World Series winners, with the most recent titleholder taking the opener...the Royals and Stros will play a pair of matinees today and tomorrow, then KC will travel to Minute Maid Park for three next weekend...kansas City trails the all-time regular season work by a margin, including a deficit in The K. Date Site Score WP LP Att. 6/15 KC L, 3-7 Morton Junis 27,603 6/16 KC 6/17 KC Hou Hou Hou NOT SO GRAND--For the second straight game the Royals were on the wrong end of a grand slam, the one last night by Evan Gattis turned a 3-2 KC lead into an eventual 7-3 defeat...jakob Junis in falling for the fourth straight start, allowed six runs in 5.1 innings, with all tallies the direct result of three Houston homers, upping his season total 18 roundtrippers allowed in 14 starts...the Royals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third when Mike Moustakas delivered a two-out, two-run double into the corner in right, but the Stros tied it the next inning on solo shots from Alex Bregman and Carlos Correa, the first two hits allowed by Junis on the night...kc took a 3-2 lead when Moustakas was walked with the bases loaded in the fifth, but again Houston came back the next inning, this time plating four runs on the Gattis slam...the defeat was Kansas City s fourth in a row and 10th in the last 11 games. BATS STILL SCUFFLING--The Royals put three runs on the board in last night s setback, the most tallies scored since a June 6, 4-3 defeat in Anaheim...since the calendar flipped into June, KC has scored only 26 runs in 13 games for a 2.0 per contest average, while hitting.183 as a unit (76-for-415)...hitting with runners in scoring position has been the biggest culprit, with Mike Moustakas two-run double in the third inning last night, just the second hit in RISP situations in the last 30 tries (.067) spanning the last seven games in which the club has gone the Royals are batting.151 (11-for-73) with runners in scoring position during June...for the season, the club s.210 average in scoring situations is 29th out of 30 teams, ahead of only the Rangers.208 mark. GORDO AT IT AGAIN--Five-time Rawlings Gold Glove winner and Platinum Glove winner, Alex Gordon, continues to get tested by baserunners and he continues to pass the test...last night it was Tony Kemp attempting to go to second on a deep fly to left, but Gordo nabbed him for the second assist in as many games and sixth on the season...for Gordon, it was his 88th career outfield assist, keeping pace with Gerardo Parra for the most in the Majors since 2010, when Alex made the move from infielder to outfielder...gordo also has a Major League best 86 outfield dimes since the start of the 2011 campaign, which was his first full year in left. TEXAS TEAMS CLOSEOUT STAY--The Royals are 0-3 to start out this eight-game homestand, dropping both games vs. Cincinnati and last night s series opener with the Astros...the stay is now down to five games with both Texas entries visiting Kauffman Stadium over the remaining days...last night started a weekend set with the last two World Series champs from the A.L., then the Rangers will be here from Monday thru Wednesday. DAD S DAY TOMORROW--During tomorrow s Father s Day games, players and on-field personnel will wear the symbolic blue ribbon on their uniforms along with blue wristbands...also, for the third consecutive year, players will wear specially-designed caps to raise awareness and funds for the fight against prostate cancer...mlb will again donate all royalty payments from the sales of specialty caps and apparel to the Prostate Cancer Foundation and Stand Up To Cancer...commemorative base jewels and dugout lineup cards also will be blue...players and all on-field personnel have worn blue ribbons and sported blue wristbands on Father s Day since MLB first partnered with the Prostate Cancer Foundation in this effort also includes the annual Prostate Cancer Foundation Home Run Challenge, which has given fans the chance to make a one-time monetary donation or pledge for every home run hit by their favorite MLB Clubs from June 1st through Father s Day, all the while tracking where their team stacks up in a Team vs. Team competition...every dollar donated through the Home Run Challenge goes to PCF to fund critical research to defeat prostate cancer...as of June 15th, more than $1.85 million has been pledged via the Home Run Challenge in 2018 and since inception, the Home Run Challenge has raised nearly $50 million for PCF, the world s leading philanthropic organization funding and accelerating prostate cancer research. STRAIGHT A S--Danny tossed 7.0 scoreless innings last Saturday afternoon at the Oakland Coliseum, earning his second-straight victory, 2-0 over the A s...he allowed just three hits and three walks, while recording a season-high 10 strikeouts, matching Jason Hammel (May 27 at Texas) for the most by a Royal this season...duffy faced two-on, one-out jams in both the second and seventh innings, but pitched out of each... he completed the seventh by fanning Chad Pinder and Josh Phegley to protect his 1-0 lead...it was Danny s longest outing without allowing a run since May 18, 2017, when he blanked the Yankees for 7.0 innings, which was also the last time he collected as many as 10 K s...after not recording a strikeout in his previous outing (June 4) at Angel Stadium, he became the second Royal to fan 10 or more after no strikeouts in his previous start, joining Kevin Appier (July 5 and 11, 1993). BIG TIME IMPROVEMENT--Duffy is in his best stretch of the season over his last four starts, going 2-0 with a 2.10 ERA (6 ER in 25.2 IP), while holding the opposition to a.202 average (18-for-89)...this run includes three quality starts and his two longest outings of 2018, May 24 at Texas (7.2 IP) and 7.0 frames last Saturday...he was 1-3 with a 9.31 ERA (20 ER in 19.1 IP) in four previous starts, with opponents batting.356 (31-for-87). VS. LEFTIES--Despite overall better numbers, Danny has hit a rough spot vs. left-handed hitters in his last four outings as they ve gone 6-for-20 against him (.300) in that span...they re batting just.236 for the season (13-for-55), with three extra-base hits (.327 slugging pct.)...since returning from an oblique injury last July 4, he has held lefty batters to a.164 average (18-for-110), tied for sixth best in the Majors (min. 110 lefties faced) since the start of 2012, he s allowed only four home runs to left-handed batters in 594 plate appearances, second fewest in the Majors (min. 500 lefties faced), behind Trevor Rosenthal (3). VS. HOUSTON--Duffy is 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA (14 ER in 28.0 IP) in four starts (seven outings) against the Stros...that includes a 7-3 victory at Minute Maid Park on April 8 last year, when he allowed two runs on eight hits over 7.0 innings...he has a 2.93 ERA (5 ER in 15.1 IP) in his last four outings (two starts) against Houston, dating back to a no-decision here on July 25, Danny is 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA (6 ER in 25.0 IP) in four starts vs. AL West foes this season. BACK AT HOME--Danny is making his sixth home start of the year, entering at 0-2 with a 5.68 ERA (16 ER in 25.1 IP)...he s looking for his first victory at The K since last August 22, a 3-2 triumph over Colorado...from the start of 2016 to the end of last season, Duff was 11-5 with a 3.54 ERA (65 ER in IP) here...he s with a 3.93 ERA in 69 starts and 80 appearances all-time at Kauffman Stadium.
