1 Mississippi Braves (10-9, 43-44) vs Jacksonville Suns (9-10, 38-50) LHP Andrew Barbosa (1-1, 4.22) vs RHP Austin Brice (3-6, 5.00) Overall (43-44) 1st Half (33-35) 2nd Half (10-9) Game #88 July 16, 2015 Pearl, MS Trustmark Park TODAY S GAME: The M-Braves try to snap a two-game skid on Thursday night, taking on the Jacksonville Suns in the second of five games at Trustmark Park. Left-hander Andrew Barbosa makes his home debut for the Braves against right-hander Austin Brice. LAST TIME OUT: Jacksonville pulled away with four runs in the third against starter Jorge Reyes on the way to a 7-2 win over the M-Braves. Reyes took the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits over five frames. Kenny Wilson finished with a double, a two-run homer and three RBI to help the Suns win their third straight against the Braves. Mississippi was stifled by Suns right-hander Trevor Williams, allowing just a run on six hits over six innings for his sixth win of the year. Levi Hyams knocked three hits, while Matt Lipka, KD Kang and Kevin Ahrens got a pair of knocks each. Brandon Cunniff pitched a scoreless 2/3rds inning in an MLB rehab outing. THE STREAK CAME TO AN END-ONI: Emerson Landoni had his consecutive-hit streak end at ten, striking out looking in the first inning on Wednesday against Trevor Williams. He built the streak with back-to-back 5-for-5 games on Sunday and Monday, clubbing four doubles, a triple, four runs scored and four RBI. His 10-straight hits brought Landoni a hit shy of the Southern League and Mississippi Braves record for most consecutive hits (11), set by Matt Young on the M-Braves championship team in UNDER THREE HOURS: Sunday s 3:04 game time was just the 17th M-Braves game in 2015 to last more than three hours. Through this many games last year, the M-Braves had already played 31 contests of three-plus hours, playing 44 total by the end of the campaign. The average game time in the Southern League is down 12 minutes from 2:52 in 2014 to 2:40 in 2015, while game times in AAA and AA (leagues with pitch clocks) are down 11 minutes on average. SECOND HALF TEAM: The M-Braves have consistently been a second-half team through their 11-year history, posting a (.478 win percentage) mark in the first half, compared to a (.499 win percentage) in the second half. The Braves have finished with a better second-half record than first-half record for seven consecutive seasons, dating back to POWER SURGE: 11 days into the month of July, the M-Braves have already hit more home runs (7) than any other month so far in Kevin Ahrens and Levi Hyams each went yard Friday night to continue the barrage, the team s third multi-hr game of the year. The surge comes after the M-Braves managed just two home runs from May 18 to June 30, a span of 37 games over which they were WINNINGEST MANAGER: Manager Aaron Holbert needs just 5 wins to become the M-Braves all-time winningest manager. Phillip Wellman currently sits at the top with a record of compiled over four seasons. Holbert enters today s game with a record of over three-plus seasons. SLUGGING INTO THE HISTORY BOOKS?: The M-Braves have one of the lowest slugging percentages in Southern League and recent Minor League Baseball history. The current mark of.321 is on pace for the lowest SLG since the 1976 Columbus Astros slugged.302. Only four Southern League teams have slugged lower than the Braves current mark over a full season: 73 Birmingham A s (.306), 70 Mobile White Sox (.292), 67 Knoxville Smokies (.304) and the 76 Columbus club.
