the way he moved behind the plate for sure.... Definitely an energizer bunny for these guys, I think I provide a lot of energy on the field, in the bullpen or the clubhouse. Someone that can provide energy day in and day out because we all know the season can get long. They said it: I had a blast in Australia. We ended up having a really good team and really good group of guys down in Melbourne, Australia. I had a really good time and got a lot better and made improvements.... Living there was actually not as different as I thought it would be. There s a lot of US pop culture there so that wasn t much different. As far as baseball, there was actually a big difference. There s a lot of Japanese guys there so the style of play, especially the pitching is a lot different. There s a lot more splitters than change ups and I also saw a lot more soft throwing lefties which helped me out a lot.... I played football growing up and I actually almost ended up playing football in college instead of baseball. I had a few more opportunities in football than baseball but baseball has always been my passion and it ended up working out.... Definitely the fans. We have a good group of fans here and they like to come out and watch. (.981) -Recorded 17 multi-hit games which was tied for team lead. -Had more walks (35) than strikeouts (30). -Hit better against LHP (.316) than against RHP (.270) They said it: On his success last season: I had a little more freedom. The stuff I learned in college ball really helped me mature as a player and really help me deal with adversity. Kind of preserve through the slumps you go through and know how to handle those and I think that was the biggest thing. When things weren t or were going right, just know how to act.... I think it s great. In baseball you have to play defense and offense, especially at the shortstop position. You need to be a good defender, get on base, anyway to help the team win. That s what I try to do day in and day out try to get on base and let the people behind me score me and pick up the ball and help my pitchers out. Anyway to help the team succeed.... Creighton helped me. Freshman year I had the strikeouts, it comes. As I matured my sophomore and junior year I got better a pitch recognition and worked the counts. I got comfortable battling with two strikes and don t be afraid that there are two strikes on you and get nervous. I think that s the biggest thing. Not being afraid with two strikes, work the count as the leadoff hitter and the walks will come....on being rated #13 prospect No I don t think it adds any pressure. I don t try to really read into that stuff. I kind of just play the game and try to help the team win and stay inside the locker room. I don t look too much into that and try to compete and help the team.... I was a big Derek Jeter fan. I used to watch the Yankees a lot and Derek Jeter play. Right now I like Brandon Crawford. I really like how he plays. He s a grinder and would do anything to help the team. It always looks like he has a dirty uniform so I kind of try to emulate that and play the game hard.... I ve never been this far east. It s a new part of America I haven t seen. I ve been and played to the west coast, been to the south but I haven t been this far east so I m just looking forward to meeting the people up here and what they have to offer.

I could hear the band playing so that s all I knew growing up so it was an opportunity for me to go there it was an easy yes.... Like everyone says growing up, it kind of clicks. Not saying I m a power hitter now but it was different to add that aspect to my game. Like I said, I m not going to go out there and try to hit home runs they just kind of happened last year. Hopefully it will continue this year....on going to Univ. of Michigan to play: Growing up I lived two miles from the stadium. I could hear the band playing so that s all I knew growing up so it was an opportunity for me to go there it was an easy yes.... It was unbelievable. The coaching staff there helped me a lot and I learned a lot about the game. Constantly building knowledge and getting to know different situations to prepare me professionally. For me it was getting healthy this offseason. I came off surgery last year so just getting a full offseason under my belt and getting my strength back I think that had a lot to do with the flaws I was having and let my swing take care of itself. There s no one specific player for me personally. I m a fan of a lot of guys in the MLB because they re can t miss TV. They said it: Luckily, I came back from a labrum surgery early in my career at Western and had some things fall my way and got lucky with that. Got a chance to play in the Cape Cod League my sophomore year. After that, my junior year went well and had a good season and started to hear my name a lot more. I always had a chip on my shoulder going to a smaller school and being a small school guy and I talked to the guys who were drafted before me in Wade Gaynor and Kes Carter were the two guys that went higher and they always played with a chip on their shoulder. I think it helped me get to that position and be blessed with that opportunity. At first in 2015 I got called up there after ten games in with Burlington and it was a little stressful. I really didn t know how to handle that situation. I went back last year and embraced it a lot more and had a lot more fun and stayed loose. I had a lot of fun with it. Last year they had an Anderson Miller bobblehead day and the first pitch of the game, I hit a home run and it was one of the top five moments of my career. It was an amazing opportunity and I know a lot of guys don t get to do that so I took it all in. It goes a long way. We spend so much time together and the closer you are off the field, the better you re going to play together, play for each other, pick each other up and play as a unit. There s not separation in the locker room and from what I see we have a really close knit group and we ve had a lot of fun so far. Even the guys who just jumped on board we got to know a lot in Spring Training. Like Foster (Griffin) said, a lot of us played together and we know how to get along with each other. I m really looking forward to it. #13 Chase Vallot [rhymes with swallow] C Ht: 6 0 Wt: 215 Age: 20 B/T: R/R Lives: Youngsville, LA LG: 0-for-5, 5 SO Homestand:.200 (2-for-10, 2B, RBI, 6SO) Notes: Drafted in the 1st Round of the 2014 June Amateur Draft by Kansas City from St. Thomas More HS (LA). They said it: I don t remember any of the pain. I don t remember the initial impact or five second after it happened. The only thing I remember is walking down the third base line into the clubhouse and everything after that. I went to the first hospital and had to go to a second hospital because the first one didn t have a dentist. The dentist had to pull my teeth back into place. My teeth were bent at a 45-degree angle so she had to pop those back in. The doctor had to stitch me up. I had 30 stitches from the top of my nose to underneath my lip....(on getting back in the box): It was a little tough because getting back in the box was a little uncomfortable at first. Luckily, I got hit in my first at-bat in the arm and I was worried about getting hit again but when I got hit, I said alright it s fine.... Last year I had the solid blue piece like the one Javier Baez wears. It kind of messed with my timing because I could see it every time I d go hit. I asked my agent if there was an alternate and he said yes there is. I said why not and got the helmet and every day I hit with it on the machine and no problem now.... From when I first played rookie ball in Burlington it s a night and day difference to the type of player I am. I have a better feel of how to play the game and how to treat yourself better. You have to play 140 games a year so you have to do whatever you have to do to get yourself ready.... I grew up a Houston Astros fan and I really loved Brad Ausmus. Now more so Yadier Molina and Salvador Perez. What they do is unbelievable and I m not quite at their level yet, but I hope to be soon.
