The pitching staff tallied 32 strikeouts and eight walks, holding San Francisco to a.132 batting average. UCLA has already logged two shutouts this season, one more than its 2010 total, and UCLA s most shutouts since recording five in SERIES SWEEP Freshman right-hander Adam Plutko threw six scoreless innings in his first collegiate outing Sunday, helping UCLA sweep San Francisco with a 3-0 victory. Plutko allowed just two hits as the Bruins starter before relievers Zack Weiss, Mitchell Beacom and Nick Vander Tuig combined for three scoreless innings in relief. Jeff Gelalich went 1-for-3 with an RBI-triple in the victory, finishing the weekend with a.556 batting average (5-for-9). Cody Keefer and Beau Amaral each recorded two hits for the Bruins in their third win of the season. CATCH-22 Junior right-hander Trevor Bauer tallied 10 strikeouts, surrendering just one unearned run and two hits through 7.2 innings to lead UCLA past San Francisco, 4-1, on Saturday. Bauer, a two-time All-Pac-10 selection, has recorded 267 career strikeouts in innings, posting a 22-6 career record. He ranks sixth on UCLA s all-time strikeouts list and has moved into a five-way tie for eighth place on the career wins list. Bauer is the first UCLA pitcher to have logged at least 22 wins since Casey Janssen finished with 22 during his senior season. SEASON OPENING VICTORY Junior right-hander Gerrit Cole led UCLA past San Francisco, 1-0, by pitching a complete game to earn the victory in the Bruins season opener last Friday. Cole tossed his second career complete game (first CG win), recording 11 strikeouts and just one walk through a career-high nine innings. UCLA received a 2-for-3 effort from Trevor Brown, who scored the game s only run and had one double. The Bruins won their fifth consecutive season-opening contest, improving to 6-1 on Opening Day under head coach John Savage. GOING WITH GRIGGS UCLA will start sophomore right-hander Scott Griggs against Pepperdine on Tuesday at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Griggs pitched in eight games last season, all in relief, and did not record a decision. He logged a 6.75 ERA, collecting 10 strikeouts and eight walks in 8.0 innings. Selected in the 34th round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners, Griggs was a three-year varsity letterwinner at San Ramon Valley High School. UCLA looks to fill the shoes of Garett Claypool, who served as the Bruins primary midweek starter the last four years. EYE OF THE TIGER Freshman Nick Vander Tuig earned saves in UCLA s wins against San Francisco on Saturday and Sunday. He made his collegiate debut in the ninth inning of a 4-1 ballgame Saturday, recording three outs on seven pitches. In Sunday s 3-0 shutout victory, Vander Tuig allowed one hit and registered two strikeouts in the ninth inning to collect the save. In that game, he struck out the first two batters he faced looking. HE S GELLIN Sophomore Jeff Gelalich enters Tuesday s game against Pepperdine as the only UCLA player to have hit safely in each of the team s three games this season. Gelalich has batted.556, going 5-for-9, with one triple, one double, two runs and two stolen bases. He went 3-for-3 with two runs and two stolen bases in the Bruins 4-1 win over San Francisco on Saturday. Last season, Gelalich batted.321 with two homers and 13 RBI in 40 games (24 starts). He is a perfect 9-for-9 on the basepaths in his UCLA career. STRIKEOUT DUO Juniors Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer have packed a formidable 1-2 punch in UCLA s starting rotation the past two seasons. Bauer led the nation with 165 strikeouts last year, and Cole finished third in the country with 153. Those totals rank first and second, respectively, in UCLA s single-season strikeout record list. Bauer and Cole entered the 2011 season tied for eighth place on UCLA s career strikeouts list (257). Cole added 11 strikeouts last Friday, and Bauer logged 10 strikeouts in UCLA s win on Saturday. at All-Time Series: UCLA leads, Pepperdine in 2010: 24-30, 12-9 WCC UCLA in 2010: 51-17, 18-9 Pac-10 UCLA S TOP-10 CAREER STRIKEOUTS 1. In addition, Cole has secured first-team accolades from Baseball America and Perfect Game USA. Bauer has earned second-team honors from Baseball America. Both pitchers were named All-America selections at the end of their sophomore campaigns. POWER OF THE PAC Seven Pac-10 Conference baseball programs have been ranked in at least one of the five prominent college baseball polls. UCLA leads the way in each of those five polls, earning a No. 1 preseason selection from ESPN/ USA Today Coaches Poll and the NCBWA. The Bruins are ranked No. 2 in Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball. Baseball America s poll features six Pac-10 teams, including Stanford (8), Arizona State (9), Oregon (15), California (17) and Arizona (18). Last year, a record eight Pac-10 teams advanced to NCAA Regionals. BRUIN BACKSTOPS Steve Rodriguez enters his third season as UCLA s starting catcher. He handled a staff in 2010 that led the nation with 700 strikeouts and posted a Pac-10 leading 3.00 ERA (second in the nation). A former standout at St. John Bosco High School, Rodriguez batted.249 with eight home runs and 37 RBI as a sophomore last spring. BULLPEN AT A GLANCE UCLA s bullpen includes five pitchers who have seen action on the mound in either of the last two seasons and welcomes four freshmen (including redshirt freshman Ryan Deeter). Scott Griggs (8.0 innings) and Mitchell Beacom (17.2 innings) are two of the team s more experienced bullpen arms (Griggs expected to start Tuesday against Pepperdine). Freshmen right-handers Nick Vander Tuig, Zack Weiss and Eric Jaffe should all compete for playing time on the mound, along with Deeter. RAMMING SPEED Tyler Rahmatulla started 61 of the team s first 62 games at second base last season, batting.328 with seven homers, 19 doubles, 45 RBI and 52 runs. Rahmatulla belted among the most historic home runs in school history in Game 2 of last June s NCAA Los Angeles Super Regional. As UCLA trailed 6-5 with two outs in the top of the ninth inning (designated visitor), he belted a two-run homer to save UCLA s season. CORNER OPTIONS Cody Regis, Dean Espy and Trevor Brown are expected to compete for playing time at third base, while Espy and Brown will also contribute at first base this season. Espy played in 61 games in 2010, batting.312 with nine home runs and 47 RBI. Espy tied with Regis for the team s home run lead (9) and led UCLA with 52 RBI. Brown played in 31 games, batting.300 with one homer and nine RBI. LEFT-HANDED RELIEF Mitchell Beacom is one of two left-handed pitchers on the Bruins 2011 roster.
