Royals vs. Tigers Kansas City dropped the first of 19 meetings with the Tigers in last night s series opener...the Royals were 12-7 vs. Detroit last year, going 6-4 here and 6-3 in Comerica Park...KC possesses a slim advantage in the all-time seres, including a mark in Kansas City, in Kauffman Stadium. Date Site Score WP LP Att. 5/29 KC L, 7-10 Rodriguez Soria 28,419 5/30 KC 5/31 KC Det Det Det ONE THAT GOT AWAY--The Royals held a couple of leads in last night s Memorial Day homestand opener, but a 4-run eighth inning by the Tigers handed Kansas City a 10-7 loss in the first meeting of the year between these A.L. Central foes...kc jumped out to a 3-0 lead after four innings with Whit Merrifield the catalyst homering and tripling in consecutive at bats to knock in two of the club s first three runs...unfortunately, starter Jason Hammel, who tossed 4.0 scoreless, was solved for four runs in the fifth, three scoring after his departure, with the base on balls causing issues with three freebies in the inning, all eventually scoring...despite the 6-run fifth, Kansas City regained the lead in the seventh when Eric Hosmer clubbed a opposite field homer down the line in left for his fifth of the year and a 7-6 advantage, but Joakim Soria was tagged for four runs in the eighth, incurring a blown save and his second loss of the year...merrifield ended up a single shy of the cycle, flying out to right in his final at bat. MORE MOVES TODAY--A day after Kansas City swapped pitchers with Kevin McCarthy s arrival for Miguel Almonte, the Royals today placed left-handed starter Danny Duffy on the 10-day disabled list (retroactive to May 29) with a right oblique strain and selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Eric Skoglund, who will make his Major League debut tonight...duffy suffered the injury during his start on Sunday in Cleveland and is likely to be sidelined for 6-8 weeks...the selection of Skoglund s contract has maxed out the Royals overall Major League roster at 40. ANOTHER CENTRAL SETBACK--The Royals fell to 6-16 within the Central Division with last night s loss to the Tigers...the start to intra-divisional play in 2017 is a far cry from Kansas City s success last year when the club went within the Central...this year, the Royals lost their first eight A.L. Central matchups, but have since gone 6-8 in May with a pair to play this month...a quirk in the schedule has the Royals and Tigers facing each other for the first time this year, which is the latest into 2017 that any divisional opponents are playing each other for the first time according to the Elias Sports Bureau...every other divisional matchup in the Majors had completed at least one series prior to this one with the Tigers. A SINGLE SHY OF THE CYCLE--Whit Merrifield last night came within just a single of becoming the seventh Royal to hit for the cycle and first since George Brett in Merrifield, who extended his career-best and team-high hitting streak to 14 games, was working backwards on the potential cycle, homering in the third, tripling in the fourth and doubling in the sixth, before flying out to right in what wound up his final at bat in the seventh...during this 14-game roll, Whit is batting.400 (20-for-50) with two double, a triple, three homers, six RBI, nine runs and three walks for a.434 on-base percentage and.660 slugging percentage. 10-GAME STAY IS UNDERWAY--Last night opened a 3-game series with Detroit, concluding tomorrow night before KC enjoys a day away on Thursday...after the vacation day, the homestand resumes when Cleveland pays its second visit of the year to Kauffman Stadium with a 3-game set starting Friday night...this extended stay will conclude when the A.L. West-leading Houston Astros hit town for four starting next Monday...overall, the Royals are in The K this year, coming off of a 2016 season in which KC was at home. ACE 30 REMEMBERING YO--The morning of January 22, 2017 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in franchise history when word was received that pitcher Yordano Ventura had his life cut short due to a car accident in his native Dominican Republic...signed as a 17-year old in 2008, the fireballing right-hander compiled a during his abbreviated Major League career...among many highlights, Ace will be most remembered for blanking the San Francisco Giants over 7.0 innings in Game #6 of the 2014 World Series to force a seventh and deciding game, while pitching with a heavy heart himself due to the untimely passing of his friend Oscar Tavares...to honor the late Ventura, all uniforms in 2017 will be adorned with the ACE 30 patch.
