MOOSE STILL STREAKING--Mike Moustakas has collected one hit in each of the first three games of this series, but it s been enough to extend his hitting streak to 13, which included a third-inning single yesterday...his run is the second-longest active streak in the Majors, behind Minnesota s Brian Dozier, who hit in his 15th-straight game yesterday in St. Pete...during his streak, Moose has hit.386 (22-for-57) with four doubles, five homers, 12 RBI and a.719 slugging percentage...he entered play on April 8 with a.174 season average, but this streak has raised his mark to.325, which is tied for 10th in the American League. STARTERS OFF TO SOLID BEGINNING--Kansas City s starting staff has been one of the bright spots through the first three weeks of competition and despite Danny Duffy s abbreviated outing yesterday, the starters enter today with a 3.75 ERA, good for sixth in the AL...the Royals starting staff has held the opposition to three runs or less in 12 of their first 19 contests...conversely, Kansas City s 8.41 ERA out of the bullpen currently ranks 30th in the Majors. ALL-STARS IN OMAHA--Fans in Omaha have been treated to two Royals All-Stars in their lineup this weekend as both Salvador Perez (left knee sprain) and Alex Gordon (left hip labral tear) have been on rehab assignments with the Storm Chasers...in action last night, Perez caught seven innings and went 3-for-4 with a double and a solo homer, while Gordon was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI in Omaha s 6-2 victory over Nashville. HOMESTAND AHEAD--Following today s series finale, the Royals will return to Kansas City for a week-long stay at Kauffman Stadium...the club will play its first Interleague games of 2018, with the Milwaukee Brewers visiting Tuesday and Wednesday evening...kc will play an additional 18 contests against its brethren from the National League Central, including a trip to Miller Park, June the Royal complete the homestand with an expanded five-game series vs. the Chicago White Sox, next Thursday through Sunday...the clubs will play a day-night doubleheader next Saturday, making up the postponement on Easter Sunday. RISP STILL A PROBLEM--Kansas City went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position yesterday, with the only hit a two-out RBI single by Drew Butera in the second inning...the Royals have gone 4-for-29 (.138) with RISP in the first three games of this series, with no extra-base hits...kc enters the day 27th in the Majors, batting.193 (29-for-150) in scoring situations this season, including a.147 mark (11-for-75) on the road. LOSS IN TORONTO--Eric took his second loss in as many starts this season in the Royals 11-3 defeat on Wednesday in Toronto, the first game of a traditional doubleheader he allowed five runs on eight hits (one home run) and one walk in 5.0 innings, with a career-high six strikeouts he fell behind on a two-run home run in the first inning, but stranded one baserunner in the second, third and fourth, before retiring just two of seven batters in the Blue Jays three-run fifth he exited trailing 5-3, before the bullpen surrendered a six-spot in the sixth he s winless in his last eight appearances (six starts) since blanking these Tigers, 1-0, in his Major League debut at Kauffman Stadium on May 30, DYNAMITE DEBUT IN 17--Eric debuted on May 30 of last season, earning a 1-0 victory over Detroit with 6.1 scoreless innings to top two-time AL Cy Young Award winner, Justin Verlander Skoglund allowed just two hits and a walk and recorded five strikeouts, becoming the 10th Royal to start and win his big league debut his 6.1 scoreless innings marked the third-longest outing without a run by a Royal in his first start, trailing only Rich Gale (1978) and Derek Botelho (1982), who both had 7.0 shutout innings in their debuts according to Elias Sports Bureau, Skoglund became the third starting pitcher in Major League history to win 1-0 over a former Cy Young Award winner in his Major League debut, joining Steve Woodward (July 28, 1997 over Roger Clemens) and Lee Tunnell (September 4, 1982 over Fernando Valenzuela). LACKING SUPPORT--The Royals offense has scored just six runs of support in Skoglund s 23.2 innings over his first seven career starts, including no runs in four of those outings his 2.28 run support average (in his starts) is lowest in the Majors since the beginning of 2017 (min. seven starts) SOLID SPRING--Prior to his regular season debut on April 10 vs. Seattle, Skoglund went 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA (4 ER in 10.2 IP) in four Cactus League outings, with 11 strikeouts and no walks the win came in his final spring appearance on March 17, a 7-6 win over Texas, in which he allowed three first-inning runs and recorded a spring-best six strikeouts in 4.0 innings. OMAHA WORK LAST YEAR--Eric spent a majority of 2017 at Omaha (AAA), where he went 4-5 with a 4.11 ERA (46 ER in IP) in 19 starts despite a couple of stints in the Major Leagues, his 102 strikeouts with the Storm Chasers were tied for ninth in the Pacific Coast League he had a season-high nine strikeouts in three starts at Omaha, including his last two starts on Aug. 10 at Memphis (7.0 IP) and Aug. 15 vs. Oklahoma City (5.2 IP). ON THE ROAD--Skoglund is 0-2 with a ERA (17 ER in 10.2 IP) in four career appearances (three starts) away from home he combined to allow nine runs in 2.2 innings over his first two road starts, before allowing three runs in 3.0 relief innings in Minnesota last Sept. 2 in his only road start this season, he surrendered five runs on eight hits (one home run) and on walk in 5.0 innings in an 11-3 loss in Toronto on Tuesday. ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END--Rookie left-hander Tim Hill saw his hitless streak go by the boards yesterday as Leonys Martin collected a bunt single in the fifth inning off the side-armer, which is the first hit his allowed in his eight Major League appearances...according to Elias Sports Bureau, Hill s run was one appearance shy of tying the Major Leage record for most hitless appearances to begin a career, held by Garry Rogenburk (1963) and former Royal Jonathan Sanchez (2006), who both went their first eight outings without allowing a hit...the lefty has allowed three walks and a hit batsman in his eight outings this year (6.2 IP), including a pair of walks before departing yesterday. WELCOME, ABE!--Journeyman outfielder Abraham Almonte has settled into his new role with the Royals the last two days...the 28-year-old switch hitter drove in the tying run in the ninth innng on Friday evening, with a pinch-hit RBI single, while he followed that up with three hits and two runs scored yesterday...he s gone 5-for-10 in this series, after opening the year 2-for-his-first-20...yesterday marked Almonte s first three-hit contest since July 21 of last year, when he was 3-for-5 in a win over Toronto as a member of the Cleveland Indians...Almonte has spent time with three other clubs since 2013, but was claimed off waivers by the Royals on April 2 this year and recalled when Alex Gordon was placed on the disabled list eight days later. WHIT MERRI-ALL-OVER-THE-FIELD--Through the first 19 games of the season, Whit Merrifield has displayed the versatility that got him into the big leagues two seasons ago...he s started games at four different defensive positions this season, at first base (1), second base (13), center field (1) and right field (3), while he s also served as the Royals designated hitter once...he s played exceptional defense, wherever he s played on the field, committing just one error in 73 total chances for a.986 fielding percentage overall.
