THE GAME: Grand Valley State will travel to Wayne State for a GLIAC doubleheader this afternoon. Game one of the doubleheader will begin at 3:00 p.m. with game two to follow approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of game one. THE COACHES: Grand Valley State head coach Doug Woods is in his 17th season and has compiled a (.696) record. Woods has tallied a record against Wayne State in his tenure as the Laker softball coach. The head coach of Wayne State, Gary Bryce, is entering his 26th season at the helm of the Warriors. SERIES RECORD: Grand Valley State and Wayne State have met 107 times prior to today s doubleheader. Wayne State holds a slim edge in the series. Last year, the teams played four times and GVSU won three out of four of the meetings. The two teams split a regular season doubleheader a season ago in Allendale. Wayne State won game one, 2-0, while GVSU picked up a 4-3 win in eight innings in game two. The two teams met again in the finals of the GLIAC Tournament. GVSU won 5-3 in eight innings to force a game two,which they also won, 4-3 to capture the GLIAC Tournament title. THE LAST GAME: GVSU swept Bellarmine in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday. The Lakers won game one, 4-1 and game two, 11-1 in five innings. UP NEXT: GVSU will travel to Hillsdale for another GLIAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 7 with game one beginning at 1:00 p.m. GVSU AT BAT: The Lakers are hitting.296 as a team and have recorded 223 hits, 61 more than their opponents. Grand Valley has posted 65 more runs and 123 more total bases than its 27 oppponents. In the Lakers six games last week, they outscored their opponents by a 42-3 margin. GVSU tallied 53 hits, while holding its opponents to just 19. THE LONG BALL: Grand Valley State has hit 18 home runs so already this season, 11 more than its opponents. The Lakers hit three home runs in its 5-0 win against Lake Superior State on Saturday. LAKERS ON THE MOUND: Grand Valley State s pitchers have a combined ERA of 1.60, while its opponents are allowing 3.11 earned runs per game. The Lakers have tallied 176 strikeouts, while they have struck out just 115 times. GVSU pitchers have also walked 17 less batters than its opponents (59-42). GVSU ON THE WEB: Selected softball games will be web broadcast this spring on the Grand Valley Sports Network (GVSN). Kent Fisher will be calling all the action for the Laker softball team. The remaining regular season dates that will be broadcast on the web are April 15 vs. Ashland, April 21 vs. Northwood, and April 22 vs. Saginaw Valley State. 5 Doug Woods is beginning his 17th year as head softball coach at Grand Valley State University. Woods has the longest tenure of any Laker softball coach and during his time he has compiled an overall record of (.695). Woods, who inherited the program in 1991, has brought the Lakers to regional and national prominence. He has led the Lakers to the NCAA Tournament in seven out of the last eight years, 40 plus wins in seven season and 35 or more wins in 11 out of the last 12 years. In addition, GVSU has posted a winning record in GLIAC action for 10 straight years. Last season, the Lakers dropped their first game in the GLIAC Tournament, 4-3 to Ashland, but came back to win six straight games to claim the GLIAC Tournament Championship. GVSU defeated Wayne State in two straight games, 5-3 (8) and 4-3 to win the title. The Lakers entered the Great Lakes Region Tournament as the #8 seed and upset #1-seed SIUE, 3-2, in eight innings. GVSU dropped its next two contests to end the season with a overall and 12-8 GLIAC record. Woods led GVSU to their second straight GLIAC Championship title and a 36-8 overall record in Grand Valley dropped a 4-0 decision to Northern Kentucky in the Great Lakes Region Championship game. His 49-6 record in 2003, marked his winningest season (.920). GVSU also captured the GLIAC regular season title with a 17-1 record and claimed the conference championship for the second time in three year. In 2002, he took the Lakers to a NCAA DII National runner-up finish. GVSU finished on the year and number two in the NFCA Top 25 poll. It was GVSU's first ever World Series after four consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament. The Lakers swept through the NCAA Regional tournament with three straight wins and then won their first two games of the World Series. After a set back to the eventual champion St. Mary's (Tex.), the Lakers won two more games, including a win over St. Mary's to advance to the championship game. Woods also led the Lakers to a second place finish in the GLIAC after a 13-5 mark in league play. Woods led the Lakers to another outstanding season in 2001 as GVSU tallied a record overall, including a 16-4 conference record. GVSU claimed the GLIAC title by winning the regular season and tournament titles and advanced to its third consecutive NCAA Regional appearance. Woods earned GLIAC Coach of the Year honors for the third consecutive year and fourth time in his career and was named the Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year for the second time. In addition to earning GLIAC Coach-of-the-Year honors in , Woods was also recognized by his peers in Woods led the Lakers to a record in 2000, winning the GLIAC regular season crown and competing in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional. GVSU was 2-2 in NCAA Regional Tournament, reaching the title game for the first time in school history. Woods led GVSU to a record-setting season in 1999 as the Lakers posted a single-season record 58 wins and qualified for the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional for the first time in school history. In addition to qualifying for NCAA Regional, GVSU was selected as the host institution of the fourteam tournament. The Lakers finished with a 1-2 Head Coach Doug Woods by the Years record in the regional, but finished the season with a record. Woods was tabbed as the Great Lakes Regional Coach-of-the-Year following the record-setting season. GVSU rewrote the offensive record books, setting 23 school and individual records. At one point during the season, the Lakers posted a single-season record 16 consecutive wins. Prior to the 1999 season, Woods had the task of juggling both coaching and athletic training in his career. Doug had been the head athletic trainer at Grand Valley since 1976, when he arrived on campus. He handled both jobs for eight years, but became the programs first, fulltime coach in `99.
