The Cubs finished 19-9 in September to match their 19-9 record in August the Cubs won 19 or more games in consecutive calendar months for the first time since 1977 when the Cubs won 21 games in May and 19 games in June. After today s series finale in Cincinnati (2-0), the Cubs move on to Milwaukee to start a three-game series tomorrow, the final stop of their two-city, six-game road trip to close out the regular season. A SEPTEMBER TO REMEMBER: With their 19-9 mark in September, the Cubs completed the month with the best record in the majors the Cubs won 19 games in September for the first time since 2003 (19-8) and for only the second time in the last 70 seasons starting in 1946 the Cubs had the best record in the N.L. in September for the first time since 2003 and had the best record in the majors in September for the first time since 1945 (22-10,.688). Arrieta s 0.45 ERA last month is the lowest by any pitcher within the month of September since Minnesota s Johan Santana turned in an identical 0.45 ERA (2 ER/40.0 IP) in 2004 the last N.L. pitcher to post an ERA of 0.45 or lower in September was Greg Maddux in 1995 with a 0.29 ERA (1 ER/31.0 IP) both Santana and Maddux went on to win their league s Cy Young Award. Starlin Castro led the majors with a.426 batting average (29-for-68) in September, while Kris Bryant tied for third in the N.L. with 36 hits last month. Bryant s 36 hits are the most by a Cubs rookie in September since Shawon Dunston had 37 in 1985, while Bryant s 19 RBI last month are second most for a Cubs rookie in September in franchise history (Ray Grimes, 22 RBI, 1921). THIS IS ON THE RECORD: With 93 victories, the Cubs have reached 90 wins in a season for the 23rd time in franchise history, and for the first time since going in 2008 at (.589), the Cubs have the third-best record in the majors in the last 75 years, the Cubs have finished with a better winning percentage three times (1945: 98-56,.636; 2008: 97-64,.602; 1984: 96-65,.596). The Cubs have gone in their last 61 games starting July 27, the day after enduring a three-game sweep to the Phillies at Wrigley Field Chicago s 42 wins are tied with Toronto for most in the majors in this span.
