The previous time Chicago played a doubleheader in which both games were decided in a team s last at-bat was May 28, 2004, at Pittsburgh in that case, the Pirates won both games in walk-off fashion thanks to STATS, Inc. Yesterday s nightcap featured 6.0 innings of one-run ball by Mike Montgomery he is the first pitcher since at least 1908 to go at least 5.0 innings and allow one or fewer runs in each of his first five season starts with the Cubs. RISPY BUSINESS: Cubs pitching limited the Dodgers to four hits in 29 at-bats (.138) with runners in scoring position during yesterday s twin bill while Cubs hitters were held to three hits in 17 at-bats (.176) with RISP. Cubs pitchers have held opponents to a.222 average (113-for-508) with RISP, the fourth-lowest mark among major league clubs (Washington leads,.193) Chicago s hitters lead the majors with 787 plate appearances with RISP while it s.234 average (150-for-642) ranks 13th in the N.L. CURRENT EVENTS: In their last 22 games since May 27, the Cubs are 14-1 when scoring at least two runs in a game the team has been held to one or no runs in six of seven losses in that stretch. Chicago is 16-8 in its last 24 games since May 25, tied with the Dodgers (16-7) for most wins in the N.L. in that span including this past weekend in St. Louis, the Cubs have won six of their last seven series and are in series of two or more games this season, including a at home. The Cubs on Saturday night earned win No. 40 this season last year, the Cubs did not reach 40 wins until June 29 en route to 43 wins at the All-Star Break. Following today s game, the team heads right back out for an eight-day, eightgame road trip through Cincinnati (four games) and Los Angeles (four games starting Monday). ON THE RECORD: The Cubs own a.586 winning percentage, third-best in the N.L. behind only Atlanta (.597) and Milwaukee (.589) Chicago s 29 setbacks are tied for the fewest in the Senior Circuit with the Braves. The Cubs, with a record at home and a record on the road, join Milwaukee and Atlanta as the only N.L. clubs with at least 20 victories at home and on the road this season.
