1 season review The Laura Watten era of Maryland has been marked by continual progress and improvement, and the Terrapins' 2008 season proved no exception. During their third year under the guidance of coach Watten and her staff, the Terps soared to new heights, claiming the third-highest victory total in program history and achieving a school-record win streak in the process. Signs of a successful 2008 campaign emerged in the season's very first game, as Maryland upset 12th-ranked Michigan in extra innings for their first-ever win over the Wolverines. Sparked by that season-opening performance, the Terps soon reeled off a school-record 16 consecutive victorious en route to their best start in the program's 14-year history at With unprecedented success came national attention for the Maryland program. The Terps earned rankings in both the ESPN. com/usa Softball Collegiate Top 25 and the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 for the first time since 1999, and they reached as high as No. 23 in both polls. Although the Terrapins ultimately experienced growing pains during the ultra-competitive Atlantic Coast Conference portion of their schedule, they finished the year with a respectable record (36-23, 7-14 ACC), and they provided many indications suggesting the squad is destined to capture an NCAA Regional bid sooner rather than later. The Terps went undefeated in three early-season tournaments during 2008 and recorded at least one victory over six teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Maryland was particuarly dominant in contests played at its own Taylor Stadium, winning more than 75 percent of its home games. Finishing the season ranked second in the ACC in batting (.268), the Terps proved their offensive outburst a year ago was no fluke. The 2008 squad set a single-season team record for Brittany Bessho jenny Belak meredith Nelles triples (17) and scored at least six runs on 15 different occasions, winning all but one of those games. A trio of seniors - Jenny Belak, Brittany Bessho and Sarde Stewart - led the way offensively for the Terps in Belak and Stewart garnered All-ACC honors, while Bessho was named to the All-ACC Tournament squad. A four-year starter in Maryland's outfield, Belak set team career records for hits (219), stolen bases (60) and triples (12) during the 2008 season. She capped a stellar tenure in College Park by batting.327 with a team-high 67 hits and 39 runs. Bessho demonstrated tremendous improvement during her final season at Maryland, ranking among the ACC's top-10 in batting (.327), doubles (14) and total bases (95) in Her productive season enabled her to claim the top career batting average in team history (.315). Stewart picked up where her sister, former Maryland standout Amber Jackson, left off with her impressive offensive output in She batted.338 while leading the ACC in RBIs (49) and posting the third-highest home run total (10) in team history. Veteran pitcher Meredith Nelles and newcomer Sarah Dooley anchored the Terps' rotation in Despite having her season cut short by injury, Nelles posted a 10-3 record and a team-leading 2.18 ERA to finish her career fifth on Maryland's all-time list with 38 wins. Dooley, a transfer, developed into a workhorse on the mound, leading the team in wins (16) and strikeouts (179), while logging the fourth-most innings in a single season in team history. Thanks to an exciting offense led by its trio of senior leaders and steady pitching by the likes of Nelles and Dooley, Maryland enjoyed a successful 36-win campaign in 2008, continuing to make strides in Watten's third season.
